just make sure to get them back down or it might get stuck in the sled - speaking from personal experience.

Greetings!

Actually, you should not need to bend the tabs to open the top. It should slide. It might be a little tough, or you would have to bend the tabs very slightly, but it should not be a significant amount.

Screwdriver did the trick for me, bend a very small ammount at a time and keep testing the lid. Make sure you have the handle in the correct position to release the lid too !

The best way to do this is not to bend the tabs at all. If you fold the handle out, you should be able to insert a screwdriver into the gap just behind the tabs. With a small amount of leverage, you should be able to coax the lid past the tabs.

Remember to take the fascia off first.

I see a lot of players that come back for repair with mangled cases. On one player, the tabs had been bent to get the unit open a few times and were so weak they were about to fall off.

Refer to Rogers post further down the thread.

This does invalidate the warranty, though.

It doesn't have much in common with a PC.

It might be a computer, but it's not a PC.

You'll still void your warranty.

Erm no, you have to prove you have not had the lid off. As soon as you take the lid off your on your own. You then are at the mercy of Empeg goodwill. For many people Empeg have stretched this goodwill a very long way. I hope it continues

PC's are easy to work inside. Everyone knows how they go together, and they are designed so that common mistakes do not - usually - cause serious damage. This is not the case with the car player. The metalwork is easy to assemble and dissassemble when you've done it twenty times, but the first few times it's easy to bend things, snap things, and cause damage which you may not even notice at first. There are connectors without locating lugs which will cause serious damage should you offset them upon reconnection.

That's why removing the lid invalidates your warranty. If you choose to do so - hopefully having read some of the excellent advice that has been posted to this BBS - then it's your call, and it's at your risk.

Thought I'd make a (very short!!) video to show how I do it. There may be a better method but this works without bending anything too much. I did do a longer video showing the complete removal of the lid but it was unnecessarily long for all the people using modems so I didn't put this up.

You'll find the video here.

Perfect! That's the best way to open the player.

Note that opening is a little easier and reassembly is a lot easier with the Rio version of the product - we made some slight changes to the metalwork.

Cool. I am linking that puppy in the FAQ. Any chance that the URL will stay good for a long time?

Certainly for the forseable future. If anyone wants to mirror it (just in case it does become unavailable for some reason) please feel free to do so. If this community website comes off it could be put into the file repository (if there's going to be one that is).

I've added another short video showing how to get the tabs back over again on reassembly. Same link.
