I have a couple of gmail email addresses. One main address, and a few others. I pull the mail from the other email addresses to the main address via gmails "get email from other email address via Pop3" option. This has always worked for me. (And still does)

Today, I tried to do the same for my seven year old son. (Because I want to start learning him how to use email). I also created one main email address and a second one. The main email address is on the family domain extension which is coupled with Google apps (so it works like gmail basically). The second email is a "true" gmail.com address. The Pop3 and imap option has been enabled on both email addresses.

Now, when I try to set it up like so that the mail of the @gmail.com address is fetched to the main address, it doesn't work. I keep on getting the error that the pop3 password is wrong, but it isn't. I can login to the webmail app with the same password no problem. It's the same password on both email accounts even.

I'm at a loss here. Anybody knows what's going on?

Why not just use the forwarding options? I have mine set to "Forward a copy of incoming mail to <other address> and <archive Gmail's copy>". It also supports delete.

Mmmm. That's might also be a solution, but if I forward all the mails, don't they all originate from my own secondary email address then? If that is the case, that's something I wouldn't really want...

On the other hand, that's looking for a solution for something that shouldn't be a problem. I mean, I've got the very same setup working flawlessly here with my own email addresses. I would really like to know why it doesn't work this time...

It's proposing a different solution to the same underlying problem. You chose to pull mail using POP3; I chose to forward email. Perhaps I don't understand the actual problem.

I found a solution. Kind of. One of the solutions Google themselves propose allowing less secure apps to access the account. When I enable this, POP3 access works. If I disable it again, it stops working again. Very strange this seems necessary, especially since everything is happening in the very same google ecosystem.

Forwarding an email does change things like headers etc though doesn't it?

I do the POP3 from a gmail (with my name) to my Google Apps account in my own domain i.e. exactly like you want to do.

If you go to settings Acccounts tab where the POP3 account is set up does view history tell you anything?

I didn't have to adjust that setting I don't think. It could be your problem. I presume it's something like unencrypted POP3 vs encrypted (POP3S or STARTTLS)?

The thing you do,is exactly the same thing I'm doing with my personal email addresses (and which works great) and now my son's email addresses (which doesn't work without the aforementioned fix). Maybe this is because Google has updated their security settings ever since I've setup my own email addresses? I don't know. Also, the history tells me nothing, I've just checked.

I've also tried it with Thunderbird. Here also, I cannot set it up with POP3 without using the "less secure apps" fix.

Google's mailbox forwarding isn't like "I'm going to forward this mail to my mom" forwarding. It's essentially a redirection, so yes, the delivery envelope changes, but all of the headers that you the email recipient or sender care about remain intact.

I have a GoogleApps account with a non-profit org I help out with, which is forwarded to my main personal account. My main gmail account is set up to reply to these forwarded emails using the email address the original email was sent to.

To me, it makes no sense to have one gmail account fetch another gmail account's email across POP3. It adds an unnecessary protocol to the mix, and it's one more set of account credentials you have to maintain to keep the system running -- for no real benefit. If you're playing wholly within the Google email ecosystem, it makes more sense to do the forwarding thing, IMO.

Probably because POP3 protocol sends passwords in cleartext. POP3S doesn't (AFAIK) change this, but you are at least using an SSL connection.
