Kind of funny (in a sad way) that in all this flurry of animation editors, I forgot the fundamentals 31 is a bugfix release.... No new features this time.

AnimationApplet - attempts read from URL rather than checking unreliable .available()

AnimEdit - looping animated gifs

jEmplode - fixed bug with duplicate detection (ACK!)

jEmplode - fixed bug in deleting from OrderedHashtable

Still getting the database error... Strange that Emplode finds nothing wrong with it. I could try deleting my database files and rebuilding and see if I still get it.. I'll try that tomorrow maybe.

Also still getting the same frozen behavior when dragging and dropping for an import.

Being a programmer sucks don't it? (as he prepares to get five hours of sleep and go to his dead-end programming job...)

Are you running the windows .exe or just double-clicking jemplode20.jar to run this? I'm going to have you turn on debug mode.

If you run it with the .exe file, add
debuglevel=62
to the jEmplode2.lax file (anywhere) This will turn on all but protocol-level debug messages.

If you run it with the jar file, run it instead from the commandline with:

java -Ddebuglevel=62 jemplode2.jar

Log the output from that, download the database from your player, then drag and drop and have it hang, then quit and send me the output log.

I'll try this tonight when I get home. I'm running with the .EXE. Hey is it possible that I could get a speed improvement by using a newer JDK and running the JAR file directly? Sometimes jEmplode seems kinda sluggish.

Sluggish = Java UI ... Installing JDK 1.4 should definitely be a speed improvement though. The next official jEmplode release will likely be with the 1.4 JRE.

Oh, I know it's the Java UI, I just didn't know if 1.4 added any improvements to that UI on the Windoze platform. I love a lot of things about Java, but speed isn't one of them.

1.4 has a totally rewritten architecture for Java 2D that, among other things, allows caching of offscreen images in video memory. Swing definitely is snappier in this version.

But if you do that, won't we go back to the old "it breaks Jemplode for older Macs" argument?

Nah -- My code will only use JDK 1.1 API's, but I'll ship the windows version withe JDK 1.4 virtual machine. Basically, 1.4 is backwards compatible with 1.1, but you just get a bunch of performance enhancements behind the API's in 1.4

Nope -- JDK 1.3.1 is only available for OS X. OS 8 and 9 only have a 1.1 VM available. 1.4 is not out for OS X yet -- though it should be soon.

I've upgraded to v31 from something a couple of weeks old - v25 or so.

I don't like the new move up/down (Ctrl+UP, Ctrl+DOWN) behaviour. It used to be that I could move a track up several places by holding CTRL and tapping the appropriate arrow several times; now it's a real pain to shuffle lots of tracks around. I liked the old behaviour, even if it was somewhat surprising when sorting by anything other than position. It's not even as if you've got rid of the painful flip-to-top-then-back-down issue properly...

BTW, why is the JEmplode icon so small? It looks silly next to other program icons, and barely has enough width for the name:

I didn't even know you could do that before ... uhh .. So what does it do now?

That icon sizing is all done by InstallAnywhere ... I actually have a whole new batch of 128x128 icons for OS X that a friend made, though ... I'll put them up sometime soon.

Why doesn't [image] work as it says in the BBS FAQ?

Wild guess: It doesn't like PNG extensions.

Let's see..

GIF

JPG

PNG
[image]http://johngalt.crosswinds.net/tuximages/tux001.png[/image]

Let's see how that looks..

There ya go. Test complete. PNG will never be a legitimate graphics format for the Internet if server software and browsers don't start supporting it right.

Old behaviour:
  • Start with a playlist containing 8 tracks, named "One", ..."Eight".
  • Select "Five"
  • Hold CTRL
  • Press UP. "Five" is swapped with "Four"; "Five" is still highlighted
  • Press UP. "Five" is swapped with "Three"; "Five" is still highlighted
  • etc.
  • Release CTRL

New behaviour:
  • Start with a playlist containing 8 tracks, named "One", ..."Eight".
  • Select "Five"
  • Hold CTRL
  • Press UP. "Five" is swapped with "Four"; no item is now highlighted; focus is on "Four"
  • Release CTRL
  • Press UP. "Five" is now selected
  • Hold CTRL
  • Press UP. "Five" is swapped with "Three"; no item is now highlighted; focus is on "Three"
  • Release CTRL
  • etc

Because the moved item has lost the highlight and the focus, it's no longer possible to quickly move items a long way.

I get the same new behaviour using the toolbar buttons; I never tried these with the older version.

Possibly related: in older versions, if several contiguous items were selected, they all moved together with CTRL-UP etc; now only one of them moves.

Weird ... I didn't touch any of this code ... I guess other changes caused some trickle-down effect with that ... I'll get it fixed back up to the way it used to work.

That's annoying - the server certainly knows that it's image/png:

$ lynx -head -dump "http://empeg.comms.net/files/80014-jemplode.png"
HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 19:06:59 GMT

ETag: "18a33-145e-3c9785ca"
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 5214
Content-Type: image/png

But it's not happy to get it right when uploading...

Start with a long playlist (long enough that you need to scroll down a page or two to see it all. Select the last item. Move it up one place.

Observe that the display briefly flashes to display the top page (actually now it stays on the top page until you press an arrow key, but it used to move back to where the selection is - I guess this is a side-effect of losing the selection). In the old version where multiple moves worked, this slowed things down a lot - something like 4 or 5 times at a guess. In the current version, I'm probably limited by my keyboard skills, because of having to re-select the item (did you ever play Daley Thompson's Decathlon on a rubber-key Spectrum? You'll know what I mean if you do).

I don't think it has anything to do with uploading. I think it's the BBS tag language parser that's the culprit.

I tend to reorder a lot, particularly when creating "mood" or "greatest hits" playlists. Generally with the keyboard rather than the toolbar buttons, though. (I am trying to train myself to use the toolbar for quicker copy/paste, but as my colleagues will attest, I don't come from a GUI background and I tend to prefer typing to mousing.)

Anyway, the jump-to-top issue has been there since forever (like, JE 1.x), so it's definitely not a regression. Actually, I just assumed you were aware of it - assumptions are always dangerous things!

Thanks for your quick responses, too.

I don't know if this is possible, but can we at least get a subset of HTML back? img tags and a href would be nice, along with b, i and a few other text formatting. I'm seeing more problems due to UBBCode then I ever did with people using HTML.

Hey Mike,

I downloaded the 20b11 release of Jemplode for Win32 with the VM included in the download. If I want to upgrade to the 1.4 VM without waiting for your next installer, is it as simple as downloading the latest from the Sun site and installing it? Or, would I have to somehow reconfigure things?

I use 1.4 on my machine .. If you want to keep using the .exe launcher, I have not tried it, but if you install 1.4, you can just double-click on jemplode20.jar to run it. You can try just replacing the jre directory that gets installed into the program files\jemplode directory with a 1.4 JRE... I don't know how fussy InstallAnywhere will be about its VM... Give it a shot.

Ooh, it didn't like that. I replaced the contents of the jre directory in c:\program files\jemplode 2.0 with the stuff from the jre directory in the 1.4 installation. Running the executable caused it to not even start. It pops up a dialog saying it couldn't load jvm.dl. I didn't pursue that avenue any farther.

I suppose if I knew a little more, I could leave my installation intact and just modify the jemplode.lax file to point to the right VM. I think I'll just stick with double clicking the jar file directly, though, which presumably is launching the 1.4 VM.

One other question: On my Mac OS X machine, I can't double-click the jar file directly. Presumably, there's no identifiable main class for the OS to launch it with. Is it worth it for you to modify the jar to make it that much easier to run in OS X? Or, is it already too easy to grab your .app file or build your own with MRJAppBuilder?

Really? This is a recent problem then, because I used to run it like this on my OS X box all the time ... In the meantime, you can grab the OS X wrapper that is on jempeg.org and just replace jemplode20.jar inside the app bundle (it's in something like /Resources/Java or something inside the bundle)

Double clicking on the JAR works fine on my OS X machine! I do have the develper tools installed - don't know if that would make a difference
