My Mk2 will not boot up anymore and the only thing it does is repeat the Hi-Jack program I've installed a while back. I can access the hi-jack menu but it does nothing to the player. Just repeats. All was fine, it was working beautifully then one day...no boot. It powers up but does not respond to anything button pushes. However if I select help thru the software the player displays PLAYER LOST SETTINGS. I tried connecting it to my pc but nothing. Serial , usb, ethernet, no dice. does not respond. Can someone help?

I suspect it might be a bad track. Try doing this.

If that doesn't work, please post a boot log for further diagnosis. Thanks.

PLAYER LOST SETTINGS means that the flash memory has gotten messed up. Sometimes a bad track will cause this, as Paul suggested, or it could be more serious hardware trouble.

If you continue to have problems, post a boot log like Paul said. Instructions on how to get a boot log are here

... make sure you use the correct serial cable (null modem).

Ok thanks guys at least there is hope. I will try you're sugestion when I get a chance. I was trying to access it with the consumer software and not the developer so hopefully it works.
I'm not sure of the origin of the serial cable I have. Is there a easy way to tell which one I need? I will buy a new one.....I thought they all the same? Seems i cannot find any of my Empeg cables.....calling gf....where are my cables?....lol

I'll get that boot log asap....

Edit: Weill I just read the enclosed link. I believe I have the consumer upgrade (version 2.0 bet 13)- I know old one )and not the developer one. Since I have the consumer upgrade I cannot access the shell prompt can I? I might as well send it to Euronix for repair. Ok, so in the long run it might be better to install the developer version just in case you need to access the shell prompt and un-freeze the player so to speak.

Before you ship it anywhere, see if you can install the developer release first. v2.01 please.

Then hit Control^C on the serial port after the player starts up.

(or if it is all behaving, then just leave well enough alone).

Ok, somewhat good news. I was able to install the dev. 2.01 release with no problems. However this is what I get when I activate the hyperterminal. I also ran the diagnosis or control+t. this just repeats itself until I disconnect.

It looks like you used the select-text-and-paste function in Hyperterminal to get that boot log. This screws up the text because of a bug in hyperterminal. So the text you have pasted is garbled in spots and hard to read. Instead, click here and follow its instructions on how to get a proper boot log without the garbled stuff.

Ok, lets try this. It made a txt file. I started when I first plugged it in so you could see everything.

Okay, now hit Control^C, and wait for the command prompt to appear (5-10 seconds).

Then type this command and hit enter: player -i

(directory)----> empeg:/empeg/bin# player-i.....comes back as aborted. Other trys suggest no such command.
edit: I also tried ./player -i from the FAQ's but again aborted.

Okay. With the info thus far, I'd guess at either bad RAM (unlikely), or corrupted files on the hard disk (very likely).

The things to do next, in order (stop if one of them works):

(1) Re-install the car2-developer-v2.01-final.upgrade software package. Yes, you may have already done this. Do it again.

If that doesn't cure the problem, then you may have a bad track that is confusing the player. This is unlikely, but easier to fix than the alternatives.

(2) Hit Control^C, and type these commands at the prompts:

rw
rm /empeg/var/database*
rm /empeg/var/playlists
rm /empeg/var/tags
player -i

..Big pause here while player rebuilds databases from scratch.
..Once it finishes, hit Control^C to get a command prompt again,
so that the disk can be remarked as read-only.

ro
exit

Even if the player -i step fails, be 100% sure to issue the final ro command before powering off or rebooting.

(3) Install the Hijack kernel, and then surf to Vital Signs on the Hijack menu to see which track the player is trying to play (look for the FID info).

Then delete the file of the same name from /drive0/fids/

(4) If nothing above worked, then a full reinit of the hard drive is the next option. This means all music on the drive is lost and will have to be re-uploaded, and playlists re-created. You really don't want to do this, but at this point there's little else to try. This means installing the dreaded builder image. But before doing destroying the music collection, try and find a different notebook hard disk to use for this step. Remove the original drive, and install the new one, and then run the builder on *that* drive. Once it finishes, reinstall v2.01 software, and then reinstall Hijack.

(5) If the last step worked, then you'll need to repeat it on your original drive, and then reinstall all music and playlists. Ugh.

First thanks alot for your time and effort in helping me this up and running again. I appreciate it.
Once I get home from work I wil try it to see what happens. Just to make sure I get it right......
Get to the bash prompt:
type in rw
next go to directory- rm/empeg/var/database*
next go to directory- rm/empeg/var/playlists
next go to directory- rm/empeg/var/tags
then type in player -i .into directory rm/empeg/var/tags?
Once it finishes back to bash prompt:
type in ro .be sure to enter command BEFORE rebooting or power off.
type in exit.
Install hi-jack (newest version ok?) record track in vital signs
Once track is found then go back to bash prompt?
type in: /drive0/fids/(name of track?)..delete...how do I delete from the bash prompt?

It this doesn't work then I guess a new hard drive is in order. I will give this a try and hopefully it works. Does the vital signs in hi-jack give a log of corrupt/bad tracks? If so that is a nice feature. Alllows you to see the offending track so you can delete it before it plays again and corrupts your player. Thanks again for you're help. Can't wait to get home!!

Actually, those "rm"s are commands. It is removing the database files, in case they are corrupt. You might be best (if you are not familiar with working in shell) cutting and pasting the text from Mark's posting.

Those "rm" lines should have a SPACE after "rm". The BBS fonts make it hard to see, though.

There is ZERO evidence thus far of a bad hard drive, so you don't need a replacement. We just need to fix up whatever the software is choking on.

Cheers

Ok,. so somehing like this

empeg:/empeg/bin# rm /empeg/var/database* ----> rm= will remove files from said directory.
empeg:/empeg/bin# rm /empeg/var/playlists -----> rm= again removes files
empeg:/empeg/bin# rm /empeg/var/tags ------> rm= removes files
at the empeg:/empeg/bin# prompt then enter--> player -i
then enter ro at the same prompt
then exit at the same prompt.
If the unit repsonds and comes back do I still have to go into hi-jack and locate the file then delete or am I ok? I plan on re-loading hi-jack anyway.

Ok, I reloaded the dev. 2.01 final once again nothing new to report. Same non response.
I went into the bash prompt and type in as directed.

rw- EXT-2-fs warning: Checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended.

All three of the other directories (database, playlists, tags) came back as: cannot remove ' empeg/var/database* ' : No such file or directory .

I then tried player -i again and same story...Aborted.

Was able to load the newest version of hi-jack with no problems. Here is the info from the vital signs. It does not seem to list anything under Fid.

MK2a: 16mb 29gb
Playlist: 0000, Fid: <---- it was blank
Cac: 289, Buf: 90, Fre: 3160

Its starting to look bleak but I guess there is still hope with a new hard drive......

I understand formatting a new drive with the builder image then prepping it for use. But how do I remove the music from my original drive before I execute the builder image on it? I'm missing something here...
Its not a big deal if I lose the music...I need the player working....I can always re-load. Can I leave the original hard drive in place then run the builder image? Its like starting fresh all over again right?

Ahhh.. so we have a corrupted "tag" file most likely.

Well, if you don't mind re-uploading the music, then do this:

Hit Control^C to get a command prompt again. Then do:

rwm
rm -r /drive0/fids/*
player -i

wait for it to "finish".. should take a minute or less, then hit Control^C again, and..

rom
exit

If that works, no need for the builder image.

Ok, when i input rm -r/drive0/fids/* It comes back as
rm: invalid option--/
Try 'rm--help' for more info
Then it goes back to the prompt. I tried player -i and still nothing.

There's a space after the "-r". Methinks you need to change your font .

Maybe this will make it clearer:
Code:
rm -r /drive0/fids/*

I tried it both ways.

rm -r/drive0/fids/*

and

rm -r /drive0/fids/* comes back as: EXT2-fs error... bad entry in directory. inode out of bounds. then rm : cannot remove /drive0/fids/*. no such file or directory.

Just a guess....drive0.....is the number zero right? And not letter o. Just checking.

You got it right this time. That error message means that the file system is corrupt. Try the builder image. If that doesn't work, it may be time to retire that drive.

Of course Mark may be able to tell you something more...he's the hard drive guy.

On second thought, try running fsck (more or less the Linux equivalent of scandisk) before wiping out all your music. Maybe it can fix the filesystem.

And remember, when you try running the FSCK as JBjorgen suggested, do not try to type the commands yourself by hand. Copy the commands out of the instructions (one at a time) by selecting the text in the web browser window, copying it with the Edit/Copy command, and then pasting them into the terminal program window.

You have already demonstrated in this thread (more than once now) that you tend to miss certain important things like spaces when typing your commands. The Linux shell prompt is very sensitive to that sort of thing, and you can actually do more harm than good by typing the commands wrong. For instance, in the FSCK instructions, if you accidentally type unmount instead of umount, things will not work as expected.

So please, for the love of God, copy and paste the commands instead of trying to type them in.

Yes, do that. And do what Tony suggested, and use direct cut-and-paste for these things. MUCH less error-prone, especially for a demonstrably error-prone person.

If the fsck doesn't work out for you, then you can "fix it" rather quickly, losing all music, with something like this:

Again, hit control^C to get a command (shell) prompt first. Then do:

Code:
cd /
mkswap /swapfile
swapon /swapfile
umount /dev/hda4
mke2fs -m 0 -s 1 -i 131072 /dev/hda4
tune2fs -c 0 -i 0 /dev/hda4
mount -n /dev/hda4 /drive0 -orw
player -i
mount -n /dev/hda4 /drive0 -oremount,ro

## wait for it to finish rebuilding databases, then hit control^C and continue:

swapoff -a
exit

Heh.. oddly enough, one of my players just now had the same symptoms as yours. So I had to go through a similar sequence of commands to revive it (except I didn't blow away the music).

The command sequence above has now been updated to reflect some gotchas I found.

If you've already copied/pasted it, then grab a fresh cut of the commands NOW.

Cheers

Ok. no problem cut and paste. Its hard to tell if there is a space or not due to the bbs. I want to make sure I enter it correctly but sometimes its hard to tell.

Ok. I'll try fsck and if that is no go then I'll try the commands you posted. Cut and paste as Tony suggested. I hope this works. Thanks again for all the help....

I only just now realized that we were giving you slightly contrary instructions.

When we asked you to grab the boot log, we said NOT to use cut and paste.
When we asked you to issue commands, we said to USE cut and paste.

I know that sounds contradictory, but it's true and correct. Hey, I didn't release Hyperterminal with that damn bug in place.

Anyone know who I can dopeslap at Microsoft to get that damn bug fixed in an update patch? Only takes me about 15 minutes to drive over there, as long as I don't do it at rush hour.

I believe HyperTerminal Personal Edition (free) solves that bug. But that's still really just downloading yet another application.

I have good news!!!! Its seems like the player has come back to life!!!! One thing though. After I pasted the mount -n /dev command the prompt just disapeared. How long should wait? It seems like its finished since the player displays end of playlist. It doesn't responf to control^c. How should I enter the last two commands? swap off and exit?

Ok rebooted and exited shell prompt. Player now responds to buttons and it actually loads the software.

I was going to go ahead and load a few songs just to make sure all was well but it errored out when it tried to rebuild the database. I closed emplode. Should I run the 2.01 final once more? Do you think running the builder image will correct the database error in emplode?
One note...it still seems to run continuesly when applying power, no change in whine until power off. Steady hummm.... My friends Empeg is quiet until you hear the songs change.
I really appreciate you're devotion in helping me repair my Empeg.

EDIT: Ran Emplode once more with ethernet cbl and same results. Downloading failed while rebuilding database.
Error 0xc0041002

0xC0041002 is "No such file or directory" (Player error).

Did you try a manual database rebuild?

Are you referring to this faq?
http://www.riocar.org/modules.php?op=mod...;faqent=220#220

Then no I haven't yet. I was looking around the faq's and that entry was the most relevent to my situation. I tried removing the databases/playslist and tags then player -i as I did in an earlier post. Here is what I got.
empeg:/# player -i
Timezone: Atlantic/South_Georgia

player.cpp : 385:empeg-car 2.01 2004/07/06.
! tags.cpp : 61:Failed to open tags (0xc0041002).
Prolux 4 empeg car - 2.1434 Jul 5 2004
Vcb: 0x4086d000

Mlord suggested a corrupt tag in an earlier post but how do I get rid of them? Can you point me to the info on manually rebuilding the databases?

That was the thing you linked.

If in fact that's the problem (no guarantee it is, but what the hay)...

You would figure out which song file has a corrupt tag then delete both of its corresponding FIDs from your player's hard disk.

I don't know an easy way of how to locate which track has a corrupt tag. Assuming that your song files were copied to the player pretty much straight from your PC's hard disk (and you didn't modify the tags on the empeg), and assuming you still have the song files on your PC's hard disk, then you can browse through them there and look for things with garbage in their tags.

You should tend to look at files you added to the player recently, first. You should also first concentrate on files that you got off the internet, before moving on to files you ripped yourself.

It's also possible that the problem is a corrupt song file and not just a tag with garbage data in it. In that case, your search repair method would be similar.

In either case, after removing the offending files, you would manually rebuild the database using the steps at the FAQ entry you just linked. Make sure you do those steps ultra carefully, pasting each line into the terminal program directly from the FAQ so you don't mistype anything.

Ok, I just followed the link to rebuilding the database and its all the same. File or directory not found on each of those commands. After I enter exit....how long should I wait 'while it rebuilds the database'? Reason is it seems to be working (no prompt) but the player is 'off' and no sound coming from the hard drives. But after 10 minutes (of nothing happening) I hit control^c and it says something about SIGNIT or user interuption. Then it displays the info I posted earlier. I feel like I;m stopping the process but nothing seems to be happening.

Not sure if your aware but I deleted all the music in an earlier post. So I have no music just an empty playlist.

Builder Image here I come.....

Can you wake the player from its sleep mode and use its menus? Can you now load songs back onto the player? Or do you get the same error message in emplode as before?

Pressing control C is the user interruption. In other words I think it's supposed to say that if you press control C to interrupt the player software.

In all of this, you're using emplode 2.00 final right?

Yes, the player now responds to all button presses including all menus and loads the software. I tried loading songs thru emplode but it errors out when trying to rebuild the databases. The player has v2.01 final (dev) firmware and I was using the v2.0 beta 13 version of Emplode which is the one currently hosted on Empeg. I'm not aware of the 2.01 version of Emplode. Other than the database malfunction I have all controls over the player. Just won't allow me to load songs because of the database errors.

There isn't a 2.01 version of emplode. There is a 2.10 version of emplode, but I'd recommend that you don't use it unless you're loading FLAC or Ogg files -- it's less stable than 2.00-final.

Holy crap, you're right!

I don't think emplode itself changed significantly from 2.0 beta 13 to 2.0 final, but the fact that they're linking to the 2.0 beta 13 zip is strange. It should be the 2.0 final version up there. What the heck?

Who's in charge of the empeg.com web site these days?

That would appear to be either rob v or mac. I'd guess mac although neither work at empeg anymore.

IIRC, the only thing to change was the version number. Don't sweat it.

OK. It's just that all these places here on the BBS and in the FAQ talk about using version 2.0 final.

Update: No change, still has a problem with rebuilding the databases when using emplode. Since I don't have a lot of spare time right now I'm going to go ahead and send it to Stuart over at Eutronix and have them finish it off.

Just want to thank the EmpegBBS crew for all their support in helping me with my player. I appreciate all the support. Thanks Guys!!!

If it happens with an alpha version of the software, I wouldn't necessarily panic and assume your player is having problems. It might just be a bug in the alpha.

Unless you need the alpha software for a specific reason, (such as OGG or FLAC) I'd recommend sticking to 2.0 final.

yeah i was just trying out the ogg and flac support. it worked quite well for the last 2 months. I downgraded back to 2.01 after it totally locked up on me on thursday. The downgrade went good and it was back fully functional. I then tried reupgrading to 3.11a but it went back to its locked up nature. I'll tinker with it a bit more when I get a day off.

just glad i stumbled accross this thread.
