Is there a known problem with the USB connectivity for the Rio Car in Windows XP?

I'm using 2.0b11, which is the first version of Emplode I've installed on XP (I installed XP for the first time last weekend).

When I boot into Win98 on the same machine it works fine.

When I launch Emplode and get to the Select Player window, the icon for "John's empeg on USB" either does not come up at all, or comes up within a few seconds (if it doesn't come up, it will come up the next time if I unplug the USB cable and plug it back in). When it does come up, then I immediately get one of the following error messages when I click on OK:

"There doesn't appear to be a player connected."
or
"The player appears to no longer be connected."

It works fine if I use my COM port, but of course that would take forever to transfer music.

XP does not indicate that there is a problem with the USB driver for the Empeg. When the driver first automatically installed when I plugged in the USB cable, XP asked me if I was sure that I wanted to install the driver, since it was not XP certified, and I of course said Yes. The "Rio Car" item shows up in my Device Manager under the USB Controllers section with no error indications, and the Properties for it says "This device is working properly." The Properties dialog also says that the driver date is 1/3/2001, that the driver file is "c:\windows\system32\drivers\riohd.sys", and that the driver file version is 2.0-beta3 (kind of strange considering that I'm using 2.0 beta 11, but I guess the USB driver hasn't been updated in a while).

I have tried unplugging my USB cable, then removing the Rio Car USB driver, then reinstalling Emplode 2.0b11, and then plugging the USB cable back in and going through the steps of accepting the USB driver when XP asks. But it doesn't help, and neither does rebooting.

I tried going back to 2.0b7, and that has the same problem.

Then I installed the old 1.03 version of Emplode, which uses c:\windows\system32\drivers\empegcar.sys for the USB driver (shows as version 1.02, and also shows as "empeg-car" instead of "rio-car"). And 1.03 detected the player!!! (But it wouldn't let me get very far, since of course it told me that my player had a software version that was too new since I had the 2.0b11 upgrade on it.)

But then when I reinstall 2.0b11, I have the same problem as before (even when I specifically chose the old "empeg-car" driver in Device Manager instead of the newer "rio-car" driver).

Arghhh!!! Any ideas? I guess I'm getting rid of XP if it's not gonna work with my Empeg.

(If anyone's interested, I'm attaching the Emplode debug log files I get for when it can't see my player at all and for when I get each of the two error messages.)

(This is similar to the following thread:
http://empeg.comms.net/php/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=bigs&Number=43119)

(Sorry that the attachment isn't working... I'm not sure why. If anyone wants to see the debug log files just let me know.)

People have been reporting that it doesn't work on USB with Windows XP. This is the most complete report I've seen so far. Thanks. Send me the log files ([email protected]), and I'll stick 'em in the internal bug report.

I have a similar problem:

OS: Windows XP Pro
Version: Emplode v2.00-beta11

When attempting to connect to my Empeg via USB, using Windows XP Pro and Emplode, I recieved "Failed to open database connection (error 0x80040015)" at the "Connecting to player" task part of Synchronising. C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\RIOHD.sys version is 2.0-beta3 dated Jan. 3, 2001. When connecting the USB cable, the driver did install and give a "driver not test on XP / driver not signed" error, which I told XP to ignore.

I am in the same boat, having exactly the same issues on XP. I am a bit disappointed because I'd really like to sync up via USB rather than leaving it on a serial port overnight... ;-)

please let me know as soon as you guys hear anything.

thank you!

Have you thought about trying ethernet?

Also, keep in mind that not everyone has problems with USB on XP. Only some computers have this problem.

Roger, just let me know what logs/reports you want (emplode or otherwise) and I'll have my brother generate everything this week. Can do it with either b7 or b11 as well. I thought you guys had tracked this one down already, otherwise I would have volunteered the info sooner.

I think the only kind of log you CAN get is from Emplode, so I'd say go ahead and have him collect it and see if they need it.

Just send them to me. I'll attach them to the bug report, and then it'll get handled as part of the normal process.

Tony,

Do you know of any fix available to make it work? Ethernet is out of the question as my XP machine happens to be at work, where I don't have an extra place to hook my empeg up to the network (hence the whole reason I tried USB)... I am using Ethernet at home with much success (Windows 2000).

You can check around the BBS, others have been able to get it working intermittently in XP. I don't know how, though. Perhaps it's nothing that you can do, it's simply intermittent.

However, I would suggest that doing large music uploads from your work computer is counterproductive, and you should save that task for your home PC. For just twiddling around with your playlists occasionaly, serial from your work PC should be fine.

Hmm, dang... Well I'll play with it some more, maybe it's a driver thing on the USB controller's part... If it's helpful to the developers or anyone else having this problem, my USB controllers are listed in XP as:

Inter(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
Inter(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444

...I didn't realize this machine had two USB controllers, so I might try the ports in the back of the machine and see if I get any different results as well.

Whoa, you go to work to be productive? Dang, I go to surf the empeg bbs and load up MP3's... Oh, and write code or something when I'm not too busy replying to forum posts =)

I know this sounds like a idiotic "Slap the thing to make it work" type of fix, but I was having the same problems with running 2.0b11 on XP with USB and when it gave me the error message I just rebooted the player(which in turn with XP reboots the USB connection, you get to hear its wonderful sounds again) and then left the player out of standby and it worked fine.

Log file on the way. I didn't bother to trim it, so it's rather huge. Expect a 280KB zip file.

The solution above worked for me. I was getting the same error message while connecting to database via USB and using XP pro.
Went to menu, POWER DOWN. Unplugged unit power, replugged power back in.
Start Emplode. All worked well...

I had the same problem and I tried this driver:
http://www.clubic.com/n/n4861.html
And since I tried this driver there is no problem with sync.

Nope, none of these solutions have worked for me, including the Intel USB 2.0 driver from the previous post (which makes sense, since I'm on an AMD system which uses an ALi USB controller, not an Intel controller.

I'm just gonna stick with Win98 for the time being. I like XP for the stability, but there are too many compatibility problems for now.

We're "upgrading" Roger's PC to Win XP so that might help get some of these issues resolved!

Heh, I put "Windows for Playgroups" on my VMWare box yesterday... The default backdrop looks like the house of four very well known kids program characters... =)

Shame they've removed the windows imaging component that we've been using in NT and 2K... =(

Hi.

Beware of the float effect...

Geez, I was just about posting that very link. Anyway, this post shouldn't go without a link on itself: My internet comics archive and its predecessor might be of interest for some people here, especially as those archives sport a long history, well beyond the limits of other online archives. Actually they contain a total of about 220MB of comics, going back as far as 2000/04/23 on some comics.

cu,
sven

Edit: Changed the URL to the float effect strip so that it points to the version in my archive (which should be available for some more years).

Sweet... That would have been a sweet complement to my archive that had most Dilbert, Over the Hedge and some others from about mid '95 to early '00. All lost in a disk crash and I can't find the #*@%¤/"! backup CD!

I have the same problems, too. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

I have noticed (while connected with HyperTermin) that everytime the connection gets killed, I have tons of this messages on the serial port:

endpoint stall(clear stall on ep4)
endpoint stall(clear stall on ep5)
endpoint stall(clear stall on ep4)
endpoint stall(clear stall on ep5)
...

I don't know if this might be somehow related

btw, I also have a PJB100, which also syncs over USB and it has been working flawlessly.

edit: how comes there are two different usb drivers in c:\windows\system32\drivers (RIOHD.sys and empegCar.sys), which are both identical except for the name?

Marc
