Is it illegal to sell old plates then? Prolly why I can't get hold of a pair of CA Exempt plates on ebay then! I can get anything made up in standard pressed lettering but I need one with the diamond E which the pressed plate suppliers can't do

edit: This is for the UK so technically I can't use *any* kind of pressed plates or fancy-pants US-style typeface, but of course it's only illegal if you get caught!

Maybe it's illegal in California. In Texas and Ohio, I can get a correct year plate for my car (1970) and use the plates after registering. I remember some guys complaining that Davis had made it illegal to run with the black plates unless they were originally issued with your car.

Check this thread for an alternate source for your plates.

I'm not sure if he can do exempt plates, but you might shoot him a note.

I have a buddy who picked up a German plate for the front of his Volkswagon off of eBay.

At least in NC, it's required that your relinquish unused plates. This is often overlooked in the case of a totalled car, though.

Have you tried LicensePlates.tv? They claim to be able to do stuff that's not shown on the web site and they might be able to do it.

I still have two of my old plates. They were vanity plates, so maybe that has something to do with it.

A neighbor back home has license plates all over the walls of his garage. Either the majority or all of them are real, but I'm not sure. He's got all kinds, but they might be mostly from Virginia. I'll see if I can find out.

In california, if you can find two matching plates from '62 on back and have the same year car to match, you can bring them to the DMV and register them to your car. From '56 to '62 all cars used plates that said '56 and had a metal tab added to yearly registration. I had a '58 done up this way.

In '62 cali went to the black & gold plates. I think around '70 they went to blue and gold. You can keep the black & gold plates as long as they are on your car, but you can't put them on if it was ever registered with later plates.

You can keep the vanity plates, but they only became available in the blue plate era. The only exception to this is the dmv had amateur radio call letter plates in the black era, and you do see some of those on new cars.

At one time the cali dmv wanted to collect up all the original black & gold plates so they could release a special plate the USC folk. This didn't sit too well with the classic car folk.

Have you tried LicensePlates.tv? They claim to be

Most likely, they are selling garbage,. Definitely, they are not selling real Italian plates. This one, for example:

- When "AR" series was issued, no blue bands existed. They were in fact illegal.
- We do not have any expiration date in our plates. The "05" is supposed to be the ISSUE date of the plate, therefore these guys must be owning a DeLorean, and somebody in 2005 mus be really mad "now".
- The font used is wrong.

I am not saying they're not selling what's in the picture. But that's NOT an Italian plate, for sure.

The Swedish plate on my Saab is from licenseplates.tv. I think it looks good. Probably not accurate, but it really looks like an official piece. The paint reflects and has reflective markings on it like real (US) plates do.

If you have a close-up of the plate I'll grade it From what I can see on the pic, it's close...

At the top of the pic is the current style Swedish plate, below is a 3.5 year old one (no blue EU stripe, different font, not as long)

They'll print on them whatever you tell them. Obviously it's not a real license plate. It's a mockup. But it's a well-done mockup.

This reminds me. I once went and got 4 horns from a junkyard ($2 a piece) and hooked them all up in parallel with my existing horn. When I hit the horn, it sounded like a train was 5 feet away. Great fun. I even got one of the old style Aooooga horns. Sorry for the weak onomatopoeia.

Yes, but I'd like a mockup that doesn't look such, otherwise what's the point? At least the italian one should be improved. Not so good IMHO. Don't know about the others.

Rob, I'd love to have a plate like that! Not possible to have customized driving plate in Italy, unfortunately. You get always XX xxx YY format, and it's sequential, and you only get what you're given.

That does look good, but tomorrow I'll see if I can snap some shots of new plates with E, M, P and G's for a better comparison of the font.

I wouldn't be surprised if the font is the same for all their europlates. It seems the only thing that changes between them is the letter in the euroband. I will try to make-out what the reflective stamps say and post it here.

Vanity plates are kinda stupid, but are fun. To respond to the original post, I still have my custom NY liberty plates. When NY moved everyone to the new Empire plates, you were not asked to return your old plates.

These used to be on my Suzuki Sidekick. Then I got issued SPMICRO empire plates. They are currently at the DMV being stored in case I want to ever put SPMICRO on a car again (probably not).

These are the latest addition to my custom plates. These are currently registered to my 1993 Trooper, but I haven't put them on yet.
