This might be the wrong place, but I have a streaming video question.

On my machine, every type of streaming video gives me the same problem. It'll play for about 30 seconds, the video will freeze for about 2-3 seconds (while the audio continues uninterrupted), and then it'll get back to normal. The whole video will play, but it's freezing up every 20-30 seconds which is annoying to say the least. Generally I can go back to the parts I missed and it won't freeze in the same place, so I can see what I missed before.

The other thing that annoys me is that this only happens in Firefox, not IE. It happens on all types of streaming media. QT, WMV, Flash, etc.

Any ideas?

I don't have a solution for you, but as a data point: I use Firefox and don't have that particular problem.

Have you checked to make sure Firefoz, and more importantly, your player applications are updated to their latest versions? I know that a certain version of Quicktime player (a few point releases ago) had an incompatibility with Firefox that would tend to lock up and/or crash Firefox occasionally.

Okay, cheating here... this isn't necessarily a "best" video. But I threw this together from a flying session this past Sunday... thought you might enjoy. My buddy Nova and I at the coast doing a little bit of paragliding.

~5 min, MPEG4 (H.264) Quicktime.

Bicycle + Jet Engine = Worlds Fastest Bike!

236km/h! Absolutely completely mental.

World's fastest bicycle? No, it isn't.

In 1985, John Howard set the world's bicycle land speed record of 152.2 MPH (245 km/h) and he didn't use any rocket engines, either -- he pedaled the damn thing! A far more impressive achievement than strapping a rocket onto a bicycle and holding on for dear life!

Impressive! Thanks for that.

Downhill near my home I managed about 38.7 MPH which is my fastest ever. Set off the speed camera That is the fastest I've been and not far from my terminal velocity at a guess, the aerodynamics were hard to push against at that speed. I'd expect to go faster than about 45-50 MPH you really need to be behind a train or something - I like the guys rig with the 500hp car + fairing in front.

Anyhow, I'd like to see that guys gearing!

There was something in this morning's Metro about this, but I can't find it on their website today.

(Note for the non-Londoners: Metro is a free newspaper dispensed in Tube stations in the morning. It's owned by the same publishers as the Daily Mail and the Evening Standard)

Nah... it depends on the bike you have, the hill you're on, and how good a rider you are -- I hit 37MPH last night on a moderate downhill and still had some gears left. I've gone plenty faster (just barely over 50MPH) on longer downhills where I was actually trying to go fast; at the point of spinning my pedals as fast as I can with no affect on speed (I need to go out to the mountains for a proper effort... ). But that's on my road bike. My mountain bike has never achieved such speeds. (Some of the Tour de France guys have gone over 75mph on downhill sections.)

At any rate, I was under the impression that the cycling land speeds were set by towing the cyclist up to a certain speed, first, and then the cyclist pedaling up to full speed.

I've got an okay hill in my neighborhood that used to get me up to 35mph on my mountainbike. Not bad for those huge tires. I'm not in my 14-year-old fitness level anymore, though.

Going to try the hill again soon and see whether I can beat it. I've only tried once and although it is steep, it is not very long. Will see how it goes.

That cycle and roundabout trick won't happen around here simply because the city removed all such potentially dangerous gadgets some time ago.

Come to think of it, they pulled all the swings too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the original didn't have all those random images in it, did it? That makes this statement on that page all the more odd: "This is the original video of the Numa Numa dance without all the edited cuts."

This is a tangent but for my money the funniest (while sticking to NPOV facts and without ever losing its encyclopaedic tone) Wikipedia page is Heavy metal umlaut.

Runaway tire

Not horribly funny, but was passed around my office as this happened at a Rudys BBQ store down the street that we eat lunch at frequently. The hole is still there in the sign.
