I wanted to make sure everyone knew how hard Tom worked on doing this merge. He had to write his own merge script (several hundred lines of code) in his spare time over the last few months. A lot of time and thought was put into the process. Many practice runs were done on a dummy copy of the BBS. Then, when the time came to actually run it for real, all sorts of unexpected things went wrong including a problem where he lost connectivity to the BBS right in the middle of the process.

I know that everyone (myself included) has all sorts of little gripes about the changes. But I wanted to say publicly that I think the new, integrated BBS is very cool, and that I think Tom is a class act and is totally, utterly cool for putting this kind of time into it. I'm sure that I speak for everyone here when I say that.

Tom, you da man.

Yeah, what he said.

Tom, if you want a 32MB upgrade done, I'm willing to donate some of my time and skills in appreciation, and I'm sure that Paul won't mind me donating 2 of his chips to the cause.

Yeah, excellent work, Tom. I think the real proof of how great a job you did is the fact that all we can complain about now is little cosmetic fixes. I wish database merges at my company went this smoothly.

(And the best part of it all for me is I can finally change my username, which I've wanted to do for years.)

And yet you still IRC with that lame-o handle.

(Argh. Too much cruft on the post page. Over 1000 pixels on my new laptop and I still can't see the submit button without scrolling.)

Negative, ditched that too.

BTW, I think I found a BBS bug. After changing my username, I still have to login with my old one. The new one seems to be valid for display purposes, but not logging in.

That great....um, who the hell are you again?

And yeah Tom, this went really well, from my standpoint at least.

Didn't you changed your "Display Name". In "My home/Preferences", my "Login name" is static text and I can't change it. "Display name" is in a textbox...

Something has to be static. Remember that most boards have a large number of trolls that would _love_ to be able to change every bit of identifiable information whilst keeping their post count. Come to think of it, we used to have one ourselves.

Yep, that must be the deal.

Yeah. In most user databases that "something" that's static is a meaningless autonumber field used as the primary key for the user record. Seems silly to have the login ID and displayed user ID be different entities, but it's no biggie.

You know, I've a feeling that we're going to have problems remembering who is who around here.

Without checking out the profile (which fortunately gives a big clue) who knows who "L0ser" is?

I think that display name changes should require a "formerly known as" notice for 60 days, or maintain a display name history trail in the profile.

I agree, thanks Tom for all you hard work.

Gracias..

Now I have to get used to not going to the Central/Receiver board as a daily routine after visiting the empeg board... I guess I have to start visiting the riovolution board more often to dig for good info amongst the troll posts...

Agreed. I know Tom worked on this for a long time, and I appreciate it. I can't get around to working on my own tiny website most of the time. To do all this for us is commendable. Great job.

Avatars don't help? I tend to be more a visual learner so I don't have problems with the name changes for people who have avatars (well, unique ones, and ones that don't change randomly.)

Or do you browse without avatars?

Hey, ya! This is totally cool!

Tom, Tom, he's the man! If ever I could help him score some totally over-the-top bud or something, he need only say the word!

Ahh that ole visual learner...

The last place I worked at had a product that was release for years before they realized that on the back of the product said "visual leaner".

Hear is an example of what it said:

Learning Styles
* Visual Leaner - If you are a visual leaner then pictures, charts, and graphics make it easier for you to learn and help you retain information. Our CD-ROM programs have hundreds of colored graphics, charts, and pictures that will help to enhance your learning.

* Auditory Learner - Auditory learners listen for voice fluctuations and emphasis on key words. Our CD-ROM incorporates live audio lectures into its program and our audio tapes are most definitely advantageous to any auditory learner.

* Tactile Learner - Tactile learners tend to retain information better by writing or circling key words. They like to underline and highlight in printed material. Our workbook format has been designed with the tactile learner in mind, as there is ample space for marginal notes. Our CD-ROM allows you to print the text so someone may highlight and make notes directly in the text as well.

Sometimes I need crutches for my eye too...

Well, dang, I didn't realize that changing my display name to "FukinJim" would require admin approval! It was only a temporary joke! Don't do it! Aaaaaargh!

Ah, that's OK. A certain number of our product screens at one time had the tagline "The power of leaning at work". At least one of those typos was mine...

Don't think it ever ended up on printed packaging though.

Hmmmm.... On a side note, no wonder the HP/Compaq online asset merger went as smoothly as it did. Way to go! It was all just practice for the great BBS migration/merger.

Reminds me of a "motivational" sign I spotted in a Carl's Jr. a few weeks back:

"If you have time to lean, you have time to clean!"

Anyway, thanks Tom for the effort you've put into the transition.

It's great to see something that all fits together and works, when I know that I wouldn't know where to start.
