No chance, but the Receiver should be available from UK highstreet retail outlets soon.

Interesting timing - I just got an email from Rio Customer Support in the US saying I'll be able to get one from the US store at *only* $75 shipping.

I think that I'll hold off.

Rob, do you know what the UK price point is? actually, I mean , can you tell us?

Paul.

I just bought the DELL version of the RIO Receiver via Ebay and I must say it is an excellent piece of kit.
I had that and the HPNA card installed in my PC within 15 minutes of receiving the package, it is that simple to set up.
The only problem I have is ripping MP3's from CD's on my PC, as the PC crashes after encoding about 30 seconds of recording a track! I have W2K with a HP Cd Writer as well as a Mitsui(?) CD-ROM and it is same which ever CD player I use. Anyone any suggestions? I have already replaced the memory and removed the Adaptec CD-Writer software.
I have tried Audiograbber, and Realjukebox plus one other that I can't remember the name of.

When you say your PC crashes, perhaps you could describe it a little better ? Hard hang needing power off/on button ? Blue Screen - whats the error message ? Another error message ?

Depends which software I use,
Real Jukebox just hangs and has to be killed, where as AudioGrabber and Media Jukebox cause the PC to reboot.
I don't normally get any error messages.

Yes, although I have had problems in the past copying CD's, although I have always managed it in the end.
What I am going to try next is copy the CD to the hard disk as WAV file and then encode those files to MP3. This will hopefully help me narrow down the fault to the CD player or someother software/hardware that stops the encoding process.

It sounds like it could be some sort of hardware or driver clash. Is the CD Drive IDE or SCSI ? Do you have lots of adapter cards in the PC ?

I was chatting to someone today, who had read a review of the RioReceiver in PCxxxxx magazine. I was going to take a look in WHSmiths to see if I could find the review. All they told me was that it sounded a great idea, however at the £299 price quoted they would give it a miss. Sounds like the pair of Dell ones I picked up on that business trip were a bargin - $149 each

Good find Hugo, am sure Paul will be interested to see what happens. Shame that the $150 I paid ends up being £225 when the product makes it to the UK.

Well, $150 was a special offer - £225 (when you take off the VAT) turns out to be about $30 less than the RRP in the states.

Answer from PCUPGRADER:

"Dear Paul,

Thankyou for your recent enquiry. We don't have stock of these but SonicBlue do so delivery would be 3-4 working days.

"

So they CAN get them!!!!

Heh, that's really bad timing, since I got antsy and have managed to source some from the US for $198 each.

They should arrive in the next week or so.

Just for the record, I think that that is a spot on price, probably less than I would actually pay.

Yes they are UK distributors, though I'm not sure they've actually got any. They hadn't heard of the EOL announcement when I spoke to them a last weekend either. However they are expecting delivery of the Rio Recievers at the begining of this week. I'll let you know if the 2 I've ordered turn up...

2 RioCar or 2 RioReceiver?

I hate to be a naysayer, but my Receiver (which is now installed) worked out at 55% of the UK price on pcupgraders.

I'll be interested if they can actually get any though - I may need some more!

Cheers,

Paul

Good find, and at that price well worth picking up a couple. Wonder if they are the Rio of Dell models though.

Also noticed the RioCar is way cheaper at Insight than the Empeg store - have posted to Empeg BBS

I ordered one from Insight several weeks back, but they seem to be having problems with their suppliers. First they estimated the 26th, then the 28th followed by the 30th. And now they've given up predicting when they might arrive.

DCS also advertises them for a similar UK price: http://www.dcsonline.co.uk/shop.asp?category=198. They don't have any stock either though (their suppliers are saying 10/12/01).

Has anyone else tried DCS or any other UK retailers? I've placed an order with DCS and will let everyone know how it goes.

Today they are predicting the 15th December, to which our response was "yeah right". I get the feeling either Sonic Blue or Digital River are cocking it up (given that all the UK suppliers seem to be in the same boat).

Who do I talk to at Sonic Blue to convince them to start shipping to their UK suppliers again ?

Here is an email response that I had from Nick Caddick the SonicBlue Marketing Director, regards the Rio Receiver in the UK:

"Hi Paul

My sincere apologies for not getting back to you sooner but there has been
huge debate about getting the Receivers into the UK. Just to update you, we
have now shipped a number of units into the UK, which are US specified. (All
that means is they have a different power cable and they are in US
packaging). We are selling the products here in small 'trial' numbers
directly.

Current price is 199 BPS.

Once again thanks for your interest in Rio products and if you need any
further information please feel free to contact me.... I will endeavour to
respond a hell of a lot quicker!

Kind regards

Nick Caddick
Marketing Director Europe
SONICblue Inc"

He's since told me that they are still US spec, but have UK power cables.

I imagine that they are now also available from the UK e-store and should be available right now.

Paul.

There is no real difference between UK/US spec, except for the bundled power cables. The one on my desk at home, which I bought in the US has a CE mark on it, and they've all got auto-ranging power supplies.

There might be a difference in whether the HPNA card is included or something.

Just received this email from Insight:

"RIO RECEIVER/HOME DIGITAL AUDIO RECEIVER -MP3+WMA PLAYER"
The ETA for this product has now changed to 03/01/02

This is beyond a joke....

If I could source one from elsewhere at a reasonable price I would...

Any thoughts?

I friend and I have now managed to source a couple direct from SonicBlue in the US, we are using another friend to ship them over to the UK. It seems this is the only way to buy them outside of the US.

Worryingly, our friend in the US didn't open the box before shipping it to us. What do you think the chances are that it really was two Rio Receivers and not some other random Rio product ?

Beyond a joke is an understatement. I know this isn't down to the empeg guys directly, but this is a stark contrast to the customer service/support that I've received for my empeg unit.
I'm contemplating canceling my order in the hope that theres something better in the pipeline that Diamond may actually want to sell to their customers.

Taking the piss is more appropriate.

I'll wager Insight know this product might be canned but keep pushing the date out to stop customers cancelling orders.

My patience is wearing very thin.

Is there any way to order the Dell unit?

Dell stopped selling the Receiver a while ago, they are now just giving their remaining stock away with certain systems. That was only ever in the US though anyway, Dell UK have never (to my knowledge) sold them.

I hate to worry you, but DigitalRiver (who run the eStore for SB) are ruddy awful at sending anything, let alone the correct stuff. Just look at the posts on the empeg board for a sample.

Here's hoping that you got the right stuff!

You might even get some free stuff!

Nope. In actual fact after it was pointed out that Insight could supply them for £150 I cancelled the order with PCupgrader and ordered them fromm insight. Insight are still very kindly sending me weekly updates on the their revised expected delivery dates. It's now been weeks, no sorry, months. I'm sure it took Hugo et al less time to develop than this. I fail to understand how companies like this stay in business.

I was surprised that certain companies are offering the Receiver in the UK - I had no idea it had been launched here. I'm not aware that any support infrastructure was in place.

Perhaps I'll ask the UK marketing manager for his perspective on this.

You can't buy the Rio Receiver via the UK e-store at the moment.

In fact the SonicBlue UK e-store appears to have disappeared completely. There used to be a Union Flag on the http://store.sonicblue.com/ site that took you to the UK store (which only sold the personal portable Rio devices). Now that link to the UK site has gone away.

For a moment I thought that it meant that sanity had visited the SonicBlue sales arm and that the US store was now international. But no such luck, the US store still only ships to Canada and the US.

So, where did the UK e-store go ? Presumably it means one of three things:

  • someone has cocked up and removed the link to the UK site without meaning to
  • SonicBlue have given up on selling to the UK
  • the US e-store is preparing to go international

If you contact Nick at Rio apparently he can send them out to you, but cost £25 more than Insight. I'm trying to buy 4, so thats an extra £100.

You'll never guess...

9/11/01 has changed to the 15/01/01.

Anybody have a contact of Rio in the UK that I can email and ask the obvious questions?
