What the title says. This version works with PalmOS 3.0 and higher, but you must have IR hardware in your palm if you expect to beam songs to your Empeg

Get the software here.

You can buy a cheap Palm III on Ebay for less than $40, sometimes closer to $20.

What's the typical range on a Palm's IR output?

I’ve noticed around a 1-2 foot range, this is mostly at night. Mark said during direct sunlight, range might be limited a little more. I have to hold my palm 3 directly in front of the empeg, 1 foot away from it, for the playlist to fully get inserted to the empeg. I haven’t been able to get it to beam if the palm is at an angle to the empeg.

IrDA range is limited to 1 meter, so if you are getting a range of a foot or two, it's about average. I expect that the lens on the Empeg, and the proctective lens on the Palmpilot may limit that even more, and like Oliver said, sunlight will screw with your range, too. I have had to shade the Empeg a bit with my hand to get it to beam in . I think that the IrDA ports on Palms after the III series are a bit better, but we are definately not talking remote range here. IrDA is used in this application as a way to avoid plugging the Palm into the Empeg with a wire, and it works well, you just have to hold it somewhat close.

Eventually I see BT taking over what I'm doing with IrDA. OBEX, which I am using is used with BT also.

Yup, Bloo-tooth.

Bluetooth is very similar to IrDA, only no line-of-sight needed obviously. The newer palm handhelds (Tungsten) have BT built-in, and I think that you can get BT modules for the m series. There would be very little coding involved to get Palantir working with Bluetooth, since OBEX is supported over Bluetooth.

Of course you would have to have to install some kind of BT device in the Empeg, either hardwired like has been done before, or a serial port BT module.
