Hugo, what's up with your BBS nick? Was it an attempt to go incognito, or is there an interesting history behind that nick?

It's a long story, but basically it used to be my pseudonym when I was into hacking (mid-late 80's). Hey, I was even on TV (with my voice dubbed & a balaclava on) :)

Since then it's the username I generally use.

Errr, no. There weren't many groups at the time, apart from CCC who invited me to join (86?) - as I was a qualified VAX/VMS sysadmin at 16, this came in handy. I almost got thrown off the training course after (a) using DEC's X25 links to get to altger-munich (a good chatter @ Altos's devlabs in Munich) and (b) trying to get to their dialout modems ;)

...then I got far too busy coding to do any hacking anymore. Still, it was quite fun back then, when there was no such thing as a script kiddie and a lot of the systems on X25 were *wide* open with things like field/uetp logins just left there from installation.

Old hackers don't die, they just lose their site.

I was in 8lgm for a while. You mean: Corrupt Computing Canada?

I so enjoyed VAX/VMS machines. I guess you used to pad out to 026245400050233 or even QSD in france 0208057040540. Writing cool x.25 scanning scripts in DCL. Or making cool patches in Bliss-32 or pass capture prooggies in Fortan. Runiing AUTH and adding a few users oof your own. Disabling OPCOM and edting the logs to erase yoour trails. That damn ACCOUNTING. shucks! dont keep tabs on my processees. Editing the process table to yoou were invisible to show users and show sys. What good was that B2 security class anyway when you could drop in on FIELD/DIGITAL or HASP or INGRES or other default login or software package account install.

Taking over x.75 gateways and monitoring traffic. Running thru JANET like there would never be a tommorrow.

Those were the days for me.. now I just listen to mp3s. hmmm.

No, I meant Chaos Computer Club (Germany). I used to run a hacking BBS, on a BBC B (100k floppy->400k floppy->5Mb hdd, 1200/75 then 2400bps modem), then BBC B with second processor running something which looked just like VMS, then an Amiga A1000 with TagBBS then another one (can't remember the name) that I wrote a fido gateway for, then my own multi-line software on an Acorn Archimedes (ARM based)...

Yes, used a lot of X25, but you appear to have a much better memory than me for NUAs ;)

Problem with editing logs is a lot of people used printing terminals on vaxes, which were a bit hard to erase...

Not if they don't lock the printer room. "Oh, look, another paper jam."

yeah , paper trail. but back then. checking that stuff was an after thought after someone ran thru all your resources or the company got the bill for all those x.75 gateway calls to other contries thru the packet swicthed networks.

Any chance of my EMPEG running VMS?

Though the empeg has about 200x the power of my VAX 11/750 (currently rusting in my parents garage) and 4x the RAM.... no :)

I got one of them in the garage....
Along side a Prime 2253 and a Sun 3/330
All of them work though (sort of)

You could always port the free VMS project to ARM (http://www.free-vms.org/
