Does anybody else think it's completely retarded that Arnold is running for Governor in CA? I mean, how long has he even been able to speak english?

A very very long time. In fact, according to the Leno thing last night, he moved to CA in 1968.

Makes me wonder if the accent is all a carefully-maintained act.

Attention: You have used the word "act" in connection with Arnold Schwarzenegger. For accuracy's sake, please retract/rephrase.

He may be very slow to lose his accent, though. He was barely understandable in Conan (did you understand ``Crom will ask me the riddle of steel'' the first time you heard it?) and that was in '82, 14 years after he moved to the US, by your reckoning. Surely he didn't have a plan that far back to retain his accent.

I was going to say the same thing. He didn't seem like he spoke or understood any English in that movie - like he learned his lines phonetically. One thing I can say for him, though - he's a much better speaker now than Bush even with his accent.

Did you see him in "Hercules in New York"? Even that far back he spoke English.
However, they dubbed his voice with someone else's.
So, it's very funny to see Arnold with someone else's voice coming out of his mouth.

Especially if it's French or German

Yes, I do spend too much time in boring hotel rooms...

Julf, I still use a dial-up connection a lot of the time.
Your quarter-megabyte avatar is killing me!

Obligatory semi-on-topic comment: I really enjoyed getting to see Klingons on Star Trek speaking in German. It's just a little disconcerting when the other characters speak German as well. I've also been told that it is hilarious to see Beavis yelling "Fuego! Fuego!" in Spanish.

Ouch! Sorry! Never checked the size of the pic - rather silly to have that huge pic, that then gets downscaled to tiny when displayed anyway :-/

I've now changed the avatar pic to a slightly more sensibly sized one.

My aunt moved to the US and married a US citizen. It took many years to get her citizenship and a lot of effort. From what I read you have to somehow renounce all other citizenships too, thought the UK lets you have a dual citizenship if the other country allows it.

A lot of countries allow dual citizenship - but US doesn't, as far as I know. But does the US still have the silly historical things they used to have, like a baby getting US citizenship if it happens to be born in the US, even if both parents are non-US citizens?

Yes, one of the guys here extended he contract for an extra 2 months so his daughter was born here, that means when she hits 18 she has the choice of which passport she wants.

The US also allows for dual citizenship. I know, as I have it. In the past, they didn't allow it, but they relaxed that rule sometime in the '90s, I believe.

And yes, any child born in the US is a US citizen, though, as I mentioned above, the US may have added some sort of restrictions about how long the parents have to have been in the US before the child was born.

She should be able to get both passports -- that's what I did. The passport is just a document saying you're a citizen of the issuing country. Since she's a US citizen by birth, she can have a US passport. If she was registered with the the consulate of whatever nation her parents are from (and her parents are going back to live in that country), then she's also a citizen of that country, albeit born abroad, and can therefore have that passport, as well. On my trip to Costa Rica in February, I used my US passport while on US soil, and my Canadian passport all the rest of the time.

should, yes. But unfortunately a lot of countries require you to give up any other citizenship.

D'oh! Oh, well. The only sport I do is mountain biking, and I'm a far cry from the Olympics -- heck, I haven't even managed to podium in my Sport class, yet.
