I'm getting worried

I'm a bit confused here.
How is it that a spaceprobe which exceeded its projected lifespan by almost 400% is in any way a cause for concern?

Just breaking is one thing but they can't find it. Once in orbit it should stay there unless its obit decays or it gets abducted by aliens.

We are doing a lot poking around up there.

It’s probably inside of a black rectangle that’s full of stars.

I thought 2001 started (well, the modern end of the movie) with the TMA discovery on the moon.
The trip to Jupiter was organized in response to the target of the TMA/obelisk signal.
Was there a missing probe at some point? I can't remember.

I can't remember either. Maybe 2010 started that way

OK, I understand now.

...One by Four by Nine.

You are talking about the movie 2001, not the year 2001.

I thought you were referring to the spacecraft which (a few years ago) we inadvertently used as a ballistic missile against the previously peaceful Martians when we got furlongs and hogsheads confused with centimeters and hectoliters or something like that.

For some strange reason, this discussion has now brought KSR's "Stonehenge" book back into my mind, although I read it so many eons ago that I recall the plot not at all.

And that reminds me of some book I read years where all the Martians went on vacation (or something) and left mars. We, of course, moved to mars and into their houses. However they had a cool way of locking up. All their "stuff" was put into some kind of a dimensional shift that prevented anything from being moved/ripped off. We even tried a nuclear bomb on one house and it did nothing. Anyways they came back and I forget the rest.

I just wish I could lock my stuff with a dimensional shift device.

Wasn't that Ray Bradbury's - The Martian Chronicles.

Me go look now.

Edit: Done looking. Well maybe not but it has similarity's.

Orbit's a big place to be looking for something that's probably no bigger than a fridge. Particularly when it's around a completely different planet. One where we don't have radar stations looking up into the sky.

Basically, the only way we knew where it was before was because it was telling us. Now the radio's broken, it could carry on going round for thousands of years, and we'll probably never find it. Until we move to Mars and put up those radar stations.

"Find it" In this case most likely means the transmitter can't be seen by the local recievers.
