Sure would be nice if one of you smart guys out there came up with a simple package of a text editor (ANY EDITOR) for empeg....

Currently here's what I've had to do so far....

download the ae deb package
download the slang deb package
download and install cygwin (whatever the hell this is)
locate and download ar for cygwin (?????)
run ar under cygwin to get .tar.gz files from .deb
install slang.tar.gz and ae.tar.gz
hope it all works....

So far I'm stuck at trying to find AR for cygwin .. any tips?

I would love it if someone came up with one .tar.gz package for this ... I don't care if it's VI, Elvis, AE, Pico, or what ... I'll learn it as long as it's easy to install :(

Ummm, vi is already on there as part of the dev package. It is kind of buggy but it does work.

I don't see vi anywhere on this guy, I've got the developer image of 1.0.3 currently...

I managed to install an editor called FTE on my empeg under Frank's Debian environment. I don't know if you can install it under the defautl empeg environment though. Try it if your feeling brave. I got it from here. I installed it using dpkg and it wasn't difficult at all and I have zero Linux experience. It works quite well and does all fancy colour coding stuff as well. I'm pretty sure dpkg is part of the standard empeg developer set anyway.

If not you can grab Frank's debian environment from this link and take it from there...

I hope this helps you in some small way.

Really? My bad then. I have a bunch of stuff that I always add after an upgrade (ftp, telnet, etc) but I didn't think vi was part of it.

Sorry,

Curious as to why you are unpacking the debs on the Windows machine rather than just installing them on the empeg...? Or doesn't the standard empeg developer image have dpkg...? (Can't remember myself as my empeg has all sorts of crap I have installed on it...)

I finally got AE working ... but on a side note ...

Mike, would it be too difficult for you to zip up that package of stuff you put on your empeg after an update?

telnet and ftp were next on my list.

Originally I was using StupidFTP but it was a little too much configuration for each drop of the kernel. I've never attempted installing telnet.

Say, I wonder how hard it would be to get OpenSSH on this thing?

I thought about setting up ssh at one point, but gave up. I think there was going to be too much stuff required. I will see if I can make a .tar of all the stuff I dump onto mine at work tomorrow. It is nothing special though, all of it has been covered here at some point.
