Your Empeg will last years and years. The only moving part is the hard drive which get cheaper and cheaper all the time. The rest is solid state and unlikely to break unless you drop it. Even if something did go wrong, its seldom something that can't be fixed by users on this BBS, or by sending to Rob Schofield.

Yes, there's always *a* chance. It might be 1 in a million, but who knows?

Truthfully, we don't know the details of the Visteon deal. We don't know if Visteon might ask for an aftermarket edition. We don't know if Rio's new owners may have plans of their own for an OEM Mk3. Or if the Visteon deal may preclude that. (I'd hope not). There is much we don't know - and much that Rob cannot tell us.

So I can't see where you're coming from with such a definitive answer.

To my knowledge, the Empeg is the only pull out unit with RCA outs, correct? Even the "mk3" won't be a pull out, if I remember that thread right. To me this is the best feature of the Empeg, and the reason I no longer carry CDs. I have all my music everywhere I go. As for color screens etc, I personally could care less if it isn't a pull out unit.

It does seem my needs are different from yours, however.

Fancy gimmicks, thats all. Why do you need a full colour screen to play music? Empeg has no gimmicks, its a serious piece of high end audio equipment. Theres nothing out there to beat it.

Gimmicks would be nice as an extra, but I'm not really bothered.

Agreed, and I could live without them. They are a very nice touch though, but if there was a trade-off between better audio clarity, and visuals, I know which one i'd lose.

The Big Issue for me is the GPS and Nav, my little car doesn't have room to add a screen and the Unit by Alpine, Kenwood Etc has a built in screen but only a 10,16 or 30 G drive and no where near the Ease of use of the empeg, ( I have used mine so much I can find most songs by feel alone I don't need to even look)

Okay, and all the "gimmicks" he mentioned could also be "nice touches" in the next generation car audio player. You're walking a fine line if you're trying to delineate gimmicks and nice touches.

Because when I am going an Address of 1313 Mockingbird lane in Ut and told to be there on tuesday it would be nice to have a GPS using the same Unit I have . I know there are a bunch of GPS Projects using the extra cpu cycles on the Empeg to port out to a PDA it seem cumbersome and clunkie and a MK3 or MK4 with color and a GPS built in is just what the doctor ordered.

You can't fit more than one din unit in that hearse jalopy? Too many turbo pressure readouts and whatnot?

Ok, I'm sure most of us would love a unit that had an upgradable hard drive, was pull-out with home RCA's, had a fantastic UI, played DVDs on a 36" widescreen, made coffee while you use GPS etc etc, oh... and played music. I just don't see if coming anytime soon. I HOPE I'm wrong and Camelot appears next week, but the public are just about coping with mp3s, so who knows if the market is ready. I suppose Visteon is paying hundreds of thousands to find this information out.

That is the Issue The Big Guys already have the Color Screens, the DVD movies, ther GPS and Nav systems, but there Mp3 Interfaces Sucks Rocks compaired to the Empeg

Sony and Pioneer have 10 Gig None-upgradable units you need to rip from the car ( Barf me out gag me with a spoon)

Kenwood has the PhatNoise box (You can upload to that from your home computer)

Alpine has a Cartage Style unit that is removable and you upload to it from your computer

Empeg has the Best Menu driven Interface and the easy of use no one comes close to, but even if it had a GPS how usefull would it be on a 4 Bit blue Screen

I'm not sure if you've followed the GPS projects, but they're pretty useful now, and becoming more useful. Granted, if you want a rich, detailed maps, look elsewhere, but if getting from point A to point B is your goal, then gpsapp is starting to evolve into something very nice.

Well, my gps-enabled empeg got me to and from the NY meet last weekend. The only problem that I had was due to bad mapsonus routing. Had I simply printed the mapsonus route I would have been screwed, but since I had GPS I just meandered my way towards the dot. It worked.

GPSapp does not port out to a PDA. It's all self-contained within the empeg. The only external part is the GPS receiver/antenna, which can often be mounted stealth. Mine is buried inside my dashboard and works fine.

Agreed, the empeg screen isn't the best for displaying maps, and the GPSapp software is still a work in progress (especially in terms of getting good map data into it). But if you've already got the empeg, and space is a concern, then it's a great option for doing zero-footprint, low-cost GPS.

That would be my ideal setup, when I get some money. Empeg in one din slot, and one of the units with fold-out LCD screen for GPS, TV, DVD, PS2, Xbox, and the like in the other din slot.

Everything you could ever want.

Correct. You have to grab a route from the web before you start your trip, and send that route to the player with FTP. Using some clever scripting and a shell extension in the registry, I've gotten it down to just a few clicks.

But it only has to be this way "for now". They're working on how to get the map data into it more easily and in more useful ways. Like I said, it's a work in progress.

I didn't get that impression. He's just asking about features. I don't think that "these features do not match my needs" constitues "pissed off".

Thanks Tony,

No I am not pissed off at all I have had my EMpeg for nearly 3 years I love it I don't want to part with it but my car is small and I need other options,

A MK3 with gps would fit the bill and I won't care if it cost 7000 Bucks if it was a good as my Old Blue MK2, I am jsut annoyed that I have to choose between waiting 4 years or loosing my Empeg for something that is not half as nice, but has the other options I need in my job.

I've been considering something similar. Crutchfield catalog lists a bunch of fold out screens, but they all only talk about DVD playback, not integrated GPS. And most of them are JUST the screen in that slot, you need yet another slot for the DVD drive.

I once saw a really nice GPS system which had a "3D" option, where it would show you sort of a "chase helicopter" view of the map and your route. It was the clearest and easiest to follow system. In some cities, it even had major building landmarks a la flight simulator. Which one was that? Having something like that would be awesome.

So if I really wanted to go all-out on such a system, what's available out there? Anyone got links?

Best bet is the Alpine for about 3800 Bucks Total 7 inch screen 16 gig hard drive and Nav/gps system

Or kenwood with PhatNoise Box for about 3300

A MK3 with gps would fit the bill and I won't care if it cost 7000 Bucks...

For $7000 you could find another car with 2 DIN slots and get your stereo removed and reinstalled.

I take that back Best best would be a Empeg Mod that would give you RCA output so you could pipe it to a Screen Screw the Empeg knock off boxes and get the real thing

I wish I could find a Different car for 7k but no dice I still owe 22k on my current car and the install on my stereo was well over 3k, but it was a nice try.

That Kenwood system looks pretty neat. I liked this:

AUDIO FEATURES
- Speaker Connection for Supplied Speaker
This means I don't have to pipe it into the AUX to hear it work. I can still hear the turn directions even if I've got the music going.

Yep Double layers of DynaMat Ultra on the floors doors and Roof, 4 pairs of Diamond Audio Hex s600 Speakers, Custom Center Console for my Pioneer DEQ-9200 and a bunch of Extra junk.

BTW how come I can't seem to find the "Quote" button?

I'm hoping for a TTS enabled GPSapp.

So it can tell me to turn left instead of right that much more clearly?

Of course, that little problem should be taken care of pretty soon. Jan and I found the root of what was causing that problem. Sometimes the map data has very small errors in it, making an intersection look like a tiny little loop only a few feet wide instead of a clean turn. Seems like a clean turn when zoomed out at the proper distance, but at a very small scale, there's noise that needs to be corrected somewhere in the process.

I agree, though, it would be cool to have GPSapp do voice overlay, especially if you could leave it on the player screens and have the voices come up in the mix.

In fact, I was thinking that a nice addition to GPSapp would be a pop-up mode which allowed you to stay mostly on the music screen and have it pop up only near turns.

Best Bet would be a RCA Video Output from the Empeg (I don't care if it is only 4 bit) and Plug that into the Aux Input of one of the DVD changers that have NAv and GPS, then hit the Goodwill stores for a Old IR Rabbit (IR remote Extender) so you can use the Empeg remote and keep the Empeg Mounted under a chair or in the trunk.

LOL. I decided that I wasn't going to mention that issue...

Yeah, I've been thinking a bit about future GPSapp 'modes' recently. Having used GPSapp 'for real' to navigate a few previously unknown routes last weekend, I got a better handle on some of the current quirks and what I'd like to see, and yes, a background mode with auto-wake near waypoint would be one of them. TTS and/or beeps would be another. There's a whole load of ideas which really belong in a different thread. I have to run out right now, but remind me if I haven't created a suitable thread by the morning!

Wow, gpsapp looks really cool. Do you guys have any recommendations on which gps models would work best with it?

One more thing- in the FAQ it says that quality map data has to be licensed. How does that work? Is it very expensive, or would it be possible for individuals to purchase it for their empegs?

I was wondering that too. And also, is GPSApp useable for European Empeggers and where could I get (or buy) the maps I need then?

The problem is that the quality map data is proprietary, meaning that it's in a file format that we don't even know how to decode.

If I could simply take the commercial Street Atlas CD and copy its contents onto my Empeg's hard disk, that would be the ultimate. Unfortunately, even if we could do that, the data would be meaningless gibberish to GPSapp. Or to any other program other than StreetAtlas for that matter.

The only map files with an open format just don't have as much quality data as we really need.

I've edited out the incorrect text in the FAQ entry that used the word "licensed".

If you can find a web site that puts up European route information as latitude/longitude numbers (the way MapsOnUs does), then you could modify GPSapp's python script to screen-scrape that web site instead of MapsOnUs.

The reason GPSApp uses MapsOnUs is because it's the only web-based mapper that gives its routes lat/long data. At the moment, If it weren't for that site, GPSapp wouldn't work.

I came up with the link quick because that is the system I am eyeing. Same as the system coming in new Lexus cars. I used a co workers Lexus model and it is excellent.

Until guys@empeg manage to talk bosses into releasing something MkIII+-ish, I would stick with empeg plus Street Pilot or equivalent. I mean, one does not really need navigation often enough to make dashboard velcroable handheld that inconvenient, does one?

I do, I am on the road 220 Plus days a Year, most of the time to places I have never been before, add that to the fact I get lost if I turn around in the bath-tub too fast and Bingo A Nav System is needed..

Plus that hal Like Voice repeting to me over and over "Turn Left in 1 mile" would keep my eyes on the road.

Ugh! I like travelling, but too much is too much! What kind of job is that? (I could only think of trucking or rental car repositioning, but then you don't drive your car...)

Plus that hal Like Voice repeting to me over and over "Turn Left in 1 mile" would keep my eyes on the road.

All is good untill you try to open a door, and it says 'I am sorry, Dave, I am affraid I can not to that!'
