Peter - is any software nobbling going on that would make this a problem?

There is no software nobbling, but (and this is "public" information because anyone with a voltmeter could easily discover it) the particular brand of drive presently used is slightly unusual in being operable at 3.0V, rather than requiring 3.3V as most competitors do.

And AFAICT there are no released drives bigger than the 12GB already available in a Vibez.

Oh well, 12GB will do me. It's not like I ever really use portables these days (Virgin Atlantic's in flight entertainment system put a stop to that). Mostly I just want to see how much of the UI I can recognise!

You're obviously not flying enough then (or sleeping too much on flights) - Claire's pretty much blown through everything she wants to watch on the virgin system now

How has the Vibez been faring out in the wild since we last checked? Is the wheel holding up? Is the software solid, or at least receiving updates? Did it really turn out to have the Karma/empeg functionality that we love? How's the price and availability?

And the most curious question: Has anyone hacked a different add on board where the tuner should go? Or is it even possible?

I'd forgotten about these until mentioned elsewhere recently. I sadly have no need for one, but maybe I could create one.

I love mine. Use it every day.

Is the wheel holding up?

Beautifully. Need more options for allowing/disallowing certain functions when the player is locked.

Is the software solid, or at least receiving updates?

Solid, yes, except for one major bug that causes the player to hang if you save a playlist when repeat is enabled. No updates have been announced publicly yet.

Did it really turn out to have the Karma/empeg functionality that we love?

For the most part, yes. (I own a recently deceased Karma. Never had the pleasure of meeting an empeg.) Sadly, it is missing the ability to manage playlists independent of the Now Playling list.

How's the price and availability?

Fairly priced. Only two stores carry it in the US: J&R and B&H, both in NYC, which works out fine for me.

All in all, I rank Karma a little higher than Vibez, and Vibez higher than everything else.

Very cheap, very bad Vibez knock-off:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10661

It's really sad that the Vibez is so rare. It's such a cool piece.

I see that Trekstor lists 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB on their site.
It's exciting to see the 16GB at Amazon. Any clue if
1. the 32 will not be far behind?
2. the 32 is flash-based?

All are flash-based. No release dates have been given on the 32 GB. And given TrekStor's track record on releases, the 32 could be a long way away. frown
