I am running Hijack beta 11, and having difficulty with Emphatic. Here are my questions...

1. Will it work with hijack beta 11?
2. I edited the .bat file and changed the ip to the correct ip address for my player. I then added the [output] notify=1 to the config.ini file. I then double clicked the .bat file and this is what I got: Does this look correct?

Installing emphatic...

C:\Documents and Settings\djdrock\Desktop\emphatic-1.10>ftp -s:install-emphatic.

ftp> put emphatic
200 Okay.
150 Opening data connection.
226 Okay.
ftp: 348756 bytes sent in 1.21Seconds 287.99Kbytes/sec.
ftp> quote site chmod 755 emphatic

ftp> quote site ro
200 Okay.
ftp> quit
221 Happy Fishing.

C:\Documents and Settings\djdrock\Desktop\emphatic-1.10>pause
Press any key to continue . . .

3. I rebooted my player, accessed the hijack menu by holding down the volume button, but there is no menu for Emhpatic. Any ideas?

4. There is no [Startup] section ReserveCache=48 in my config.ini. Do I need to manually add it? Here is a copy of my config.ini.

firts off you will need to create or make a /usr/local/bin folder as the player dosnt have this on there by defualt. I assume this is just how tony (ynot) has his player setup.

The easier solution woudl be to ftp in and make it.

also you im not too sure about beta 11 but you shouldnt have to add the [Startup] section ReserveCache=48

You will need to have the latest hijack version installed, then read the readme that comes with the program about adding a new line to your config.ini file to have hijack start the program.

Will it work with hijack beta 11?
That is a non sequitur. Perhaps you mean... Empeg software version beta 11, with hijack?

If you are running beta 11 empeg software, please upgrade to beta 13 as it fixes some egregious bugs in beta 11. Then upgrade to the latest Hijack. You need both in place before using Emphatic.

You are correct...hijack 11??? I now have software beta 13 installed and upgraded to hijack 320.

I used my ftp program to make the directory usr/local/bin, and then installed emphatic there. I verified this after the install in the ftp program, and the emphatic file (340KB) is there. I added the ;@EXEC_ONCE /usr/local/bin/emphatic line to my config.ini file. The [output] notify=1 is also there. I synchronized the player. Here is my config.ini file now:

When I enter hijack, there still is no emphatic menu?

Still, any ideas?

Thanks!!!

The EXEC command must be in the [hijack] section, not at the end of the file like you have it. If there is no [hijack] section, make one.

Run the install script again now that /usr/local/bin is there. The install script has a command which will make the emphatic binary executable. The command is:

chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/emphatic

I'm not sure this is the problem, but since the script failed first, and now you've moved the binary manually, I'm thinking it's not an executable file. The above command will make it so.

If this is not the problem, then please post a log of what shows up when you boot your player. That should give me an idea of what's going wrong.

Edit: Bart is right. Try his suggestion first.

The text that is in my current "install-emphatic.ftp" is:
quote site rw
cd /usr/local/bin
bin
put emphatic
quote site chmod 755 emphatic
quote site ro
quit

Does this look correct?

I re-ran the .bat file...it is installing, but it still will not come up in hijack.

Is it the emplode.log file you want to take a look at?

Thanks again!!!

If it's still not coming up in hijack then please connect the serial cable to your computer, connect to it with hyperterminal, and post the log of messages that come up when you boot up your empeg. The FAQ should have details on how to do this.

Okay you followed tfabris' suggestion and moved this line:

;@EXEC_ONCE /usr/local/bin/emphatic

to the [hijack] section of your config.ini, right? Can you post your config.ini?

I did move the file to the hijack area of the config.ini, but I had to create it. I based it on a post I had seen. I was able to, just once, see the emphatic menu in hijack. When I pressed it, it did nothing, and I had to resyncronize. It has not shown up since. Here is my config.ini:

There's no sign of Hijack attempting to run emphatic with a hijack_exec command in the serial log you posted, and there's no output from emphatic telling me what's going on.

You've stumped me.

I just tried to reinstall it again...here is what I got:

C:\Documents and Settings\djdrock\Desktop\emphatic-1.10>ftp -s:install-emphatic.
ftp 192.168.1.2
Connected to 192.168.1.2.

ftp> put emphatic

550 Failed.
ftp> quote site chmod 755 emphatic
200 Okay.
ftp> quote site ro
200 Okay.
ftp> quit
221 Happy Fishing.

C:\Documents and Settings\djdrock\Desktop\emphatic-1.10>pause
Press any key to continue . . .

Notice, it does say "failed" in the text above. Could it have something to do with the command you posted earlier (chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/emphatic) and that the text that is in my current "install-emphatic.ftp" is:
quote site rw
cd /usr/local/bin
bin
put emphatic
quote site chmod 755 emphatic
quote site ro
quit

Is the only file that should be in the usr/local/bin area "emphatic"?

Thanks again!

No, what the script is doing is correct. The "failed" happens when it's trying to put the emphatic binary... Which makes me think that, when you ran the script, the emphatic binary is in use (running.) Either that, or your disk is full... Is there anything interesting on the serial console when you try running the batch file? And can you make sure that your serial log on bootup still looks the same as it did before?

when you say "Is there anything interesting on the serial console when you try running the batch file", what do you mean? Is the serial log the info from hyperterminal?

No, I mean leave hyperterminal connected and try the install program. You should see stuff happening in the hyperterminal window, probably some Hijack messages like "remounting drive / read-write" or similar.

This is my last try tonight... I'm almost out of ideas.

Here is what hyperterminal said:

hijack: Remounting read-write: /
EXT2-fs warning: checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended
hijack: Remounting read-write: /drive0
hijack: Remounting read-only: /
hijack: Remounting read-only: /drive0

Okay that doesn't help me. I was expecting error messages from the Hijack ftpd when you see "failed" in the FTP window. Hopefully someone else looking at this (probably someone who isn't as tired as I am tonight) will have better ideas.

I saw on this post http://empeg.comms.net/php/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=hackers_prog&Number=143626&page=&view=&sb=&o=

that you mention making sure emphatic is executalble by this command:
chmod +x /usr/local/bin/emphatic

Should I try this, and if so, what is the best way?

And, is it normal for me to not have a hijack section in my .ini? I had to make one.

Thanks again!

The chmod 755 is doing the same thing as chmod +x. Can you do the following from the shell prompt, after quitting out of the player app from Hyperterminal:

ls -l /usr/local/bin/emphatic

Shell prompt? Do you mean from a command prompt? And if so, could you tell me specifically what to do. I am sure you can tell by now, that I have no programming skills. :-)

Well, don't let the terminology confuse you, just do what I asked. In the hyperterminal window, quit out of the player app by typing "q" then enter. You should be at a shell prompt which is the Linux equivalent of the command prompt. Then just type:

ls -l /usr/local/bin/emphatic

And you should see a directory listing which I was hoping would give me more info on what's happening here.

But I'm more confused by the fact that Hijack isn't complaining about the file not being there, so really, I'm just grasping at straws here.

I am so sorry to be a pain, but when I type q in hyperterminal, nothing comes up. Any ideas??

Allright well then I am sorry to say that I'm 100% out of ideas for now.

In the future, I am hoping there will be a more automatic installation process for user applications, but until then, this manual, pain-in-the-ass process is what we've got, and, sadly, it's sometimes beyond the capabilities of those without Linux experience.

That is normal. There is no "heartbeat" over the cable so it doesn't really know if it is connected or not. Try pressing Control and the 'C' key. That should also quit the player. And then do the ls command Tony explained.

Hit Control^C instead then, nearly equivalent (and what I personally always use). That is, hold down the Ctrl key, and press/release the C key, then release the Ctrl key.

That was one of the mistakes made when installing this. Then I installed the developer image and forgot to reinstall hijack.

His boot log says he does...

I see this is a developer image!

So unless there is a bug with the player software identifying it that shouldn't be the problem. Perhaps the root partition is full and emphatic won't fit. If you can get to the shell you can use this command to check...

df -k /

or you can probably get your ftp client to tell you how much space is available (not sure how off the top of my head).

Well, good news. After many hours of trying to get it going, it is working. I think the magic potion was a combination of taking a couple of hours off to clear my head, and, reinstalling beta 13 developer and hijack. It is working fine. Man, this thing is great. Excellent job!!! Now, one with the editing of all of my songs. If I can do 10 a day, it will take me about, well, lets say I may never see em' all tagged.

Thanks for everybodys help!!!

Glad it's working for you now. Incidentally there are efforts underway to make tagging easier. And the LRC database should be up soon, which should help us all out.

Just a quick question regarding emphatic...Is it possible, or will it be possible, for the lyrics to stay in the "background" when you adjust the volume? To better clarify, when I adjust the volume of a song, emphatic does not stay on the display. I have to push in the volume knob, and it comes back up.

emphatic has to disappear for you to see anything coming from the player application. This has to do with the way Hijack allows user apps to use the display. Nothing I can do about it, sorry. The only other option is to go back to the way it used to work, where you couldn't see the volume bar at all. emphatic also hides itself when you go into the player's menu via the front panel bottom button, and that's also the only way I can show the player's menu. emphatic can't really tell what's going on with the player's menus, it just knows that you pushed a button.

Thanks for the info. Maybe, the next version of hijack will allow this. Also, do you know of a way to edit an lrc file once it is embedded into the mp3. Say for instance the lyrics are incorrect, is there a quick way to edit this?

Nope. Right now you gotta edit the LRC and re-tag the MP3.

I feel like we are instant messaging. Will it be possible in future releases of emphatic for it to remember the settings...ie (font, scroll etc...)?

Thanks again!!!

I feel like we are instant messaging.

We almost are. The BBS sends me an email when anyone replies to one of my posts, and since I'm at work, answering emphatic-related questions is more entertaining than answering work-related questions. So there ya go.

emphatic doesn't have anywhere to "remember" the setttings, but if you will take a look at the README file under "command line arguments" you can have it start up with the same settings each time. You would add those command line arguments to the EXEC_ONCE line in your config.ini

For instance, if you wanted to start in vertical mode with the medium font, your EXEC_ONCE line would look something like this:

;@EXEC_ONCE /usr/local/bin/emphatic -m 2 -f 1

-m 2 means "mode 2" which is vertical. -f 1 means "font 1" which is the medium font. You can also specify what row the horizontal scroller scrolls on, and some other less-important things.

But right now, there's no way for ANY user application to "remember" things.

Although hijack is working, it still is not coming on at startup, and adding the last line to set the default options is not working. When I upload a song to the player, after synchronization, when I go into hijack, the emphatic option is never there until I reboot the player. Then, it always shows up. Do you see anything odd in my config.ini?
