Saw this on another message board. Just found it to be interesting enough to post here.

Saw this on another message board.

And to think I wasted my money buying that overpriced empeg.

It would take an afternoon to assemble it, and then probably a couple more hours to write player and download software for it, and I'd have my own empeg at a fraction of the cost.

Why didn't I think of that?

hey man, I can't tell if I'm getting crapped on, but I have no regrets after buying the empeg.

I just posted it because I thought it was interesting. I figured others would also find it interesting.

If I wanted to dissuade people from buying an empeg, I would have posted this thing in the General forum.

No, robricc, Doug wasn't crapping on you, he was kidding around.

Your post was perfectly appropriate for this forum, and we do like to keep up on all technologies.

Doug was just re-making the point that Empeg's been making all along: Anyone can build MP3-capable hardware. It's the software that separates the men from the boys.

I think projects like that are cool because that is what gets you thinking about mp3 in the car.... so you don't mind spending a couple hundred dollars on it... until you figure out what a pain in the bung it would be... so you look at options that are jsut a little more money... but then you find how limited they are... next thing you know, you are drooling over an entry level empeg for a few months before you finally decide to get one!

I sort of did what you say. I tried to build one. You can see it here. Then I got one of the first generation Neo 35's. I got tired with it's shortcomings and finally bought the empeg.

Empeg is much better than anything I could have built, and anything Neo will ever build.

I am impressed!

You made it much further along than I ever did when I was contemplating a similar project. Then I stumbled across the empeg site (it was referenced in PC Magazine, of all places) and saved not only my sanity but a great deal of time and money.

What finally stopped me was the realization that the software especially would be totally beyond my abilities. I believe the guys@empeg now have nearly ten man-years in their software, and they know what they're doing -- it would have taken me ten man-millenia to do it.

I spotted this on the same site:

http://www.mp3megaplayer.com/comipdigmusc.html

Now if only empeg/Rio/Sonicblue would make something similar, but with Ethernet.

I am currently considering buying something for my lounge, and I'm wondering whether to wait for empeg to announce their secret project, or for Nokia to release their Media Terminal, or to knock up a PC based system myself.

They do make something similar with ethernet... just no hard drive. It's called the Rio Receiver. Plus it costs a lot less than the one you pointed out.

Surely they are going to need beta testers...

If you decide to build your own PC for your lounge, you probably want to check out the Home Theater PC forum at www.avsforum.com which is an invaluble source of information for all things HTPC-related. Probably the best on the web...
