Hi All,
So I dropped my empeg from about a foot off the ground (in the empeg bag) and guess what? I BROKE MY NIPPLE... Ouch that hurts.
Anyone have a spare display to sell me? I already emailed support, but am looking for a US based alternative. My goal is to get this fixed ASAP...
Also, can anyone in the Bay area help me with the soldering of the new display in when I get it? I'd gladly pay for the time and expertise with beer, dinner, cash and/or any combination of those things... ;-)
- Thanx in advance!
- Jon

when you do the new display, maybe you should pad the nipple. I did to mine, and i havent had any ill effects.

maybe you should pad the nipple Padding would only be useful if the nipple broke from striking something. I don't believe that it's striking anything when it breaks from a drop, I think it's just the sudden deceleration and the angle of the G forces. I fear that adding additional "stuff" around the nipple would increase its chances of breaking rather than decreasing them.

I've always wondered if installing Brian's lighted buttons kit doesn't increase the chance of the nipple breaking since the pcb around the shaft of the knob sits so close to the nipple.
As seen here : (I hope Brian doesn't mind me linking directly to his site)

Actually, the other versions of the knob board with 4LEDs is even closer to the nipple than that!

Hmmm, I'm beginning to worry. By the looks of it, even driving over a pot-hole in the road could break the nipple if that LED board is installed. A reworking is in order methinks.

I know! My kit was also the one with 4 Led's (thanks to a very kind person. You know who you are! BTW, I'm still waiting for news from Brian!), but I couldn't find a pic of that kit installed.
I can't take a pic of my own empeg since I don't have a digital camera here.

Actually, it all seems to depend on the distance of the fall and the angle of impact. My player that I drive with and bring to the office has been through numerous adventures (to which Stu can attest, having repaired the IDE header on that player twice!). The LED board doesn't seem to have a problem with the nipple. It is really the angle and amount of force in the impact. Most notably the angle.

I think you might also be able to increase the distance between the nipple and the board by doing this procedure.

Yes. It does help. When Mark installed the buttonhack, the display's position was adjusted both away from the board and downward. It has helped with the display position and given a bit of space around the nipple. I did not do it myself, though - Mark had already done it during the install.

When I made my board, I made it with a 0.8mm PCB and also cut off the corner by the nipple to reduce the risk of the board hitting the nipple. Attached is a picture of it installed, although it is a bit difficult to see it since I have applied the "Black marker mod".

When I do the button/knob kit installs, I also MOVE the display tube down a few extra millimeters, to give it more margin of clearance. It also makes it easier to read the top of the display in most car dashes, when viewing from above.

Hi All,
I found a small supply of the displays - want to make absolute sure that it is the correct part before I order. The one I can get is the Noritake MN12832E, which I found in another post. Can someone here confirm that this is the absolute correct part number? I already sent a note to Rob, but not sure when he'll get a chance to confirm.
BTW, I'm planning to order 3 so that I can help 2 other people here that need em. I'll sell at my cost (59.10 plus shipping)...
- Thanx!

Ok, found a thread where Hugo confirms that this is indeed the part number. I ordered 3 from Noritake for 59.10 each plus shipping. Anyone else need one?

You have a PM. I wouldn't mind picking up spares for the future, just in case.

Greetings!
I am still surprised you found these. Last I heard, they were discontinued, and only available in quantities of 100 or more. These must be leftovers that someone had in an attic somewhere.

That's not a bad price at all for a backup display, but man, you have to be careful where you store your backup so that your backup doesnt get broken!

Ok, I've ordered 7 of these.
1 for me, 3 for pgrzelak, 1 for mlord, 1 for tman, and one extra (for JeepBastard maybe)?
Store is now closed.
I'll give you guys a total after I get them and am ready to ship em out.

Let us know the details. cuz its important to have a backup screen, (even tho i padded my nipple and it has helped i think) shockwaves can travel thru and item, then reverberate back when it hits a rigid surface that doesn't transmit those waves, causing it to break on the way back.
I hope that doesn;t sound like "The Core" movie science.

Take it to a video & tv repair shop, they should be able to fit it easily.
