RioCar 12gb was seen as the top 25 gadgets for the summer in URB's June 2001 issue. (Urb is a magazine specializing in the Electronic music movement)
In reply to:
Rio Car Player
Whne it comes to digital audio players, there is no such thing as too much memory. The good people at Rio understand this and have outfitted the Rio Car player with a whopping 12 GB of storage, enough for over 200 hours of CD-quality music. The car-mounted unit can be easily removed for music download via USB, Ethernet, or serial interfaces, and a shock-resistant platform for the hard drive assures skip-free playback. A pocket-sized infrared remote is also included (MSRP $1,199)
Reprinted from URB#085/Page 102
Hmm.. so maybe I am a techno junky... I own many of the items that they're listing, such as The Ricochet Wireless Modem (whcih they misrepresented, with the price being shown as MSRP $340 plus 29.95/month - reaslistically this is $99 plus 74.99$/month for 128kb+ access (can, and has reached speeds as high as 384kb), or $39.99 for 64kb access...)
...I also own a portable DVD player - although not the one listed on this list... (it's amazing what some high-end electronics go for on Ebay...)
My work's forcing me to carry/test a RIM 957 pager right now which is listed in the same article.. (awesome technology, not worth the price..)
Hmm.. Maybe I need to put together a top list of gadgets that *I* personally can't live without?:)
- Empeg MK2 36GB
- Even more imortantly, the stereo that let's me hear the empeg in my car
- Garmin Streel Piolet III GPS - without which I had been totally lost since moving to the bay area
- Tivo! Although I need to figure out the broadband hack before it'll work again - we disconnected our wired-phone because we never used it:(
- PS2 for those 4-player gaming madnesses
- My Technics 1200SL's, mixer, stacks and stacks of records, as well as understanding naighbors
- Intel Pocket Concert 128MB Portable MP3 Player (which would be that much better w/ a gui to send tracks from Empeg into it:)
- ATT Cable Modem - despite the problems that I've constantly been hearing about cable modem services, My service has been rock-solid from day one with downloads between 3200-3700kbs (yes - a meg in less then 3 seconds...)
- My Apple Airport Base which lets my laptops work from anywhere nearby
- My rugged razor scooter for going to/through/from work
- Motorola Timeport Cellphone (sprint) - (can't find a semilar phone that catches my eyes as being worthwhile upgrading to...)
- Ricochet 128kbs Wireless modem + service (work anywhere - even from the beach which I've had to do (better then driving 45 minutes to office...)) - HIGHLY recommended for those that maintain production servers
- IBM Thinkpad X20 - for 95% of my computer work
- My personally built firehouse - dual celeron 366's running at 550mhz, 512mb memory, 80GB IDE HDD, 35GB SCSI BOOT HDD, CD Burner, DVD, etc, etc - used for one thing and only one thing lately - ripping cd's...
Also - I would like to add myself to Napster's Case and Point arguments.. Evern since getting my current job (decent sallary, NO free time..) I've been averaging 4-5 new CD's per week from amazon.com - I have to say their recommendations are actually very helpful.. (although they have recommended crap in the past - but these are few and far in between...)
SOoooo - what's everyone else's must-have gadgets already-have gadgets? I'I'm very curious...

Well, let me run down my list. I don't get that magazine so I can't say what is and isn't on the list.
- Empeg Mark II 20gb Blue
- Cheapo amp and factory speakers for now
- Serial GPS to hook into the laptop for roadtrips like the empeg meet
- Dishplayer 7100 plus a 40gb drive, digital satelite PVR goodness
- Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and Super Nintendo
- Sprint Broadband (for 12 more hours, thank god I can finally dump it) Wireless fixed serviced
- Apple Airport
- Nokia 8290 with Voicestream. IR allows for many neet uses, and it's a tiny phone with awesome SMS features.
- Omnisky service, with a PCMCIA CDPD modem (19.2k). Also useful on the roadtrips, but being dumped once Ricochet is in Colorado Springs
- Compaq Armada M700, awesome little laptop. Mine until I leave my current job
- PIII 800 system, running Win2000. Currently used as my TV as well since it's hooked to a 27 inch monitor, and gaming machine
- Celeron 300 acting as a linux internet sharing device. Does too much to list here
- Sony 18.1 inch LCD monitor, sitting in it's box waiting for the move to be completed
- iPaq handheld, with PCMCIA sleeve to work with my 802.11 or CDPD connections
And for the things on the wish list (These are what I am looking at now, nothing out of my current financial reach is here)
- New system to put the 27 inch monitor in the living room when I move. Currently being shipped a Duron 850, and looking into quiet PC stuff.
- IR control for above system. IRMan on order, will program and integrate into a media program I am looking into for remote controbility all from the Dishplayer remote, including DVD (mmm, progressive scan). Also has PVR features, for the local channels
- Apple G4 laptop. Currently waiting on a new revision with more modern features, since this M700 is working fine for now
- As talked about above, Ricochet service
- Microdrive for iPaq, and possible future digital camera
- Better broadband (Will have after the move, from a flawless @home local provider)
- Indash LCD. I've been looking at this for a while, and have money to get one. Currently considering one with a touch screen, CD/DVD playback and TV tuner.
- DVD based navigation system for above wish
- Much better soundsystem for the car to complement the empeg and DVD
- Portable hard drive based MP3 player, waiting to see if empeg ever enters this area, as it's not a huge priority
- Gamecube system, (Will have on launch day). A few more good games for the PS2 so I will buy one

No, I Don't *really* think I need a Rio Receiver for my 40m2
flat. The Empeg can be heard from all over the flat, and accessed via Cisco Aironet/Symbol wireless network from our laptops and PDAs.

"...from our laptops and PDAs." How do you access it from the PDA? I've been trying to do this for a while now (see some of my more recent posts in Technical) & haven't found a sexy solution (although I just got jeode's JVM for PocketPC and will try jemplode soon). The closest I've come is via an xml control of Winamp streaming from the empeg...

Greetings!
I have actually tried this, but not really messed around with the java applet. The link tends to be too slow for any useful streaming. As to remote control, if you can get the applet working in PocketIE (I think there is software you can load to support it), it should work.
Of course, my major question is "Why?". I know... I know... "Why not?" You would need to have your iPAQ connect in to your wireless carrier, through a firewall or VPN in to your local empeg network (unless you have it raw on the internet, of course), and into your empeg. If you need wireless access, I assume you do not have a line of sight to the empeg for IR, you have network connectivity to the empeg, and are somewhere that you (or someone else) can hear it. Is this ever really the case in practice???
Note: I have been doing handheld connectivity testing with our corporate firewall and VPN client software, and my empeg just happened to become a test site... From what I have seen, bandwidth from the cell modem and screen size seems to be a very limiting factor. If someone could point me to a java engine for the iPAQ, I will try the applet, though.

I'm more interested in using a 802.11 wireless card with the iPaq to control the empeg. Plenty of speed, and no firewall issues since my 802.11 sits inside the same network as the empeg would. My biggest stumbling block was getting PocketIE to use anything Java. Everything I found was only a local JVM, and would not have network access or integration with PIE. Maybe I missed one, or something changed...

I'm with Drakino in the 802.11b camp. Plenty of b/w for streaming music & control screens. As far as I can tell Drakino, you're about where I am: no direct empeg control via Ipaq. I'm trying to get jemplode to run in the Jeode JVM but no luck so far (only about 15 minutes of fiddling & I haven't gotten jemplode to install). Displayserver is a javascript applet and as such is not supported at all in Pocket IE.
Paul, you're right on the money: no line of sight access to my empeg from the listening room (or porch in this case). So far the only music streaming direct to Ipaq I've been able to achieve is the Live365 applet (although streaming & control are two different goals). WMPlayer "can" do it although only with .wma files and I never got it to work as it requires a web server too (ugh on W98). Direct control of empeg via Ipaq also still eludes me.
I was hoping you had a secret recipie!

Looking through the M$ website about Pocket IE it says that it has jscript support. Whether or not this is the same as Javascript, I do not know. I'm in the Idiot category (so far as programming goes) so I'm going to wait for a later (not alpha) displayserver 2.0 to try with the Ipaq.

JavaScript and JScript are the same thing. JavaScript and Java are two completely different things.
I think Display Server uses Java.

I'm a bit closer this morning after figuring out that my hub/router doesn't pass packets to IP addresses inside the LAN if they're not within the assigned DHCP range. That being fixed I was able to connect to the empeg's displayserver web pages. I tried launching the control applet & had partial success.
Let me backtrack a bit: I've installed the Jeode JVM ($20 at Handango.com) and registered its plugin with Pocket IE.
When I clicked "applet in current window" link I got a grey box with the Jeode JVM label, but the applet didn't load any further (although the grey area seemed the right size). I'm feeling encouraged and will poke around with some of the settings in the JVM to see if I can turn anything up. Getting closer.

This excerpt from the Jeode JVM readme may explain why the displayserver applet doesn't work:
"Also, the Jeode runtime plug-in does not currently support communicationsr between JavaScript and Java applets.
Thismeans that applets that require this interaction will not work with Jeode Runtime."
Can anyone tell me if this sounds logical?

By what I see of the Displayserver 1 applet, it's pure Java. Basicially Javascript controlling java would be seen as HTML links or buttons sitting outside the grey Java box controlling it. On displayserver, you are clicking directly on the java applet.
I'll have to dig up my PCMCIA sleeve for the iPaq and play around with it soon.

Let me know what you find. I'm like the blind man and the elephant here... I guess part of my confusion is that the link for 'applet in current window' is empeg.html and 'applet in a new window' is jscript.html. Trying to open 'applet in a new window' does nothing (although this could be that I don't have Jeode configured correctly) and 'current window' results in the grey screen with 'JeodeJVM Plugin' flashing. Is there a way to call the displayserver Java app directly (without going through the browser interface)? So close...
