will RMM be compatible with the empegs? is dupe checking via the 64k chunks implemented there as well?
are nested playlists in the works for the karma?
how about an autosync to hard drive feature?
EDIT: in my experience, i didnt like the way that the current RMM for my s10 didnt allow for drag-and-drop support. is this implemented in 2.0?

"will RMM be compatible with the empegs?"
From what I understand, the eventual goal is that Empeg will run off of the same protocol as the Karma ("protocol2"), which will be nice

It's a very bad idea for more than one reason. The main one would be that since this BBS is hosted for free, the actual owners of the server wouldn't take too well to it being tested against the slashdot effect. Another is that you'll end up with a huge number trolls on here.

My impression is that this is not a terribly high priority (for obvious reasons), but since no other Rio products have a GUI like Emplode, most likely the only future for continued Empeg support is to transition us over to a common platform (i.e. RMM).

I really hope someday soon, as, well, this is still the feature that is most useful to me on a device that may hold my entire music collection. Other then that, very cool from what I have seen so far. Now to decide when I need one for music while riding the motorcycle.

How does Rio Music Manager compare to emplode. Does it work as good for changing track info.
The tagging UI is the same as in emplode -- I lifted the code directly. Moreover, it allows you to use the same UI for editing the tags on files on your PC (in your Media Library).
Does the karma have it's own database like the empeg or does it just use the tags.
It has its own database. It's not the same as the empeg's database. It supports UTF8 and is better optimised for memory usage.

You can drag files from the Media Library window to the portable device window. You can drag files from Windows Explorer to the portable device window. You can drop files on the portable icon on the sidebar. See the screenshot.
You can also use drag and drop for playlist creation.

I may be able to have jEmplode control both Empeg and Pearl together (perhaps sync between them also)
Now that would be cool...
Glad to see you're onboard with the empeg team with this

i was thinking about being able to specify a root directory in RMM, and whenever you add/delete files/folders to the root, at sync up the changes will be reflected with the karma. also, if you make changes to the tags on the files, then will RMM pick those changes up and transmit them to the karma?

You can drag files from Windows Explorer to the portable device window.
cool. that was what i was looking for. i found it easier to use windows search rather than navigate using the My Computer tab in RMMv1.6.

navigate using the My Computer tab
That's because you're not supposed to use the My Computer tab (now a separate window). You're supposed to use the database. It has searching now, too.

That interface looks very good, Roger. And do I see that RMM 2.0 also works with the S players? Those folks will be chomping at the bit for a 2.0 download, won't they?

That is a 30 gig ipod.
The slate is a 1.5 gig unit.
Also in RMM2.0, you can drag files over, but not folders or m3u files.

Here are a few high-res shots of the new rio players:
http://gear.ign.com/articles/433/433165p1.html
Just click on small images to get the large ones!
Display looks nice and crisp on karma!! What is its resolution? bitdepth?

Rio basically kept the firmware, tweaked it, and put it into a new shell.
From what I remember the Riot was nothing to do with the empeg team. And wasn't the Riot interface quite different?

From what I've seen of the Karma, the interface of the Karma and Riot are kinda similar.... not that that's a bad thing.
Karma has nothing to do with the Riot though and empeg did not work on the Riot.

The Karma and Riot UI's are superficially similar but there's no common code at all. IGN got the wrong end of the stick.

Ethernet is 100 megabit, of course. I don't know how well it's speed-optimized against USB 2.0 since I don't have a USB 2.0-capable machine to test with. I know that ethernet is faster than USB 1.0, I just don't know how much.
So is there a noticeable difference in speed when using the usb2.0 vs 100mb ethernet?

Yes, large. Ethernet has to deal with running a TCP stack (& so on). It will improve over time, but even 100Mbit ethernet is nowhere near the speed of USB2.0, which is direct to disk with no CPU involvement at all.
We're taking maybe 6x speed increase with USB2.0.
