I recently wanted to upgrade my Mk2a (running 2.00 final) by adding a 100 GB drive. I started by manually partitioning and formatting the new drive as per Roger's instructions. Then I manually copied over the fids from both of my existing drives (40 GB and 10 GB) and performed a manual fsck and database rebuild. No problems.

The next thing I did was to add a bunch of tracks using jemplode 70 under Linux. The tracks seemed to transfer, but jemplode gave an error after the tracks were transfered and right when it was trying to write the database. I am at about 14,000 tracks which, I am assuming translates to more than 28,000 fids.

Now when I try to manually build the database, with swap enabled, I get a "no_memory error" Hijack error. I am currently running Hijack 440 modded for ext3. The serial connection shows the following error:
VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for player..."

Any suggestions? Am I running into limitations of having only 16 MB of RAM? Would increasing my RAM help? If so, which of the two methods is recommended (i.e. piggyback vs. pca's memory board)?

Do you reservecache set in your config.ini? If not try adding it with a smallish value (try 10 or 20). I'm guessing it is the OS not the player software running out of memory since the ext3 support takes a little more memory than a stock config.

Yeah, 14,000 tracks is around where the database rebuilds start to get troublesome because of lack of RAM.

Are there any workarounds or is there anything I should be doing to alleviate problems?

OK, I am trying to edit my config.ini file, but cannot ftp into my empeg. In fact I am unable to ping my empeg's IP address, but if I connect another drive instead (40 GB w/ 2.00 and no fids), I am able to ping and ftp. If I connect my 100 GB drive as the second drive, 40 GB as first drive, again I am unable to ping. What is going on?

Your config.ini is stored on drive0. Since you just swapped drives you probably need to reset your IP address settings over serial or USB first (or put your empeg on a network with a DHCP server).

Well, to be honest, short of a memory expansion - there's not much else you can do. Tony is not actually being sarcastic (much).

Well, the odd thing is that I was able to access this drive through the network before, but now I can't. If you read above, I can connect to the empeg through the network (w/ DHCP server) when another drive is drive 0, but when I add this new drive as drive 1, I can no longer access it! It doesn't make sense.

Unless somehow the player isn't recognizing both drives, and is using drive 1 as its primary disk.

In any case, there is something you might be able to do to help the database. I'm not certain if this will really work, but my fuzzy memory seems to tell me it might.

If your MP3s all have comments in their tags, pruning the comments out of each and every tag might squeak it under the RAM ceiling enough to allow a database rebuild.

Don't take offense, but are you sure about which drive is getting mounted where? It sure sounds like your new drive is coming up as master (drive0) and the old drive as slave (drive1). I'd triple check the jumpers and watch the boot output over serial to be sure.

Regarding jumpers, remember that you have to set them for the empeg HDs. It doesn't work with cable select. Drive position on the cable doesn't matter.
