Soooo.... it's been about 3 weeks since the meet. Any chance on v3a8 being released to the rest of us plebs? I think it was mentioned that the empeg guys would let it go for a few weeks to see how good it was. I think the main concern was any show stopping bugs but I don't believe there are any big ones. Even most of the big ones have already been worked around by the good Mr Lord. Don't want to be pushy but .... uhm ... well ... I want it

We're a bit too busy with new products to think about releasing a car player alpha right now. Anyone with the CD is welcome to share that with friends/colleagues but please don't post it online. We will make a more official release when we have time to review lessons learned from the Amersfoort release.

The RatShack 270-101 seems to be the right sort of thing and has only two leads, so maybe that'll work. I'll drop by the RS after work and pick one up.

I have this one sitting here in front of me. It is made to go on a PCB, but I'm sure it can be worked around. I need to solder some wires to it and try it out.

Why is Omni directional better in this usage? I sort of assumed the mic was placed in front of each speaker while some sort of calibration took place.

No, the mic is placed in a position that is close to where you would listen to the music (ie about your head location) and it sets a single global EQ setting based on that one sample.
If you placed the mic near a speaker, you would only get a nice EQ for that speaker, not for all the other speakers and not taking into account phase, reflections, and the upholstery soaking up frequencies.
If the mic is not omnidirectional, then it's almost as bad as sticking the mic in front of a speaker, i.e., it's not behaving like your ears behave and won't give as good of an approximation of the overall sound of the car's interior.

I wasnt really wanting to get into the alpha software but since it has the autoEQ I want to try it out. Would someone be so kind and share with me too? Also if it doesnt work out well for me can i easily go back to v2? Do I loose all the music on my players when changing versions? Thanks!

No, but your database rebuilds will get hosed and you might have to do this and/or this. I usually end up having to do both after bouncing back and forth between versions.
Also, this last time I bounced back and forth between 2.0 and 3.0 a couple of times, I got some severe playlist corruption, where playlists that were originally three levels down in the tree inexplicably appeared in the root. I hadn't gotten around to reporting that one yet because I'd been doing so much back-and-forth and synching with different emplode versions that I was afraid it was something I'd caused to happen myself. Anyway, I had to delete all my playlists and restore from a backup using riobackup.jar.

Not to put the empeg guys down, but a8 is really only useful if you have more than 16MB of memory. The auto eq whilst interesting, isn't really functional yet.

Typical. I've been away for a couple of months, I decide to investigate the use of Wendy Flags (sick of my gf moaning about some of my music) and what do I find? A newer version of emphatic and the lrcdb is finally up and running. So, I'm looking for the latest version of 3. Seems that there is too much weird behaviour before a8 and it's so tantalisingly close. Anyone with a CD wanna burn me a copy and send it? Do ya, huh? Do ya?
I can then give the animated logo graphic that SkunkNumber did for me a go as I tried a few times on v2 and gave up.

V3 does not have any different behavior with regard to the animated logos. In fact, if you weren't able to get an animated logo working with V2, then V3 will just make things worse because it is alpha and is less stable than V2.
What you need, most likely, is merely the latest version of Jemplode; he recently fixed some bugs with animated logo handling. You need the latest Hijack, too, of course. Remember that instructions on how to install an animated logo are here. Just use Jemplode to open up the GIF file that Skunk made for you, and send it to the player.

While I am quite interested in the auto eq feature I was also hoping for some bug fixes. I've been running a7 for quite a while now and I'd love some stability improvements. Of course, I don't know if a8 actually has any stability improvements since I haven't seen a changelog. Nevertheless, I am already running an alpha version and a bigger number has to be better right So, if anybody feels like sharing please send me a PM.

There's no reason that immediately occurs to me that would prevent you from running 3.0a8 to generate AutoEQ, make sure you save the EQ, then revert to 2.0. Is there?

Hasn't anybody from this side of the pond offered to wander into Maplins and bulk-buy some of the mics the empeg guys used and ship them over?
I'm quite happy to do it if there's someone prepared to handle the US side of things.

Likewise, although AutoEQ would be cool to play with. I'm specifically looking for these issues getting fixed.
Playlist saving seemed to get broken between 3.00a3 and 3.00a5 from my testing although not many others experience the same issues.
Random marking is also really getting to annoy me because I do this.

I've avoided JEmplode as my home PC is a bit clunky and I didn't want the pain of installing JDK. I've tried uploading animated logo's using Logo Editor.
You're saying I may as well stick with v2.0 until the Beta comes out. I did try one of the early v3.0 alphas and liked some of the new options but reverted back due to emphatic not working.

I was getting random crashes with a7 but switching off the random visuals seems to have sorted it out. I think the position saving on power down is sorted too. Other than that, I wouldn't say i'd had that many problems with a7 in the first place.

Merriam-Webster can eat it.
Check any portable audio device, camcorder or mixer board. They all have "Mic In" or "Mic 1", "Mic 2", etc.

Yes, they do. They are also liable to say things like "Inp", "Eff", "Bal", "Para", "Ch", etc. However, I was not using an abbreviation. I was using another word that means "microphone".
Also, I agree with this guy about mike/mic usage, not that he's any particular authority on English usage, other than having a minor book published about it.

I agree with him (and you now that I've read that), but I'd classify it under industry jargon rather than a proper English word. But I guess its common usage is reason enough to remind people of its "technician" roots.

So after all that (including the correct form when abbreviating microphone) is anyone willing to share 3a8?
I'd be interested to know what the empeg guys "learnt" this time around about releasing the alpha.
