I used to get the hard drive not detected message intermittently and reseating the unit would resolve the issue. I reseated the IDE cable and it fixed the problem for a while, but then it returned intermittently and finally permanently. The drive in the system made a rattling noise when moved around so I bought a replacement drive, same result. I bought a replacement cable from Eutronix, same again. Tested the contacts from the MB to the pins, seems good, tested the cable, all leads work. Both drives pass diagnostics (connected to a desktop system with an adapter) and make spin-up noises in the Rio Empeg unit when it's powered on. I can provide more details or pictures if needed. I am not an electrician but I do have access to a DMM if you have any TS steps requiring one. Thank you for any assistance you are able to provide here; the idea of replacing the unit with a non Empeg sickens me!

This is normal. Most of them rattle. It's how they're designed.

Not a bad cable which rules that out.

The IDE header on the motherboard can have hairline cracks which you can't see and may test okay until there is vibration or movement.

Post a boot log? The instructions are in the FAQ which is linked at the top of this page.

Bad solder job on the IDE header -- needs to be resoldered by somebody compentent at such repairs.

Very common problem. Very fixable.

Cheers

Anyone here do this kind of work? My skills with soldering irons is somewhat... rough. I'm not looking for a freebie, just wondering if I can get someone here who is used to working on Empegs to fix it rather than take it down to the local radio repairman. Not to say the local guy isn't good at his job, I'd just rather have someone Empeg experienced do it.
