My gut feeling is that development will continue as long as the empeg guys have players in their cars. Since they actually use the product on a daily basis, they certainly have the motivation to keep up the releases. They've got the code, so it seems likely that whenever one of them decides something should work better and they have a little free time, we all can benefit.

hehehe when its done! ;-) I'm sure development will continue as long as the empeg team has some spare time to work on the player. Did you read the FAQ by any chance? Theres some more infomation on this in there I believe.

The development will also continue because of the shared code base between the empeg-car, and the HSX-109. Plus a few other unannounced projects. If a new audio codec is added to the HSX, it can easially be integrated into the car player.

You mean like the WMA encoder that we all (don't) have?

Nice in theory, but probably thorney when it comes to licensing issues for proprietary formats (like everything other than OGG).

Two issues with Vorbis - first we need a good integer implementation, and second we need to wait and see if there are legal issues looming. It has been suggested that Vorbis may infringe certain patents, and I guess that issue will be decided one way or the other when a major commercial project (i.e. someone worth suing) incorporates the code.
