Okay, this one is strange. I received an email the other day, like so many emails I get: Quote: D@D Media Italia wrote:

It really looks legit, and really sounds like the beginnings of a scam of some kind. I asked for more info (via email), and their reply was this:
Quote:
Hello, We're developing a multithread c/c++ program focused on connecting to a list of internet websites, exctracting various informations about multimedia files (with different codec) and save all the retrieved informations to a db.
For privacy and security reason we cannot give you more details here and the project has to be developed onsite; if you're interested and you can give us your phone number, we can contact you to discuss further the details.
D@D Media Italia www.ddmedia.net +39 0362 327 922
I wonder what the heck they're doing emailing me about this, rather than somebody closer to home for them.
Scam? How?

Probly this one: 'We sent you the check for your expenses, but we accidentily sent to much. If you receive the check, please sent the rest back to us. (and keep a bit for the trouble)' a bit like the 'nigerian scam'

Hmmm.... the first email does sound dodgy, it reads as if replying "yes" would result in a cheque for the expenses immediately being sent out and (as mentioned) followed by a request for the difference to be wired back.
An easy answer is if you want a trip to Italy then reply yes! You are already suspicious of a scam so you are one-up on any possible scammer.

If you fancy a trip to Italy, ask them for prepaid airplane ticket(s).

The company does seem legit. Been around a while, seems to have some products and decent professional appearance. I have a pretty good BS detector (no really, I do), and it isn't going off.

But how are you sure the email is really from that company?

Probably subcontracted by the RIAA to scrape websites for "illegitimate" content, record where it is, then pass a list of infringers to the legal department for further action.

Well, yes.. I'd kind of assumed that from the scant description!

Ah of course, does make sense now. I guess that they wouldn't advertise such work on the open market to avoid attracting the wrong sort of applicant...
The money is probably good then, I would jump at a chance of a nice short-ish working holiday to Italy!
