ok - exactly how long can I expect the sync to take? How long does it take to check the disk for errors, or is my unit just acting up? Here's a typical scenerio:
change the properties of ONE song in the play list - started this about 90 minutes ago, still going... emplode window appears crashed to windows...

This is typical. Normally, unit does fine but every once in a while it takes an extremely large amount of time to sync.

Any suggestions? is this something that's being addressed? in my experience, it DOES finish, but sometimes as long as two hours later... This is accross USB, btw, running consumer beta 8a and emplode 8a...

A full fsck of a 2 drive unit may well take an hour or so each drive (absolute maximum). It doesn't do it every time, just about every 30(?) syncs.

We're adding progress reporting to fsck, which will let you know that it's still working and show you how far it has got. emplode will also respond to windows, so you'll be sure that it hasn't gone wrong.

We're always looking at other options, but safety of the data is the prime concern, hence why we perform the fsck.

...would it be possible to have an option (say, click cancel within a second or so) to delay the fsync? it can get annoying when you're expecting it to take 1 second, and it takes 20 minutes; especially while running out the door.. With my luck, it seems to always run it when I'm running out...

I've also noticed that it can take a long time preparing to upload, whilst the actual tune upload is quite quick... (Syncing via usb)

This is a protocol problem - sometimes replies from the unit appear to get lost. We're working on making the protocol more responsive, and the changes will go into the beta releases soon.

Synchronisation is the process that takes place when you hit the Sync button from emplode. It will never happen in the car, unless you plug in a latop!

It'll never fsck in the car, as you don't download to the unit when it's in the car. It's only when the unit is plugged into your PC about to download some tunes.
