I'm about to upgrade my empeg to 128g (2 60g drives) and i was adding up all the mp3s that i have, and it only fills up about 70gb. Does anyone here actually have enough mp3s to fill 128gb? I have all my CD's encoded, and plenty of mp3s that i've collected over the years. Most of my good stuff is encoded at 256k anyway. Since my 18gig empeg is full, and almost 3k songs, i'm thinking i can get about 20,000 songs on a 128g empeg. Anyone else have a 128g empeg?

By the way, i'm looking forward to the NYC meet.

I believe that you'll find that 2*60 is 120, not 128. Subtract from that the drive-manufacturer capacity tax (1000000000 bytes per GB versus 1073741824), and you'll find that it's well less than that.

But, to be more than unhelpful, Paul Grzelak has that much. He's been waiting for the 80GB drives to arrive, actually. I believe he may be the only one, though.

yes, you're right! I was thinking of adding the numbers together the way you do with memory chips! 100 gig should still give me enough room for a while. I was getting tired of always moving mp3s off my player everytime i wanted to add new ones.

I've got about 80GB's of MP3's right now. My brother has about 60 on his hard drive. My empeg only has 60 GB capacity (20+40) and only has a portion of all my music.

We (my brother and I) listen to A LOT of music.

later,
ajay

Greetings!

I have 120GB in my players, and they are full. I might be able to fit one more CD if I try, but that is about it. That space is reserved for the new Blue Man Group album coming up in April.

It is now a race - will Hitachi start shipping the 80GB drives and can I get them installed and happy before Harry Potter 5 comes out on audiobook (the US version goes on sale on 21June, still waiting for work on the UK version). That is likely to be 40CDs, between the two versions...

Yep, Paul is the leader in all of this. The BRAVE leader I might add. We dno't even know if these new drives will draw too much power or when the empeg software will be ready for it.

I've got ~108GB capacity in my emepg (48 + 60GB) but as was pointed out, emplode only shows 100GB available. I've got about 100 or so CD's sitting on my hard drive waiting to be added. Another 60GB will "just barely" get me there, so I'm waiting for the 80's to come out so I have room to grow.

My only advice is: Don't buy capacity until you need it because hard drive prices are dropping all the time. Sounds to me like you need the extra space, so that may not be an issue w. you. Normally, I'd tell you to get a 40 or 48GB so that you're not buying capacity you don't need - but 60GB drives are fairly cheap now. Search www.pricewatch.com.

PS - And in case you didn't pick up on it, not only does Paul have an empeg with two 60GB drives in it, he has several! :O

The dual 60s will give you about 111GB useful space. The 80s are just starting to ship (you may have seen my other thread about that one). I will let you know how it goes.

As for being on the leading edge of things, I just like having all of my music and audio available all the time, and the 60s were the only drives that let me do that, until very recently when it has been a bit tight. It is also convenient in the office, since I have it connected to the network there.

Plus I like experimenting!!!

You guys keep full albums mostly, I only keep the singles I like, or songs people wil remotely like.

It would be cool to have the storage to have every song every on it, talk about a logistical nightmare!

Isn't there a upper level limit of how many fid's the empeg can handle anyway? Won't that limit be hit soon by the amount of storage that you can stuff into the empeg>?

Yes, and, although I can't put a particular number on it, yes.

However, there's no reason to assume that version 3 software will have any such limitation at all. The empeg developers are aware of the problem, and they surely want the software to be as robust as possible, since it's intended to be used as a base for more products than just ours.

True. My collection is entirely album based. With singles and single tracks, it is probably easier. I would think filing and finding tracks would be more difficult, though.

The upper limit of fids is based on the number of sectors in the data partition. There is a thread around here, somewhere, that has that, but it is around 28,000 individual fids. I still have about 6,000 free, so I have a bit of space. I tend to rip at a fairly high bitrate (averaging around 220kbps in VBR mode), so my files tend to run a bit bigger.

Blue Man! Dude, i saw them in Vegas a few months back, it was the best show i'd ever seen, ever! Best sound and light i've ever seen. I then saw the ny show and was a bit disappointed after seeing the Vegas one. I have the surround sound DVD mix that they have.... if you're a fan, you should check it out! The entire cd is remixed in 5.1 surround!

I wonder if there is a way to get 5.1 on the digital out cards of the empeg?

Imagine the possibilities!

Another nice feature of having 111 gig is that i can sync emplode with my hard drive of about 80gig... then i'll have a mirror copy instead of scattered mp3s all around.

dang! That's a lot.... did you rip most of them at 256k?
