This may be a silly question: do you know if it works on the HD Tivo? This is pretty exciting though. Gotta love a big "up yours" to DirecTV.

I heard that with 4.x hack, you don't get one of the DirecTV satellites... maybe it's just used for some locals?

During the guided setup I was able to select the the 3-satellite dish. I don't think I get any of the channels on the 3rd position (110 degree), so I can't test that. But, during guided setup I was able to measure signal from it.
I am able to view the NASA channel which is on the 2nd position (119 degree), so that one is deinitely working (as is 101 of course).

I just performed this procedure on my housemate's DVR40. I was able to stream a program recorded on my Series2 and watch it on his. That was dope.

Did you buy the image CDs? I have two Hughes HDVR2's that I'm thinking of doing this with.

I downloaded the Torrent. No problem with it and the image from PTVupgrade aparently has custom splash screens with their logo. All splash screens on the torrent image work fine (no glitching so far) and the one you see when acquiring satellites after a reboot even has the DirecTV logo.

So what are the advantages of running v4 (over a sleeper'd v3) on a DTivo? I've never used a regular tivo with the version 4 software so I guess I don't know what I am missing.

Couple more questions:
After you set it up, are the recordings unscrambled and can they be extracted? Or are they scrambled? Did you do this with the stock drives? Can I use the stock 40 and an additional larger drive, and how do I get that larger drive working with this version?
Okay, I know, I need to go look all this up. =]

I haven't gotten into extraction yet on series2. I have just been updating all my boxes and also bought another last night to replace a series1. I think the encryption is disabled by using this method. However, if it isn't it's my understanding that disabling encryption is as easy as running a script. I think it's called noscramble2.
In all cases, I am using drives other than the drive that shipped with the tivo. I am just paranoid and want to be able to drop-in a clean install if needed. One of the upgrades was done by overwriting a drive that I had previously installed to get more space. The image I use it for a 40GB tivo, so your drive has to be at least that big. If it's bigger, the image will automatically expand.
To do a two-drive system I would run the procedure on the A drive, get that all settled, then follow Hinsdale's how-to on adding a B drive.

v4 has "folders" for sorting your Now Playing lists. Also, I think that the "SORT" feature is always on instead of being a secret thing (while viewing the Now Playing list, press Slow, 0, Record then Thumbs up.) Finally, you get the Home Media Option so you can stream shows from one Tivo to another and also view images or listen to mp3s stored on a PC. Keep that phone line unplugged.

Yeah, I realized that and that one feature was enough to make me upgrade I'm running 4 as of about 10 minutes ago. The upgrade went smoothly following those directions.
Quote: Keep that phone line unplugged.
This brings up an interesting question. Does PPV work without the phone line? With the v3 software PPV required the phone line even if you had hacked in network support. That guide and a quick search at dealdatabase (man there are some cranky people over there) doesn't mention how it works with version 4.
I'm also wondering if it will really take 24 hours to get local channels back, there was stuff on I wanted to watch tonight I guess I need a backup dtivo.

Thanks Rob, I'm admittedly a jackass. Once I looked at all my old Tivo links it started coming back to me, especially the Hindsdale guide. Tomorrow I'll probably just make a backup of my 160GB and 40GB drive that are in there now onto a PC, then have a go at the v4 install. I'll just save the backups so I can re-install on the drives if it goes awry. I can't afford new drives right now as much as i'd rather just start on a freshy and keep the existing for easy drop in backups. It'll suck to lose all those saved movies though... 40 of them at last count!

You can get PPV, but you would have to order through directv.com or call-in.

So far so good. Clearing and deleting everything... does this really take an hour!? I can't wait that long. Heheh. Can't wait to get a bash prompt on my Tivo. Sweet sweet nerdy goodness.
EDIT: Hrmm... after the clear and delete it rebooted and is making go through the guided setup again... that's not in the instructions. I hate when things happen that aren't in the guides. haha. I guess I'll reboot again and see what happens...
Okay, i've got bash. Anyone know why everytime I type a letter it is doubled on the console? For instance, if I type "mount" i get:
bash-2.02# mmoouunntt
EDIT 2: Got it. Use the -K flag when telnetting. I'm in!

Keep us up-to-date! I'm seriously considering doing this but have to decide if I want to get new drives or not... I have one untouched DTivo that I'll try first. But on my other DTivo, it has a 120gb 2nd drive. I paid weakknees.com for it already formatted but it looks like I'll have to wipe that drive and start from scratch? Or can I get 4.0 on the "main" drive and pop the 120 back in? Looks like I have more reading to do!

Actually, after waiting an hour or two with no luck I found a workaround. If anyone else does this and wants locals back quickly search dealdatabases' tivo forum for midupdate.tcl. Once I set the mid and rebooted I had locals instantly and guide data for them within a few minutes.

What does -K do in your telnet? I've got the same issue, but K is a kerberos flag in OS X's telnet which I'm guessing isn't what I'd need. `stty -echo` almost works, but causes other strangeness.

I had to reboot a couple times more than I was supposed to have to. And, shortly after getting it all setup on the network, I got a weird error message:
myworld[226]: hpk brcm: failed to convert BES to PES header. Assuming buffer overrun. this is the only thread I can find on it so far... I'll have to look into it more later. The HDVR2 rebooted itself shortly after that. And all was well. I'll have to research this myworld stuff... I don't even know what the "Myworld mempool unused K = 2502" message that is on my menu screens means.
I installed TivoWebPlus, which i'm really disappointed with. It was probably the main reason i'd wanted to upgrade, but the layout and interface is pretty weak. I'll have to see If I just don't have the right modules or something, but it leaves a lot to be desired.
I got TivoToGo working and can listen to music and check out photos off of my PC. Pretty good, but no where near as nice as MS Media Center.
The only issue I'm having as of now is sound glitching. Every once and a while the menu beeps will start to become scratchy and distorted, until it's an awful screeching clicky sound. When that occurs it also has a sound glitch when fast forwarding or rewinding. Once I put it into standby and come out of it the problem is gone though. Annoying.
Quote: What does -K do in your telnet?
I have no idea. I found it on a forum post by one of the heavy hitters, tried it and it worked. According to the man page:
-K Specifies no automatic login to the remote system.
I dunno why that would prevent double characters or why it was happening in the first place. But it works. telnet -K xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

I had a similar problem, so I switched to using VanDyke's SecureCRT (which I use for SSH). It worked great.

Okay, I've got TivoWebPlus 1.1 up and running and I'm now starting to LOVE it. It's so sweet to just quickly schedule or search for a show without having to fire up the TV. Definitely recommend it if you haven't installed it yet. I think i'm getting the hang of all the different hack methods and where they all go.
I've successfully pulled one show off but I'm not quite to the point of getting it onto a DVD with OSX. It's way easier on a PC from what I read.
Thanks Rob for posting that guide link!
If anyone has any questions about any of it or what it enables let me know, I think i've got a grasp of it now.

So, was the encryption already hacked-out? I would know myself by now, but I'm dog/house sitting this week while my parents are in FL.

Which guide did you use for TivoWeb?
Without getting into the specifics (that are already in the guide) what was the basic order of your hack process? Did you just do 4.x and TivoWeb? Or were there others?

Installing tivoweb is done by running a script. Aside from unpacking the archive, it pretty-much installs itself. Here's the readme http://tivo.fp2000.org/twp/README

Quote: So, was the encryption already hacked-out?
Yes, read through this thread to see all that the superpatch (which is part of the 4.x+ RID Installation Guide Rob linked to) does. Here's the main thrust of it:
This script will enable the HMO (Home Media Option) which enables Music and Photos, enables Multiroom Viewing (MRV), decrypts all HMO/MRV network traffic, disables the daily nag screen when your box hasn't connected to the service for more than 30 days, sets your tivo to record all future shows unscrambled using NoCSO, and other various stuff, including applying the 30-second skip, NoPPV(record scheduled), Parental Controls (Off after reboot) and VWait Speedup(cpu utilization reduction) patches to all known 4.x tivoapps.
Quote: Without getting into the specifics (that are already in the guide) what was the basic order of your hack process? Did you just do 4.x and TivoWeb? Or were there others?
Here's the shortlist of what I did:
NOTE: this is all on a Hughes HDVR2 DirecTivo.
1. Used part of the Hinsdale Guide to backup my already expanded two drive DTivo (stock 40GB A drive + upgraded 160GB B drive) to one backup file (no shows).
2. Followed the 4.x+ RID Installation Guide, which installs the 4.0.1b system, LBA48 Kernal (for large drive support) and tons of other patches you'd wanna install anyway. I did this on my 160 GB drive, thus making it the A drive since the 4.0.1b image wouldn't expand fully on the 40GB drive. I put the 40 GB drive aside.
3. added crond as outlined in this post to run the fakecall script to avoid the nag screen you get if your Tivo doesn't dial out ever so often.
4. Then I enabled the backdoors stuff (lets you see drive space used etc) like so:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /
cd /hacks
cp /tvbin/tivoapp tivoapp
echo -ne "\x24\x05\x00\x01" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=5401464
cp /tvbin/tivoapp tivoapp.bak
mv tivoapp /tvbin/tivoapp
mount -o remount,ro /
5. Installed TivoWebPlus 1.1 (i did 1.0 first on accident because I didn't know 1.1 existed, which fixes plenty of bugs) as is outlined in the readme that comes with it. Very simple install. There are modules that add features to it that are just .tcl scripts placed in the modules directory under TWP's install dir.
6. I also futzed around with MFS_FTP, which is an extraction method that basically runs an FTP server, as outlined at the top of this thread. I've got it working but apparently there are other methods... it's seems like a divided camp on which is better. I think Tytool is the other method. There may be others.
7. Used the Hinsdale guide again and made a new backup of all the stuff I'd done thus far. So now I have a backup of the original unhacked setup and another of the hacked setup. Then I used step 10 of the guide to add the 40 GB drive as the B drive. All worked well and i'm at 200 hrs.
Here are some helpful things to know if you use this hack method:
* After you get a prompt, to make changes to files and upload you need to mount root RW (just like the good ol' empeg!). Here are the mount unmount commands:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /
mount -o remount,ro /
* All startup commands go in the rc.sysinit.author file which is in /etc/rc.d/
* With this setup, you can put all your hacks in the /hacks/ dir. The old method seems to be to put everything in /var/hack.
If I think of anything else I'll add it to the end.

Apparently they don't like the package manager style of install over there, so the TWP 1.1 is a typical "unarchive to install" type deal. I'd recommend 1.1 over 1.0 for this install. I had a number of problems with 1.0 that 1.1 fixed.
