In reply to:
When it's done.
Only boring software is ever "done". I doubt the player software will ever be done, but perhaps "ready" soon.
Now, are you hinting that there isn't a next beta release, or would I be reading too much into that?

What a brilliant response(inside joke or not)..
When do you think it will be "done"?

Don't expect anything more exciting than bug fixes in the next release. Getting it out is currently a matter of finding the time to build a full release, as we're all very loaded down with another project at the moment. I'll see if I can bribe Mike to do the job one evening.

Is one of the reasons that beta's aren't released more often because you don't want your developers swamped with bug reports for issues that are already "known" but still a few pages down on the "to do" list? I could see how releasing a beta would create more work for you. How about if we all promise to not report any bugs!

This makes me laugh. I've been really busy and away from this forum for a very long time (probably almost a year), and the software is still a beta! I'm not annoyed, I find it quite amusing, but it would be nice if there was some idea on the possible full non-beta release. Could we maybe pin it down to a year? Say, before 2005 ?
All in good jest,
Andy

Erm, no, version 2 of the software is in Beta. Version 1.03 is considered stable and has been available for a long time.
I would point out that this "Beta" program has actually seen dozens of new features added, and in practice I couldn't say for sure if we will ever declare a non beta version 2 release. This is the easiest way to continue to release software for a product which has no official software development schedule.

What a suspicious lot you all are. I have an Empeg that follows me worldwide on trains, planes, cars and motorhomes. It has the latest beta, which is fantastic in its functionality and consolidates its position as a world leader. I just think I'm that lucky to have got one, can't understand how in Hades any rational business could discontinue it, and will be a happy man even if I never see another update.

I love my player so much that if the update only consisted on a re-naming of a visual, even one I didn't use often - I'd be excited. I'm certainly not demanding one, or in need of one. I've been amazed at every release I have been around for: 1.02, 1.03 and the 2.0 betas.

I just want to see the final release, in the hope that they'll then be able to start work on the next RioReceiver release.

Rob,
as I mentioned before, I wasn't having a go at you, I know you lot are very busy and have other priorities.
1.03 is indeed stable, but it also doesn't have all of the nice features fo the 2.0 beta, and it is this that I (and many others) have been waiting for. It is all very well saying that new features are added all the time, that is appreciated, but there are users (and not just me) who do not want to risk using a beta on their beloved machine and mp3 collection. I'm sure you can appreciate this. So, for the people who do not like using betas, I think you can agree that it has been, and I'm sure it will continue to be, a very long time before we get to use the nice functionality of 2.0.
I have read here that the next beta will mainly be bug fixes, maybe I should take a risk with this one if the software is unlikely to ever go non-beta? Since I have been away, there is something you have written which confuses me slightly. You say that the software has no official development schedule. I was under the impression that this software was also being used on another product which would ensure it's update. Has this changed?
Cheers,
Andy

I've been running Beta11 for months without any issues. I really should update to Beta13, though! We'll try to get that one out to the world at large before much longer.
Current products that use the same codebase are Rio Receiver and Rio Central. This list will expand in future, and the car player will continue to benefit. Recently, for example, we completely re-wrote the audio layer into a new modular filter network architecture which creates some very exciting possibilities for the future.
2.0 is branched from the main trunk, however, to give us a chance of getting something stable enough to release. When that has happened we can look at bringing in some of the new stuff.

read: plug-ins?
All empeg's and RioCar's were sold with 1.01 and no promise of future software. Everything else is icing on the cake. Maaaaybe the early adopters could say that they were told they were going to get thermometer based features, but HiJack took care of that.
Don't be afraid of 2.00b11. It is quite stable and gives you WMA and lets you install HiJack.

I want beta 13! I want it now! Me! Me!.....Me too!
Seriously though - I think it's great that software development is continuing on an EOL product, and as far as I'm concerned, 2.0beta11 is better than 1.01in every way. The label beta could in reality be taken off IMO. It certainly has more quality than Released versions of some well known OS's.

Thanks
BTW, I notice from the download site that the list of Windows versions that Emplode supports does not include XP. Is this just because nobody has updated the web page, or it genuinely doesn't work with XP?
Cheers,
Andy

It does work with XP, but the USB has bugs, its not very serious, I still use it just every now and then the synch wont complete, so I have to pull out the usb cord to reset it. I dont beleive there are any problems using ethernet with XP though

Yeah, XP has a re-written USB module. Pretty much every USB device I have does not work properly on XP. Only simple stuff like mice and joysticks work ok for me.
Fine with me though as I use Ethernet.
Cheers,
Andy

Holy Cow!!
Just spent tonight putting on beta 11 and Highjack. Glad you lot persuaded me, this stuff is awesome!
Got a couple of questions though (sorry if these have been covered before).
1) is there a shell script that gets run automatically when the machine boots? I'd like to add a few auto run things (like the telnet daemon etc)
2) Is Jemplode the only way to upload animated logos?
3) Is there anywhere that lists the additional features between 1.03 and 2.0?
4) Is there a pre-compiled version of vi (or vim) that I can just drop into the bin directory?
5) I wondered if its possible to have a random visualisation shown (say change every 30 seconds etc). I've searched the forum and all I've found is an old thread about v1.0 beta 10 and a wish list item. Did this ever get done? I see in config.ini there is something to do with favourate visualisations.
Thanks guys

2) Is Jemplode the only way to upload animated logos?
Its the easiest way, but i'm sure someone could hack some other method. Keep in mind that you need the hijack kernel installed to do this. Jemplode has some cool features, you should check it out.
3) Is there anywhere that lists the additional features between 1.03 and 2.0?
I dont think so. Maybe in the faq? Reading the release notes gives a general idea. A official manual will be available when it reaches 2.0 final.
5) I wondered if its possible to have a random visualisation shown (say change every 30 seconds etc). I've searched the forum and all I've found is an old thread about v1.0 beta 10 and a wish list item. Did this ever get done? There are various options for changing visuals under the visuals menu. Change after every song, etc.

Of course we are all missing the obvious here.
If time if the problem, the pursuasion is needed, therefore the application of copious quantities of beer is bound help.
Rob, where do we send the keg?
