Well, the "service pack" is finally out, and upgrade went smoothly on the Mini I use at work. Took about 20 minutes, and was a little sluggish for a few minutes as it reindexed some things. Only compatibility issue that I have is that iStat Menus went away. Sadly I can't use the Exchange support built in until the server is migrated to 2007, so no idea how well that works. I found this site handy for compatibility issues. Apple also has their own. Overall, $49 for a 5 pack license to cover all my machines seems reasonable. I'll be curious to see how quickly 3rd party apps adapt some of the newer tech to make them speedier.

It's going to take a while or some third party apps to take advantage of new technologies to generate speed boosts. Depending of course on what technologies we're talking about.
Snow Leopard is somewhat unfinished in a number of areas, including OpenCL. Some parts that are in fact present in the current version are also slower than older methods/paths. Hopefully this stuff will stabilize in the next 2 or 3 software updates.
At the moment however, I wouldn't recommend the update for the general public. It's more of an enthusiast item for now.
My own software needs some updates as well to jive with some of the changes Apple has made in their HID and IOKit. Not to mention providing a 64-bit native System Preference pane for systems that can take advantage of it.

I left it well over 12 months before I upgraded to Leopard, there seemed to be so many issues with it. I eventually upgraded when I wanted to start writing iPod/iPhone apps. It doesn't seem like a massive problem this time, but I think I'll give it a couple of months to settle/mature a bit before I do anything.
How do the upgrades apply? I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger about 3 months after I'd upgraded my HD. I'm now thinking about upgrading my HD again, if I've already upgraded to Snow Leopard, can I do a fresh install with the DVD I get as part of the upgrade? Or would I have to install Tiger from the original discs, then Leopard, then Snow Leopard?

Or would I have to install Tiger from the original discs, then Leopard, then Snow Leopard? I've heard that you can go to from Tiger right to Snow Leopard, but I don't know about a fresh install.

The upgrade DVD I bought allowed me to do a full clean install on my Macbook Air. The disc doesn't even say upgrade or anything to differentiate it from the one in the Mac Box Set, beyond a slightly different part number. So I think Apple is just expecting their users to be honest and buy the proper version this time. I have an up-to-date disc on the way for the Air, not sure if that one will be an upgrade only, or an identical copy to what I bought for my other machines. They did change the install process though, eliminating the manual prompt about what type of install to do. You will need to boot to the DVD, then run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu to wipe the drive. Also, looking forward to making use of this feature: Wake on Demand. Pretty cool how it works, the Airport Base station runs a Bonjour proxy. If it sees a request for a bonjour service on the network and the machine is asleep, it takes care of sending the wake on lan packet out. This includes wide area bonjour requests, aka Back to my Mac. This works for Apple TVs as well.

The new feature is pretty cool, but wake-on-LAN isn't exactly foolproof. I never got around to debugging the problem. I should try that again.

Well, not bad so far. Took about 20 minutes to install on the home Mac Pro, and freed up 12gb of something in the process. Wake on LAN is working, I can wake the Pro from the Air just by clicking it in the Finder now instead of having to run a WoL program in the terminal.
On the downside, I may have found my first incompatibility to deal with. I can't print to my HP Color Laserjet 2600n even after installing the Apple HP driver package. *edit* Seems Snow Leopard didn't include it by default, but the download from HP works even though it doesn't say 10.6.
Oh, and word of warning to iPhone developers, make sure to grab the Snow Leopard specific SDK. Until I installed that alongside XCode 3.2, my iPhone wasn't showing up in iTunes, probably due to the older Leopard iPhone SDK.

Do any of the idiot reviewers out there actually know why there's a storage space savings with Snow Leopard? It doesn't seem they know that most of it comes from dumping all the PowerPC code. I've seen smeone speculating about "better compression" and "less printer drivers installed" - OMG.

The PPC thing is funny, as soon as I heard the size was being reduced so much I knew it was going Intel only, yet I haven't read a single review or news story that connects the two.

I've seen smeone speculating about "better compression" and "less printer drivers installed" - OMG. One of the reviewers did talk with Apple, and it was pointed out that while PowerPC code is gone, the addition of 64 bit Intel code alongside the 32 bit code adds back in similar amounts of space usage. Checking an app that doesn't appear to have changed much somewhat confirms this.: Leopard:
-rwxrwxr-x+ 1 root admin 261K Sep 23 2007 /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit
/Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
/Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386
/Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit (for architecture ppc7400): Mach-O executable ppc
Snow Leopard:

I did think about the extra overhead of 64bit binaries, but for some reason assumed the combined effect on this new OS would be smaller. That said, when you can compare that the executable portion of an individual application has not only remained at a similar footprint, but may have actually grown, where does the majority of the savings actually come from? Have they left off large amounts of resources from the installed applications? Such as localized interface, txt and image files? This could also make for a faster install with less files to write. A huge savings can be had here, as for some applications, resources account for the overwhelming majority of its installation footprint. I knew this OS would be Intel-only long before knowing what it would be called. Quite a few months before Leopard itself was released. It's great for Intel users, but really a shame in its timing for PPC systems. Apple still needs to support some of them until at least through 2011 (that's a 5-year support lifecycle), so don't expect that Leopard updates will stop.

I think the claimed space savings come from removing unused print drivers and the like, instead downloading them on demand.

I think the claimed space savings come from removing unused print drivers and the like, instead downloading them on demand. Some people are reporting a 20GB savings (which I do find hard to believe). I can't remember how much space is used by print drivers, but I don't think it's near 20GB. Especially since by default, no version of Mac OS has installed absolutely all the print drivers that come on the install discs. Regarding print drivers however, I find that I get much better performance from the Guttenprint (Gimp Print) PCL driver than I do with the LexMark PS2 driver for my aging Optra Lxn+ - go figure. Tom, can you check the resources folder of TextEdit to check the presense and sizes of the various lproj folders? I've been meaning to install 10.6 for three weeks now, but you know how things are when there's other stuff to do (like attend to a crying baby )

My Leopard TextEdit is exactly 15,058,042 bytes. I've installed with the default language settings which means most applications include a basic set of languages built in. I could see how someone in my situation would see a huge decrease in OS install size by eliminating most languages, but I'm still perplexed at your 12GB savings.
I suppose it could be be tightening up compression on images files (and other resources) and better (more optimized) compilation of the binaries.

Going back over my screenshots, I found something odd when looking at the hard drive info panel.
Leopard: Capacity: 279.14 GB Available: 46.33 GB Used: 232.81 GB
Snow Leopard: Capacity: 299.73 GB Available: 58.28 GB Used: 241.45 GB
Now I'm even more puzzled. Why did my drive capacity jump up 20GB? I didn't pay close attention to my Mini to see what it reported.

Ok, that makes a bit more sense, had no idea they were converting over to 1000.
Going off of used bytes before and after, I gained 7.94 GiB in space, more in line with what Apple says. /Library/Printers on my Leopard install was only 744MB, so the rest of the space savings came from something else.

This has to be the most boneheaded move Apple has made in the past 20 years. Seriously.
I wonder how much pay-off they got from the HD manufacturers? Maybe they want their iPods to appear bigger because they'd already started using base 10 even for flash.
I hope there's a default setting somewhere to alter this. It's almost enough reason not to update to Snow Leopard.
EDIT: I feel strongly enough about the stupidity of this change that I just have to say that the person responsible for the idea is a total fucktard.

I couldn't agree more, what a daft idea, if for no other reason that it gives PC users something else to bash the Mac over.

I had nothing to do this afternoon so I popped to my nearest Apple store and picked up an upgrade copy. They didn't have any of the box sets with iLife and iWork left. After confirming the computer would boot off the DVD I went ahead and upgraded the existing installation.
My first impression is that it seems much snappier and more responsive than Leopard. My late-2006 MBP still has some mileage in it, it seems.
Only two problems at the moment, the version of the Cisco VPN client I have no longer works, so currently I can't try the Exchange support with the servers at work. Also, it whinged about some old HSDPA express card drivers I installed ages ago to test a new 3G card at work and don't even have any more.
The only minor peeves I have is my Quicktime Pro key only being valid for 7.x so I have to fork out for an 10.x key and that I had to pay to upgrade my Parallels.
I'm not sure about the whole 1000 vs 1024 thing, not sure if I even care. Everyone seems to have more storage than god nowadays anyway. I keep almost everything on my ReadyNAS.
I am thinking about getting an SSD in the next couple of months so I'll probably do a fresh install and grab the new iLife 09 at the same time.

There is no Quicktime pro for the new Quicktime. All the screen capture, file converting and uploading is built in. Really a shame about Parallels though. My VMWare code I bought for 1.0 still works for their Snow Leopard compatible version, 2.0.5.

There doesn't appear to be much in the way of export options in the new player. There's a few presets for iPhones and Apple TV's, but nothing else really, nothing for creating DV streams or image sequences. It looks to me like it's very much still a work in progress, there's no way you could call it a replacement for v7 Pro.
Parallels 4 is currently chewing through my existing VM's and burning my knees in the process. I'm now giving Fusion some very serious consideration.

My incompatibilities so far:
InsomniaX Plug Suit MenuMeters
Oh, and I don't know how to disable Spotlight any more. (Edit: I think it was disabled, but the menubar item had come back. Had to move /System/Library/Search.bundle out of the way.)

That said, my biggest irritation so far has been that for a piece of software that could have been downloaded, that could have just been a CD, that could have just been the sleeve with the CD and some docs, that could have just been a CD-sized box with a sleeve and some docs, that could have just been a 10" x 6" x 3" cardboard shipping box with packing material and the CD box shipped from the local Apple store, was actually a shipping box shipped from 400 miles away.

There doesn't appear to be much in the way of export options in the new player. Quicktime 7 is available as a separate install and appears to have all the same export options under Snow Leopard that it did before. I'm guessing Apple is doing the same thing they did with iMovie. When 08 came out, they still offered 06 for a while for free. I'm betting by 10.7, they manage to get everything back into the new app somehow. My upgrade tucked it away into Utilities as "Quicktime Player 7", and apparently it will only do this if it sees a Pro key prior to upgrade. Otherwise, it can be installed later by using the Optional Installer app on the SL DVD. Oh, and I don't know how to disable Spotlight any more. I don't think I could work on a Mac without Spotlight once 10.5 improved it. I use it as an app launcher now, along with finding documents all the time. Never noticed any overhead hit with it to justify disabling it. That said, my biggest irritation so far has been that for a piece of software that could have been downloaded. As for the download aspect, an OS is one of the few things I definitely want on a physical medium of some sort. Going to a store and grabbing a disc seems easier then going to a store to grab a blank dual layer DVD to then burn the software to. Plus if my hard drive blows up, having the DVD to boot off of is nice.

I'll still use VLC for playback and Quicktime 7 Player for conversion. It's a nice looking app, but it's really lacking in features at the moment, even simple things like 'Always on Top' seem to be missing.

Here's another weird one. An SMB share I have on an OpenFiler machine that worked under 10.5 failed to mount correctly under 10.6. It would mount, but the permissions on the share's root directory would be set to 000, and the Finder wouldn't allow me access, saying "The folder xxx can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents." I could still see the contents from the command line.
Turns out that it's because the "primary group" of the share was a group that my user was not a member of, even though a group my user was a member of was set to have RW access. It started working properly once I set the "primary group" of the share to the one I was a member of.
The share worked properly under 10.5 and works correctly from every other SMB client I've tried. I don't know what Snow Leopard is doing to create this problem.

Handbrake for conversion, MPlayer and (very infrequently) Quicktime with Perian for playback or VLC.
Any player that doesn't support two different skip amounts is next to useless for playback of anything you may need to rewind/forward. If a player doesn't have skip at all, like Quicktime, it's really the pits. After getting used to instant jumps, using an accelerated playback for seeking, even if progressive (like a DVD player), is as bad as getting teeth pulled.
It's interesting news about the new QT Player and lack of a paid Pro option - it was rumored long ago, but I haven't seen anyone else mention it since SL's release. I've always thought the $30 was an exreme gouge, especially considering you still had to pay even more for MPEG2.

I really "enjoyed" the fact that full screen was a Pro option. (I think they had changed that in recent versions, but still....)

For me VLC plays everything, including transport streams and stays on top so I can play something and still work. For me that should be an option on every video playback app.
Until recently, for anything other than DVDs, Handbrake was useless for me. I used Quicktime Pro to assemble and trim files before converting them. I also use ffmpegX quite extensively due to the vast number of muxing and stream adaptation options.
Although Apple Compressor makes the best looking MPEG2's IMHO.

but it's really lacking in features at the moment, even simple things like 'Always on Top' seem to be missing. They did fix one of my annoyances though. With 7, if you put a video into full screen on a secondary screen, it would pop back out when you clicked on a window on the main screen. The newer player stays full screen, making it easier to dedicate the second monitor to video. Now if only I could get Hulu to work that way. Now they just need to cut out the video player in iTunes and defer to Quicktime or something. Both have kinda similar UIs, but the iTunes one won't respond to trackpad gestures.

The Full Screen option was likely one of the top driving factors in Pro adoption. That and the export options I suppose. But I'm confident more people were in need of full screen.
It was always possible to switch to full screen using an AppleScript command though, so that was a workaround for those too lazy to search some hack site for a code. I always just used our (then) corporate registration on all my machines.

XScreenSaver (and probably most other third-party) screensavers no longer work, because, for some reason, Apple decided that screensavers should be dynamically loaded into the screensaver application rather than be separate applications, and they decided to make the screensaver application be 64-bit (because of the massive numbers that screensavers deal with?) which means that all the old 32-bit screensavers can no longer be loaded.

Oooh, I'm looking forward to JWZ's no-doubt-forthcoming rant on the subject already! Though screensavers being 64-bit actually makes a lot of sense -- many of them are very compute-intensive, and of course unlike sparc32/sparc64, amd64 code is faster than ia32 even if it doesn't need the bigger registers, as there are also more registers than in the rather miserly ia32 register file. Gizmodo is reporting, 3rd hand, that Snow Leopard is reporting diskspace in base 10 values. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2419
