(I'm particularly proud of the "one hit wonder" singles I have from long lost rock groups of the 80's)
Cool! What a great idea? Do these have their own playlist?
Let's all have a guess at what's in there... "Take on me" from "Ah-ha" would be number one on the list, I think...
Abba <--- How'd they get here?!?!?
You can say it's for demo purposes only: Searching for "Abba" on the remote is "2222". Although I did declare a moratorium on that example a few months ago.

"Take on me" from "Ah-ha" would be number one on the list, I think...It's "A-Ha", and they had 6 top five hits in the UK, according to Hugo's copy of "Guinness British Hit Singles". "Take on me" only got to number 2. "The Sun Always Shines on TV" is their only UK number one. Oops. Roger - not necessarily speaking for empeg

I can't wait to get my lists a going and on the Empeg...only a few more days... *drool drool*
Mine will mostly be punk/emo/indie rock, but i've got a ton of classical, jazz, and some hip hop type stuff to slap on there as well. The only problem is going to be wading through the 35 gigs of mp3's i have to see what has the clout to go on the almighty Empeg! Damn, i wish i could afford that 36 giger... self upgrade here i come.
I wonder if i classify as the youngest Empeg owner!? heheh. I was number #13810 so i have to find SOMETHING to feel special about. =] Anyone under 22 out there?

is that apocalyptica as in the guys with the cellos? i have both of their cds. i really liked what they did with metallica, although i never knew anyone else that listened to them.
Yep, I have always enjoyed their songs, really useful for when I want something relaxing, but a bit different.
also, is bob rivers the twisted christmas guy? i have his version of iron man (i am santa claus) floating around on the empeg somewhere.
Yep again. I have the I Am Santa Claus CD on there, and Wrong Foot Amputated song as well.

One hit wonders of the eighties, eh? Let's see, where did I put my compilation CDs...
The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star Cameo - Word Up Arcadia - Election Day Mi-Sex - Computer Games M.A.R.R.S. - Pump Up The Volume Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran (_the_ quintessential Eighties One Hit Wonder)
Hmmm - two-hit wonders?
Devo - Beautiful World Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way The Stranglers - Skin Deep Mr. Mister - Broken Wings A-Ha - Take On Me Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Right Round Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science The Models - I Hear Motion
...and then we have to include bands like Icehouse, The Cars, Howard Jones, Kate Bush, Blondie, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Split Enz, Yes, Peter Gabriel, Yello, Queen, Pink Floyd, Crowded House, Duran Duran...
Ah, it's just a small portion of the One Hit Wonder population, anyway...

I'm not saying they were, just sort of including them in the Eighties nostalgia...

do you have any modern classical on there?
Depends on how you define modern, I guess. Stravinsky and Prokofiev are about as far as I go in that direction. I agree with your assessment of John Cage et. al., but bear in mind the lessons of history... almost every great composer was reviled to some extent in his own time. The innovators are not appreciated until several generations have passed.

Ah, it's just a small portion of the One Hit Wonder population, anyway...Er, you consider these one hit wonders? Well, de gustibus... (Oops, I read some more of the same thread. OK, so Paul doesn't think they are one hit wonders, merely nostalgia.... Boy, they are just good music !) Anyway, I should better stop reading this thread. I keep interpreting (correcly, after all) your lists as recommendations, and I even don't have to fetch my CC; all detais are there on cdnow and others similar, tempting and expensive places... Heh, it's OK. English isn't your first language (right?), so the straights/straits thing probably doesn't make a lot of sense to you anyhow. I shouldn't tease, since I can't even speak two languages.

So what's the difference between straights and straits? :) I don't mind people correcting my english, in fact I demand people to correct my english, especially the pronounciation :) My husband (who is English that's why I live here in England) doesn't want me to loose my french accent, but I am desparat (sp?) to loose it.
I am raising my sons bilanguale, hope they wont get confused as they are still babies.
Aouali is a trilanguale btw (english is my 3rd language that's why it's baad)

So what's the difference between straights and straits?Well, "dire straits" is an old saying. It means "to be in danger" or in some other kind of difficult situation. I don't know where the origin of the old phrase comes from, but the word "dire" means "serious" or "extreme", and "straits" usually means a narrow passage (usually water) between two impassable barriers (such as continents or mountains or whatever). Hmm, now that I think about it, it doesn't make much sense. But then, old sayings rarely make sense. I'm sure someone will come along and correct me on this, because now I'm not so sure about my definition. On the other hand "straight" means, well, straight. A straight line. In fact, in that context, you wouldn't even say "straights"- it's a non-word. Except that in recent years, the word "straight" is now slang for "heterosexual" when referring to the difference between gay and straight. So in that context, you could say "straights" when referring to more than one straight person. So, in essence, by calling the band "Dire Straights", you're saying they're extremely serious heterosexuals. Which might be true, I don't know, I've never met them. PS: "straights" can also refer to normal people among abnormal people. For instance, sane persons in the company of insane persons. Bill Murray says a great line in Ghostbusters 2. There's a scene where his fellow ghostbusters show up at a fancy restaurant covered in slime and acting crazy, and Bill tells them "You're scaring the straights!" That concludes the English lesson for today. ___________ Tony Fabris

Without wanting to start a flame, but is the irony of an american teaching a french person english, lost on everyone but me? Otherwise, the description is spot on, but "straights" is still not a word, whether they said it in Ghostbusters or not. Paul. Paul Haigh, 6GB, Blue Reg: 4120 - Serial 00254

Reference to myth of Scilla and Haridba (sp?), perhaps? Or to real world dire (dangerous) straits, such as Magellan's at Tierra Fuego (or whatever is original name for Vatrena Zemlja, as we call the tip of South America).
