Beautiful! Send some of that our way, Tahoe is having a shite season, though we are getting a nice series of storms which should dump up there soon. Wish I had that fine vehicle i'd head up now!

I'm jealous! We've had two snowfalls out here in DC, but I'm almost embarrassed to call it snow. An inch here makes everyone freak out

We seldom get any 'worthwhile' snow daan saaf, so Thursday morning was quite a treat for us people here in rural Oxfordshire!
While driving along the snow covered country lanes on my way to work Thursday morning, I noticed a "lunatic" in the distance overtaking 2 cars coming towards me. It turned out to be a proper "Landy" with the standard on/off road knobbly tyres no doubt getting his revenge on the regular commuters who no probably tailgate and overtake *him* most mornings. I'd imagine he (rightly) felt pretty pleased with himself that morning!

The word is that it's raining below 7000 feet and the snow is wet and ugly.

My ski races were canceled for this weekend, just as they have been
on several previous weekends this season.

I have yet to make it up to Tahoe this year and may not.

However, the Weather Dudes are saying it isn't unusual in one of these El Nintendo years for there to be a dry Jan and a wet Feb/March. So if we can make up the Sierra snow deficit as well as we appear to be making up the Bay Area rain deficit, then I'll be spending some time at Tahoe in the spring.

Otherwise, your best bet is to head to Oregon, BC Canada, or Utah.

(Or strap on cross-country skis and head to upstate New York where they're getting seven feet of lake effect snow.... On second thought, that's probably not a great idea.)

Argh... I haven't been up to Tahoe yet either. I'm dying to get up but it hasn't been worth the trip with the crap conditions! Where do you usually get your Tahoe conditions reports from?

(sorry for the thread jack)

Yeah. I was there with some friends back in January -- my current avatar's from a jump in Kirkwood (I didn't land it!) -- and the snow was nothing to write home about. It was OK, but not great. Mind you, I twisted my ankle, so I only got about 5 days out of 9 anyway...

The week before last in Andorra was even worse. Pretty much the only stuff open was the stuff with snow-making equipment. Off piste was brown. The apres was excellent, though.

In central Scotland we have seen almost no snow - although the Ochils and the Pentlands had a good covering. At least it has been icy at around -4 degrees so I have had some fun driving.

I flew over Mammoth on the way to the Valley today. The eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada looked to have tons of snow. Couldn't see the western slopes -- clouds.

Cheers

It looks pretty good at the moment for kirkwood - they've had over 3 feet so far this weekend and it's still snowing. Kirkwood's pretty high though, so they might be just on the right side of the snow/rain divide. Planning to go up there this saturday - have to go to China on sunday but I'm not going to miss kirkwood+pow so it's gonna be a one day flying visit!

This weekend we're staying with a friend in Telluride - it was pretty hard packed yesterday but we had about 6" last night and it was plain awesome up there today! Should be more coming tonight, fingers crossed - it's snowing outside right now. Got to go back to work on tuesday though....

I use www.snow-report.com (the dash is important), plus the stuff linked from the Kirkwood page. The more optimistic, the better... snow-report has all sorts of animated maps too.

You want to meet up and head for the hills friday night? Planning to stay in a cheap motel at Jackson (just over halfway) on friday.

June Mountain, which has a peak of 10,135 feet, and is very near Mammoth, closed for the season on Jan. 29 due to extremely light snowfall.
They told all their season-pass holders that the passes will be honored at Mammoth for the rest of the year.

A friend of mine was at Heavenly last week and talked to some of the workers at the on-mountain restaurants and so forth.
One worker confided to him that they were cutting everybody's hours back and that he was currently looking for a software job (!) to take up the extra slack.

Lately I've been getting them from ski club friends who go up on Thursday, check stuff out, and send everyone email about what they find.

With any luck Kirkwood is high enough.
I did hear from friends that it was raining in the Alpine Meadows parking lot on Friday. But Kirkwood can have totally different weather.
I also heard Alpine is claiming 20 inches of snow from the storm, so maybe it all worked out.

Can I come, too?
Unfortunately, none of my cars are 4WD right now.
So, I would have to mooch a ride. (And I'm a two-planker, so that could potentially cause additional packing issues if people are tight on room.)

We're feeling it in Utah also... About 60" at most resorts. I live at the mouth of one of the Cottonwood canyons the last bit of snow we did have melted out of my yard yesterday. Although we do typically get better snowfall in Feb/March.

Looks like all the storms in January helped the resorts in Colorado. December it was looking bad, since all the blizzards were ones coming in from Albuquerque lows, and only dumping on the plains. I was able to drive my RWD Mustang to Monarch shortly after Christmas, and the only snow it touched was either in Colorado Springs, or the Monarch parking lot. The mountains were just amazingly dry.

Haha, I was in Telluride on 2/7, they had gone several weeks without snow. Southwestern CO needs a good dumping (except for Silverton). The next two days I was at Crested Butte, same story. A lot of their terrain was closed due to lack of snow.

Currently we have a full car (rack on the top, so room for planks) but if that changes I'll let you know... looking at the long range forecast it looks like it won't have snowed for a few days so it may well be just fine in a 2WD if you're going to make a last minute decision. They seem to keep 88 quite clear, but you probably want to carry chains just in case...

Unfortunately... or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I'm headed for Guatemala on Saturday, so I can't make it up this coming weekend, but as soon as I get back I'm up for a trip. Definitely let me know when you are headed up, a lot of my boarding buddies seem to have left town in the past year!

I have a bad case of powderitis due to hit Thursday, when Jay Peak is expected to get between 2 and 4 feet.
