Hello everybody!

I have browsed to the whole Forum but find not the key answers to my questions.

First of all:
I am thinking about to build a WLAN. What do I need? Which are the best hardware for the Access Point.

Next what do I need to buy for the empeg? I am thinking about to use GPSapp and tcpdump. What is the best hardware. What are known problems/solutions?

I am located in Germany, so sorry for my bad english.
Hope I can get a clue on how to get the things done.
Hopefully awaiting your responses

Zebulon

This is discussed (even recently!) in at least a couple of other threads.

The answer is that you need a wireless ethernet bridge, which plugs into the ethernet port of the Empeg, and converts that ethernet into 802.11b. Zero configuration changes on the Empeg. D-Link apparently has a decent one that sometimes appears for insanely cheap prices. There are other brands as well.

Cheers

Yes I have read the others but this D-Link is very huge. WLAN Cards vor Notebooks are much smaller. Why is it so big?

Or is the D-LInk the Access Point of my WLan?

Thanx a lot for your answers

Are you looking at the DWL-810? It's larger than one might like, but far from huge.

I think that what Zebulon is getting at is (correct me if I'm wrong though..) is that he already has a wi-fi network in his home/garage etc and is referring to the tiny network adapters that you see for laptops and PCs (e.g. a little USB dongle).

I guess (not being an expert) the answer is that these are all USB devices and I guess Empeg doesn't have a USB port hence the need to connect via the ethernet -correct?

Well, has the wrong type of USB port.

Right, as Julf said, it's got USB, just not USB master. FAQ entry here.

It's probably bigger because it includes it's own power regulators. The USB and PC-Card ones draw nice regulated electricity from the PC. But the external ethernet ones currently (pun intended) have to supply their own power. So, yet another AC-Adapter, and some voltage/current regulation inside the device itself.

For streaming music, WLAN is ok, but I find 802.11b too flakey for synching. I was mever able to resolve problems with inconsistent pings.

Perhaps a range of 20ft (and passing through a floor) is asking too much for 802.11b

I sync across a wireless bridge from my upstairs office to my downstairs entertainment center all the time. I'm not sure if it does the find-via-broadcast correctly, but it works to specify an IP for Jemplote to look for specifically.

Heh, actaully there's a bunch of netwok hardware between my PC and my empeg:

[pc]---[hub]----[802.11bridge]--/\/\/\/--[802.11bridge]----[hub]---[empeg]

Ain't technology wonderful?

What sort of ping performance do you get ? By way of comparison, after much tweaking, my setup is pretty consistent at about 26ms average round trip time, with a 12% packet loss
