Could this be one gained from dubious sources? No mention of the sled or anything else. In fact the only info is a C&P of a very old news story about Rio releasing them in the US.

Someone that seems to have no idea what it is, and is also selling a bunch of other car stereo stuff around the same time... Did anyone in Las Vegas have a Kenwood KAC-728S 600 Watt Amplifier stolen recently??? (viewing recent feedback from other auctions the seller has done)

It might be legit. But, well, it is certainly not a bargain price, and the seller does not seem to know much about it...

Have the seller give you the unit's serial number. It'll be in the "About" menu on the player. His photo shows the player working, so he should be able to call up that menu.

Then post the serial number here and search the BBS to see if anyone has reported that number stolen.

In the light of recent experiences, I am following the rule "If in serious doubt... its hot" on eBay. Not one to tone it down, but there are simply too many assholes out there.

If I buy something, I have to have absolute confidence it is 100% legit else there is no way I'm going anywhere near.

Well no reply yet saying he has found the sled.... I have asked him for the serial number though...

And without using highly developed googling skills, I have found the article he got all his "information" from:

cnet RioCar article - dated 26 Feb 2001

A search of the archives finds this unit being sold back in 2002 by "Bryce":

I sent Bryce an e-mail about this via his webpage (still active):

Quote:
Hi Bryce, I'm cushman on the Empeg BBS, just a concerned user who noticed a thread about an Empeg unit you sold. The unit you sold has popped up on eBay with a shady looking description, and members on the BBS are thinking it might be stolen. Maybe you could contact the person you sold it to to see if they have had their unit stolen.

With the mail I sent links to this thread and the eBay auction. Hopefully this will get a clear answer.

Bryce here, that's my name, no need to put it in quotes. Ultimately I put that one on eBay, I've forwarded Mark's e-mail with the links to the original buyer.

Thanks for keeping a good eye furtive. Also thank Bryce for notifying me. I was the next owner after Bryce of this Empeg, and it was stolen from my 93 honda civic approximately 6 moths ago. The car was parked in a parking garage at a casino when the theft occured. It has been a real drag having no mp3s for 6 months, lol. He doesnt have the sled because he never took it. He didnt take the remote either. Im not surprised that he doesnt know anything about the player either. I sold the sled on ebay a few months ago becuase I thought the player was gone for good. I sold my remote as well. I still have the ac adapter though, and an extra sled so I should be good to go. I will be contacting the Las Vegas Metro PD today to inform them of the guy on ebay and his stolen wares. If anyone can provide any more information please email me at [email protected]. My ebay usernames have been cyberbator and rion3030. Thanks again to this great empeg community for your help.

Greetings!

If possible, please keep us informed of the outcome of your case. Many people here have also been theft victims, and it is nice to hear that someone might get their player back. If you do, and are still interested in using the empeg, post - I am sure that someone has a spare sled laying around.

Heres an update. I have filed a police report and taken my security report from the casino along with other documents to the lvpd. I am not sure as to how fast they will respond so I may be inclined to win the auction and stall the guy for awhile. I want to impress upon him that payment will be arriving and hopefully waste a week or two before he can try and sell it again. I will let everyone know the ultimate outcome and provide relevant information whenever possible.

Tyrese3000, and I will win this auction lol. I noticed a rockford amp so ill be winning that one too. It is probably stolen just like the empeg. Im assuming the more evidence that is still on hand the more of a connection the detective may be able to draw between the goods and their source.

You might want to call the Police and find out who this is assigned to and bug them every day. Give them some squeaky wheel action.

It might be better to get a friend in another state to win the auction so you can get the FBI involved. Federal crimes are more fun.

Pick it up in person with a baseball bat.

Is this the point where we hide the thread so the crook doesn't get smart and find it? Now that it has his eBay name in the text, and all.

/me always spoils the fun.

Lol. Since I already have the police involved I dont think that would be such a good idea, but It would be very tempting tho
. I will bug them every day and see what the status is and such tho. Im not too worried about the crook finding this thread. Just look at his description of the empeg on ebay. Plus hes already listed and sold it and most likely wont do any more research. I just need to stall him for at least the 10 business days so that he cant sell it to anyone else. This would be until 11-18. I think he wants paypal only so I requested his contact information and am supposedly sending a money order, which will subsequently become lost in the mail, after which another one will need to be issued etc.

Actually, I am tempted to recommend that you pay him for the player. Use a service like BidPay to generate the money order. This way, you get Visa and Western Union on his case as well. Also, by accepting the money for the player, the seller (thief?) will have officially sold stolen goods. Technically, because money has not changed hands yet, he / his lawyers might argue that it was not a sale. One less loophole...

As long as you don't get done for knowingly buying stolen goods... what we need is a lawyer in the house.

Too many jurisdictions to deal with. But, perhaps the LVPD can provide a little help here. When checking on the status, ask them if you should pay and get their opinion.

I know from studying the laws a little in the past that the money doesnt have to exchange hands in order for one to prove the intent to sell stolen goods. I believe all that is needed is one party to announce their intention to sell, and the other to announce their intention to buy. Often sting operations will record these types of conversations with a wire, but their usability in court is questionable due to the fact that in most states both parties must be aware of the recording or have an audible beep every so many seconds. To my knowledge Nevada is oddly enough a "one party state" so that only one party need be aware of a recording to have the information admissable. You are right that getting more parties involved might increase the collective interest in seeing this to its conclusion. However, this is an odd position for me because I am knowingly involving others in purchasing goods that are stolen. Oddly enough I am buying my own stolen stuff hehe. I think I will just ride it out for a bit and see what the good old gumshoe can do or recommends.

Furtive, pgrzelak, tfabris, cushman, and Bryce:

Can all of you guys contact me by email? Also if someone reads this post and you know their email can you email them and tell them to email me? My email is
[email protected]. I was contacted by the detective
and he is wondering if some of you guys can call him and
make a statement so he can have something to goto the judge with.
Im guessing if they get enough info then they can obtain a warrant.
When you email me I will give you his phone # as well as mine so you can contact me with any questions. If you could do this I would really appreciate it. It will definately contribute to getting the player back.

Thanks

Have you contacted eBay about this as well? Disclaimer... I work for eBay.

You need to contact them ASAP and get them involved. We work closely with the police on weeding out stuff like this. They may be able to help you nail this guy.

You need to contact the trust and safety department.

Gary,

I have thought about this, but I decided againt it for now. I was not sure about what ebays procedures would be, and I wanted to be careful not to tip off the suspect. Can you tell me a little bit more about what Ebay might do in a situation like this? I already have this users contact information and have turned it over the the authorities
