I was trying to change kernals tonight when it errored during the upgrade (I don't remember the error). I then tried it again and it is now completely hosed. It looks bad. When I look at it through Hyperterminal I get this:

e000 v1.04
Copying kernel...
Calling linux kernel...

empeg-car bootstrap v1.02 20001106 ([email protected])
If there is anyone present who wants to upgrade the flash, let them speak now, or forever hold their peace...it seems not. Let fly the Penguins of Linux!

It then repeats the above text over and over again. I don't know much about Linux admin stuff, but my guess is that the Kernal is trashed. Anything I can do or is sending it in the only option at this point? Lucky I have other Empegs now.

All you gotta do is reapply an .upgrade file (consumer or developer) available at the Empeg downloads section. It'll fix your kernel, re-do your partitions, etc.

It's truly idiot-proof. I hosed my kernel one night and thought the world was going to end. It didn't.

I can't, it doesn't apparently get far enough into the boot sequence for the upgrader to do anything, and the program just stops. I can hear the hard drives when the upgrader is trying to find it, it just reboots over and over again every 1.1 seconds just like it does in Hyperterminal.

The reflasher is in a protected area, so it should always be possible to get to it. You can see it - the bit that says "let fly the penguins of linux".

Are you sure your machine trying to apply the upgrade is ok? You can't run hyperterminal and the upgrader at the same time. Also check for other programs using the com port, eg palm sync.

> Are you sure your machine trying to apply the upgrade is ok?

Yeah, I am upgrading another one of my Empegs right now and it is working fine.

> You can't run hyperterminal and the upgrader at the same time.

I figured. The upgrader is all by itself.

> Also check for other programs using the com port, eg palm sync.

The Empeg is the sole user of any com ports on this computer. Don't even have a modem.

Thanks for the help.

I can't, it doesn't apparently get far enough into the boot sequence for the upgrader to do anything,

1) Remove power from the player.

2) Run the upgrade software.

3) When the upgrade says to apply power to the player, do so.

It should work then.

Maybe you've got a bad HD cable, so the update util isn't able to access the disks. Are your HD's spinning?

YEAH! Doing it exactly in that order worked. I had always plugged it in and then ran the upgrade program and didn't realize the order might make a difference.

Thanks a bunch Tony. You're the man.
