Man you guys are ballsy... I can't risk 160GB of music (I lost a lot of music with an earlier beta by finding the "cut and paste" bug where emplode forgot to paste!)
But crossfading would be so so nice!
Anyway, even if I'm not taking part, it still is like Christmas morning isn't it! :P
Was ext3 part of 3.00alpha?

Well, I wasn't going to load it but what the heck, I'll load it on the spare that's still in the box. I knew I bought that thing for a reason...
Thanks! (just have to wait for the kid to go to sleep before I can play)

Nope. Doesn't seem to be any new filesystem support. My old ext3 support still works though Overall it seems reasonably usable for an alpha (been playing for a couple hours). The low bitrate bug is the only thing that has been an issue for me.

Its when the song playing fades away at the end and a new song will fade in. Like on the radio. It makes song transitions more smooth.

Is the cross-fading a manual on/off toggle or can it be enabled/disabled via a playlist?

Synchronize once. Yes, but empload crashes whenever I try. I did not, however, write down the error message, so that probably doesn't help much. I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you know exactly what it is. Also I might force a sync in 2.0 before upgrading just to make sure everything looks good before the upgrade.

Try with jEmplode, or whichever of the old or new emplode didn't crash already.
I used jEmplode, which worked fine. In fact, I *couldn't* use emplode. Well, maybe I can now, I installed VirtualPC earlier.

You are not the only one, I am having the same problem. I am not able to get it to connect to empload and the error I'm getting is: Download failed while checking database, error 0xc0041002, says the same thing with a serial connection. Also I reloaded 2.0 and sync before upgrading that still did not help the problem.

if you're running emplode 2.0final, do changes to the database affect the database or dabase3 file?
also, a while back, someone suggested that non-critial tags (i.e. info, etc.) would be excluded from the database to save memory. did that happen?
lastly, is there still a 1024 char limit to the info tag? if the above was implemented, long tags won't be a worry anymore, right? i need to put my tracklists/cuefile somewhere

FerretBoy what OS are you using. I switched from Windows 98 to XP and it worked fine. For some reason v3 wouldn't connect to emplode using 98 for me it maybe different for other users?

I just had a nasty little 3.0 Alpha related scare I thought I'd share with everyone. (The player is fine now)
First off, I should say that I installed 3.0 Alpha earlier today, and it's been running fine. No trouble really at all, except for the "database rebuilds every time" issue, but a synch fixed that up.
So I decided to throw Hijack on there...
I downloaded 341, and used Tony's logo editor. Pretty standard.
Unfortunately, instead of getting the usual smiley face, I got a rather unfriendly error message:
"Error status in readbyte 16"
I thought "Hmmm.. That's weird..." and rebooted the player to see if that made a difference.
To my shock, the player would not boot. Not in the house, or in the car. All it would do on power up was flash the LED, as if it was in standby mode. And no amount of clicking or prodding seemed to have any effect.
I was stuck in permanent standby mode. Not a happy thought.
I even tried to connect via Emplode with the serial cable, so I could reload either the 2.0 or 3.0 Alpha software, but it couldn't even detect the player.
I thought for sure I was hosed.
Well anywayz, to make a long story short, after much messing around, and numerous "Error status in readbyte 16" messages, Tony's logo editor decided to work it's magic, and Hijack suddenly installed successfully. And since then, the player has been fine.
Aaaahhh... All is well in narnia once again.

Please note that the "readbyte 16" error indicates serial communication trouble and is unrelated to 3.0.
I'd be checking the serial cable for frays, etc... I was having the weirdest problems with the serial stuff at one time, and discovered it was just a cable that had gone bad (frayed at the flex point).
Also, were you using the last build of Logoedit? We fixed some bugs in upload.exe that might have caused the readbyte 16 error in earlier versions.
The reason the player wouldn't boot is that it erased the flash but never finished filling it up with the new kernel.

I'm using version 1.7.
It could very well be my cable...
It's been a little while since I've used it, and that would also explain why it sudenly worked again.
Thanks!
Hope I didn't scare anyone away from trying 3.0...

OK,
I made it. I installed 3.00 Alpha3, got the rebuild problem, synched and now it is working great. So far.
Hoping that is is of some help:
I updated Emplode to 2.10 . Tried to upograde the player sw and failed. Tried again with emplode 2.00, adn failed again. Then realized the upgrade.exe had not been changed. I so tried to upgrade starting upgrade.exe directly, without having emplode running, and I succeeded.
I got the rebuild problem, as I said. So I started emplode 2.00 again, which started to synch automatically. After it had done, I synched manually once more. Problem solved.
Now I am wondering whether I should try or not emplode 2.10.
I enabled crossfading. In a while I'll go and test if it works and if the radio+rds works. If so, I'm happy. Really!

I AM HAPPY!
- The radio works beautifully!
Question One:
What is the difference between presets and store?
- The crossfading is simply fantastic! I set it up to 5s and i love it!
- Whatever the technical reason for it is, the pitchbend is fun!
Question Two:
What is pitchbend for, besides having fun?
In case I did not stress it enough: I AM HAPPY!! I HAVE MY RADIO AGAIN!!!
Now I need to reinstall HiJack, but I want to test simple 3.0a3 for a while, first.
I AM HAPPY!!!!

FerretBoy what OS are you using. I switched from Windows 98 to XP and it worked fine. I was using both 98 and 2000, but not XP. I did the upgrade from the 98 machine. This time I'm going to try to connect with jEmpload.

Excellent! That worked and I am a VERY happy camper. The cross fading sounds awesome, now all I need are some annoying DJ's (but you can wait to implement that particular feature indefinitely).
One question, though (there’s always one, right?): Is there a particular reason that all of my wma files aren’t cross fading? The rest work great, but all of my wma files just start with no fade in. Do I need to re-encode these as mp3s?

Well, you know that song that you always tried to singalong with but couldn't quite hit all the notes? Pitchbend it!

I've uploaded about 5000 ogg files using emplode 2.10. The process hung if I was doing it over ethernet, so I connected with USB and let it run overnight, which it looks like was sucessful. After each upload attempt I had to sync with emplode 2.0 to rebuild the database. It looks like there's something funny going on with the arp cache, when the ethernet upload failed, the console spit out a bunch of "neighbour table overflow" messages.
Has anyone been able to get to a shell? Each time I try the player crashes with a memory violation error.

Man, It is way too fun. (I've already been using it to leave jacked up messages on people's voice mail)
Seriously though, it gives me an idea.
Wouldn't it be cool if they used the pitchbend functionality for seeking?
Just hold down the button, and it starts to slowly speed up and up...
And it should be trivial to make it play backwards too.
That would be sooooo much more usable then the "eep! brap! click! tprang! pop!" method that we have now...

The other thing that's fun, is to put on something nice and crunchy, slow it down to like 20%, and then crank up the volume.
I had Skinny Puppy going like that, and it hit a note that was so low, the whole car was shaking, but you couldn't hear anything.
You gotta love it...

Yeah it is! I particularly like "The End of the World As We Know It" jacked way up. Whoa! That makes me wonder... That's the song I use for stress-testing emphatic's lyrics scrolling. I wonder what happens to emphatic when it plays the "Alvin & The Chipmunks" version..
(moves over to other side of desk where empeg lives)
Wow. Horiztonal scrolling, not surprisingly, didn't do so hot. To my surprise, it does just fine with vertical scrolling... Reading them that fast is the hard part.
