Started out with the "linux inside" logo available on the net, then found a couple more of the characters in pictures
here.
Then I was only missing the "g"which I created by mirroring the "p" and grafting on the bottom of a mirrored "e".
Then cut'n'pasted letter by letter and positioned them in the swirl. Since the original pics were rather small it gets a bit blurry as you increase the size, so it's not good for a big pic on the web.
But to create the actual sticker: print the pic in wanted size, get some vinyl sticker material in wanted color, cut to suitable size and tape down on a "cutting board" (something stiff you don't mind getting an occasional nick). Then tape your print-out on top and trace the outlines with sharp pointy knife - you have to "average" some of the blurryness. Since it's hand cut, 2 consecutive stickers will never be 100% identical (but fairly close). You get the hang of the required pressure (enough to cut through printed paper and vinyl, but not fully through the backing paper) pretty quick, and it's no disaster if you occasionally cut through
Then peel away excess material, put an adhesive plastic (meant for books) on top to allow you to "lift" the vinyl from the backing paper. Lift the vinlyl from the backing paper and apply to where you want. Rub down hard and then peel off the book adhesive (try to peel 90 degrees, or more, against the surface).
Sounds involved, but is fairly easy. Actual cutting takes about 15-20 minutes.
