No, not all IR remotes work - it needs to operate in the proper frequency range (IIRC 38-40kHz) and there are some that work at a markerdly higher frequency than that.

The Kenwood one works - not sure about the Pioneer one...

Ok, so if I buy the kenwood one will it work as it ?
Will I need to "remap" keys
will I loose any functions on the empeg remote if I remap to use the steering wheel one ?

Yup, the Kenwood works directly - IIRC, all the keys do something that the empeg listens to, but you may want to change what keys do what function on the empeg (ergonomics / what you do most while driving).

You won't (to the best of my knowledge, might be wrong...) lose any functionality from the buttons/knob/normal remote, the steering wheel just goes in parallell...

The other one may works as well - try a search of the forum with the model number of the remote and see if it's been mentioned before...

I have been using my Pioneer remote for over two years now...Hijack enabled it to work even better. There are many posts about steering wheel remotes and their merits from the early days of the BBS if you dig for them ...

Both of those remotes will work fine. I was using the Kenwood before my previou car was stolen and Tony (ynot) is using the Pioneer as far as I remember.

As Bruno mentioned, I've been very happy with my Pioneer CD-SR77 remote which is much like the Pioneer pictured there. I think the CD-SR80 is the newer model, and people have used it successfully, but don't quote me on that. With creative use of Hijack's IR translation functionality (yes, you do need to "map" the button codes via Hijack) you can get a LOT of functionality out of the 11 available buttons.

Tony, can you get the Empeg to recognize long button presses from your Pioneer SR-77?

Yes, except for one of the bottom two buttons on the front, which seems to be goofy, and sends an alternating sequence of button codes when held (or something like that.) Otherwise, they all work for short and long presses.
