Hi,
I've got my new RioCar Mk2As, and as part of the 'set up proces' I want to make my RioCar have the Waving Tux animation like my empegs have.

I've searched the FAQ and the forum here without much success - I recall a discussion about this some time ago I also looked at the FAQ & RioCar.org and couldn't find it.

Anyway, if someone can point this out to me - I'm sure some of our new RioCar owners may like to see the waving tux animation when they boot their empegs too.

Grab Tony's logo editor from the downloads on RioCar.org. Open it, go to "File, Select your player type". Ensure it says empeg, then do a "File, Delete logos from player"

Thats the easiest way.

Done all that and it works fine.

Can we get this in the FAQ for next time?

It's already in the FAQ. Right here. Been there for months.

You're right Tony,
And I read that section aty least twice before I post *AND* I searched the FAQ for Waving Tux (with no luck).

That last sentence in the FAQ explains it - perhaps we should make a reference to Waving Tux in that sentence as thats what most people change the official boot logo to if they change it at all, that way it would show up in FAQ searches related to waving tux.

I think its good that some of the newer folks here realise that they don't have to live with the Rio animation on start up and can easily change it to the reallly, really cool Waving Tux animation in about 15 seconds.

You guys are going to shoot me, but I just changed my year old (I joined almost exactly a year ago!) empeg to the Rio boot up logo ... just for a change. And I wanted somthing a little less... cartoony for a few weeks.

(heh heh heh.. HTML works now... This could be a bad thing.)

It always has, except in the Off Topic form when it was initially created. I still use the HTML tags for my quotes most of the time instead of UBB code.

"Fill out the form below to post a message on the forum. HTML is enabled. UBBCode is enabled, so you may use UBBCode in your posts"

The one cool thing about UBBCode I've noticed is that if you use the (url) tags, it automatically does the right thing to make the link pop open in a new window.

Woohoo! No more Rio logos in my player! Walking-up-sitting-and-waving tux is way more cool/friendly.

I didn't see a menu option to remove the logo on the outside of the case...

Make sure the Com port is set right in the logo program, and that you have any other devices using a com port turned off (like a modem, or Palm Sync software). Have you been able to do an upgrade on the unit? Also, try connecting with Hyperterminal to see if you can watch the bootup messages on the empeg. This should help to determain if it's a com port problem.

yeah i have no problem connecting, whether for flash upgrade or to start the logo process. i get to the message
-----------------------------------------------
- READY TO BEGIN SENDING DATA -
- -
- The player should reboot and the data -
- transfer should begin automatically. If -
- this doesn't happen within the next few -
- seconds, then do the following: -
- -
- UNPLUG the power from the empeg car player, -
- then PLUG IT IN again to begin the data -
- transfer process. -
- -
- Please do this now. -
-----------------------------------------------

then i cycle power

then i get this:

found empeg unit: entering program mode

Error: Couldn't find manufacturer ID!

Press the Enter key to continue.

i have hyperterminal (as well as secureCRT) but i don't know how to connect with them. i tried a com1 session with HTerminal and it counted up the connected clock but the cursor just hung in the upper left ... nothing happened and it didn't respond when i typed "ls" for example

what's wrong with my empeg?

I've had problems with HyperTerminal wher it won't see the data coming from the empeg if you ``Connect'' before you plug the empeg in. So try clicking connect after you plug in the empeg. I don't have this problem with SecureCRT. But my version of SecureCRT seems to have a problem with sending ZModem in that it's really slow (like 100 Bytes/sec).

Assuming you set the correct options in hyperterminal, then the problem lies with the COM port, the PC's settings, or the cabling. You should be able to see what you're typing at the shell prompt.

If Hyperterminal won't work then the logo editor won't work either, as they use the same communication method.

Try it on a different computer and see if it works.

i have tried it from 3 different PC's with the same result. it DOES recognize the empeg, and it does flash upgrades like a champ, so i'm inclined to think it has nothing to do with the COM port or the cable.

should i give up?

But at the very least Hyperterminal should work.

If you can do full player upgrades but Hypterterminal does not work, I don't see how that can be? I would think it would be the other way around.

Now there is a known problem on some computers with the "download.c" code (which I did not write by the way) where it doesn't work on some systems. Someone else had a version of download.c that was slower because it printed debugging information to the screen, and that slowed it down enough to work on their system. Unfortunately, I am waiting for someone who's having that problem to mess with different timings in download.c, and find out exactly where the delay needs to be inserted, before I make any changes to my copy in the logo editor. I can't reproduce the bug so I can't experiment with it myself.

That's very strange. You are able to receive characters from the player but are not able to send them. Are you absolutely sure your hyperterminal settings are correct? Triple-check that FAQ entry I linked.

And you say that you CAN perform upgrades? Because if you can, that's very VERY strange because the upgrades need to send a lot of characters to the serial port and they have to work.

the only changes i made to default HTerm settings are:

115200 rate
no flow control

my AIM name is joe lira if anyone wants to walk me thru it. maybe there's some Hterm setting i don't know about that is disabling sending chars? i'll go look for a different shareware terminal program and try that out

It won't respond to 'ls' because it's not sat at a shell prompt. Press 'q' followed by Enter to quit the player and bring up the shell prompt.

If that doesn't work, then something else is wrong.

Yeah, but it's not even echoing back the "L" and the "S" to him. Even if those commands did nothing, he should at least be able to see them echo on the screen, and he's not even getting THAT.

And he said that N doesn't work either.

Might want to check you dont have scroll lock on, on your keyboard - it wouldnt recognise anything i typed earlier today and i finally realised this was the problem.

As for the logoedit error, im not sure, but this is the same error i got when my home docking station serial connection was wired incorrectly, so maybe you have a bad serial cable?

Yep, I'm using a version of download.c with the debug code in and running from the command prompt. Can't remeber who was nice enough to put it together, but can go and have a look if you want. It works *most* of the time, whereas the logo editor never works for flashing kernals. Sometimes I have to try it a number of times though, and it almost seems I have to plug in the empeg at just the right moment. Haven't tried playing with logos yet.

I have a Mk 2 empeg, and the PC is an older twin processor PIII 600 (Gigabyte board). I guess I could get really keen and do some testing if you want. Have M$ Visual Studio 6 here, and at least some of the cygwin stuff, but I might need some tips on how to get download.c to compile on a Windoze box.

Careful of your semantics, there. Logo editor works most of the time for most people, from what I gather. I think you meant to say it never works for you.

Do you have the ability to re-compile Download.C and experiment with it? I need someone who can reproduce the problem reliably to locate the fault.

Yeah, sorry Tony, flashing kernels in LogoEditor never works for me.

I shouldn't have toooo many problems compiling download.c here at work, but I haven't tried it yet. There is a small problem regarding time to do it at the mo though as I am in the process of hunting for another job among other things. If I get a chance to look at it I will post back here.
