OK, I've taken the top off, and I can't see any damage to the VFD nipple - even the little end bobble of glass that's quite close to the Pulsing LED of Power is untouched. I can't see any damage to the display cable either, but I haven't taken the hard drive tray off and had a really close look. There is a scorch mark near the bottom right-hand corner of the VFD, though, near a wire or component that comes up close to the glass. Is this normal? (I don't know, I've never taken the front off before.
I've yet to test its response to serial commands, and as it's a Mark I I can't telnet into it or similar. The log of the serial session is:
