I'm in need of a pair of safety glasses, but the problem is that the bridge of my nose is very wide. All of the safety glasses or goggles that I've been able to look at in person rely on the sides of your nose supporting the glasses, and they simply don't fit me. They sit so far either up or out that they're not really protecting my eyes from anywhere but straight ahead. Even those cheap clear vinyl laboratory goggles don't fit. I really need a pair of goggles that has no nose involvement at all, like cup-style welding goggles, except clear. Of course, no one seems to make clear lenses for those, and I'd prefer to actually be able to see while being safe. Then I thought about looking for motorcycle or snowboarding or tactical or whatever goggles, and found that it's unclear whether such goggles want to touch my nose or not. Obviously, if they just have temple arms they're going to have to, so I'm sure it's going to have to be a strap-type goggle, which is fine. I was hoping someone might have some knowledge about safety glasses that could point me in the right direction.

I wonder if costume goggles meant for steampunk outfits would work?
I was at a costume store for that very purpose recently (was headed to SteamCon in Seattle last month), and there were plenty of toy steampunk goggles that were shaped like welding goggles but had clear lenses.
I actually ended up getting some harry potter goggles and removing the quidditch logo from them because they were a bit cooler that way. Same kind of thing though.

What are you protecting against with the safety glasses? Using goggles which weren't designed to be safety glasses is probably not a good idea if there is actual risk involved. If its just so you don't get dirt or whatever in your eye then its probably okay...

General potential trauma-to-the-eye stuff. Pneumatic nailers, circular saws, Dremel tools, etc.
And I'm very disinclined to buy toy glasses. There's an ANSI spec for safety glasses, Z87.1, and I'd like to get something that at least matches that.

The welding goggles should have clear lenses in them in front of the dark lenses. The shaded lenses are more expensive than the plastic, but the plastic should be good for safety purposes.

Maybe these guys make something that would fit http://www.fatheadz.com/Walmart has some frames from these guys if you want to try them on. They didn't have the goggles though.

Is this a personal requirement is it work related? I.E. Do you need side shields or warp around style. These might work. Edit: or maybe one of these.

If OSHA is involved, they will likely require Polycarbonate lenses.

I find Mack Splash glasses to be comfortable and also the only ones I have tried that come down far enough to reduce the gap between the bottom of the lens and cheeks to an acceptable amount while providing plenty of wrap around side protection. Impact resistant and come in smoke or clear lens. I wear these and a face shield when cutting or grinding.

Okay. Let me restate the problem.
I need safety glasses that do not touch the sides of my nose. If there are nose pads or, even worse, places molded into the plastic for my nose to fit into, they will not work.
The safety glasses need to be actual safety glasses, not make-believe, and preferably ANSI Z87.1. However, they are not for work. I just really need to get a pair for personal use. There are no strict requirements other than the ones I've defined for myself. (I'm not really sure how that's relevant.)
I want them to protect my eye from all directions. They don't necessarily need to be clear in any direction but straight ahead, though more visibility would obviously be preferable.
I was thinking that one of our winter sports enthusiasts might know of something.

I just used a pair of calipers to measure the width of the bridge of my nose where eyeglasses nose pads would rest. It's just over one inch, and that was squeezing pretty hard on bone.
Comparing that to a pair of safety glasses lying around work shows that the bridge doesn't get that wide until below the nose rest area. This means that I can either move the glasses way up my face or have the sit far away from my face.
The little arms on nose pads tend not to be long enough to move far enough to the side, so they also have to be moved up, which puts them just in the edge of my field of vision, and near enough to my tear ducts as to make them wildly uncomfortable.
Both of my pairs of prescription glasses are the sort that are metal frames with no nose pads, and rest solely on the top of the bridge of my nose.

What's wrong with the one I suggested? Even those cheap clear vinyl laboratory goggles don't fit. The nose opening is still narrow enough that they have to sit up really high, and the bottom of the glasses are just barely below my eye, which means I can't see down. The DeWalt ones have similar problems, though they do look to be more flexible. I'll try to see if I can find them locally to try. The bugeye ones are pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, but it's totally unclear how wide the nasal passage is, or whether it's intended to rest on the nose or not.

Those were the first ones I found But I didn't see the info about replacing the lenses. If you are going to use these for general purpose shop work, then I suggest you manufacture your own clear lenses out of lexan or something similar, as the clear lenses it comes with won't protect your eyes from any sizable flying debris.

Do you think I can't search on my own? I'm looking for some input from someone who can confirm whether or not the nose is used in a pair of goggles.

Thanks, Caleb. I can't find any protection data on them, though. You'd think that they would be rated as physically protective, but I don't want to chance it.

The first ones I mentioned, which you dismissed, look pretty much like ones I've personally used which wrap around your nose, but don't use your nose for support. They simply cup to your face and use the elastic band to hold them in place.
Bitt, if you're looking for someone to hand-deliver the perfect item to your doorstep then you should just ask for that and perhaps send around a 3D mold of your face for testing purposes.
No one is going to be able to tell you what's going to please you precisely, regardless of the nose bridge situation. I've not had any issues with the nose part of any safety glasses/goggles, but I have with pinching above the ears and sweating/fogging for example.
I'm probably going to try a pair of those DeWalt models next since I've been without any type of eye shielding for some time and I do more than an average amount of work that's more safely done with them.
The welding goggles you mentioned in your first post are also available with clear lenses - you didn't find these, but they've already been mentioned to you, so yeah, you kind of implied you weren't able to locate them on your own, not that you didn't try.

I'm asking if anyone is aware of any goggles that do not expect your nose to be a certain shape. I stated in the first post that traditional vinyl lab goggles didn't work. Suggesting traditional vinyl lab goggles is, then, not really an appropriate suggestion.
I was just hoping someone might say "I have a pair of XXX and they don't come anywhere near my nose."

Sugge The full-face shield I linked to earlier does not contact one's nose or face in any way. And it is easy to flip up out of the way to scratch an itch or whatever. It also meets the safety specifications you want. Cheers

I was just hoping someone might say "I have a pair of XXX and they don't come anywhere near my nose." With the exception of swim goggles, every single pair of googles I've worn (safety and ski) have rested on (or across the bridge of) the nose. Even if they have a strap to hold them on. I'd say go with Mark's suggestion.

Yeah, the face shield is a good fallback position. I'd rather have goggles, just as a personal preference, but it'll definitely work.

To be clear, I'm totally fine with them resting on the, uh, groove between the nose and the brow. (That's bound to have a name. Aha. Nasofrontal suture.) It's only the sides of the nose (frontal process of the maxilla) that is the problem.

After over a month of working on it pretty constantly, our property is starting to look pretty good again. Still some stumps to be torn up and some painting to do, but all in all, it's coming along. It's certainly nice enough to enjoy some time in the hammock on the beach, as long as the bugs aren't out. Back on topic: You could always go with this Z87.1 compatible solution .

I was at the hardware store today and took another look at the glasses that they had available. Sadly, I couldn't find any of the DeWalt goggles to try. However, one of the types of "Orange County Chopper" safety glasses that they had had positionable nose pads, and they actually worked. The wires that held the nose pads were mounted to the bridge instead of to the medial rim of the lens, and that gave them enough leeway to move to the side without getting in their own way. However, the glasses get miserable reviews online. I'll have to revise my previous viewpoint on the nose pad style and take another look at better brands.

I've been assuming that you wear prescription eyewear, but I now suspect not.
No? It's time to go visit an optometrist, they take care of fitting every type of face and will know what safety frames can be had. The selection my not be great, but hey, they are safety glasses, you won't be wearing them where anybody will care. After that it's just a matter of having a zero power safety lens cut to fit the frames.
It will be a LOT more expensive that anything purchased over the counter, but you will get what you need.
Who knows, the optometrist may even know where the get something OTC.

I really need a pair of goggles that has no nose involvement at all, like cup-style welding goggles, except clear. Of course, no one seems to make clear lenses for those, and I'd prefer to actually be able to see while being safe. Back to the top post, You should be able to take those goggles to an optometrist and have him fit zero power safety lenses to them. Presuming the lenses are replaceable at all.
