Certainly in the case of WMA DRM, it is not possible to license it for Linux (or any GPL OS). That's probably true for this also.

The new HDD portable runs a different OS for that exact reason.

Whoa, different OS? I had always assumed it would be Linux since the player software we currently know and love is running it on. No reason it can't be compiled for something else, of course. But, if you can say, what OS is being used?

I'll have to stop getting my hopes up for PearlHijack now.

eCos - an excellent OS for embedded applications. I believe it was even developed here in Cambridge (at least we keep seeing RedHat guys in the Wrestlers wearing eCos shirts).
