I was just looking at pictures of the MK2, I noticed that there is a security slot labled on the pictures. What actualy is this.

It's a laptop style slot. A small metal loop snaps in here, then you can run a cable and lock through.

It's been mentioned on the board that this is intended primarily for trade show use -- in most cases, once you snap in the D-ring loop, it's there to stay.

I'm curious whether the security loop can be used to afix the unit permanantly to the car, once a wireless link is in place. (To prevent thieves I suppose). Rob, what do you think?

I know it's a bit late for the Mk2, but I would LOVE some sort of car locking mechanism. Someone a while back mentioned the idea of some solenoids that locked it in the car until you went through an unlocking procedure to release them. This was a very good idea.

I have a convertible, you see. :)

I would think a software lock could be easily implemented into it. Like if power is disonnected a series of steps to re-activate it. Locking into the cradle may just cause a theif to destroy your dash trying to get it out (I had this happen on a 1970 Pontiac Lemans Convert a few years back). If they want it, they'll take it. One way or another.

I fitted a small loop and ignition controlled solenoid to lock the unit in the dash if the ignition was turned off. I discussed it in an earlier thread, but given the volume of traffic on the board I can no longer find it.

To tell you the truth, it got to be a pain; and I am pretty convinced (after seeing a few Police videos) that if a regular thief wants to steal your car/empeg, then there will be very little to stop him. Solution: remove the unit each time you leave the car, even in the garage.

That's not such a great idea. The rotating face Kenwood stereos do this, and I've seen the results to both stereo and dash after thieves attempted to extract them on two occassions. They didn't get the stereo, but neither was it of much further use to the owner.

Removing the stereo from the car in any doubtful security situation is the only way to be totally confident.

Yeah - just make sure the thief doesn't mug you on the way out of the car

I had 3 of those Kenwood 'mask' systems stolen in 6 months before I got my empeg.

Maybe this has something to do with working a stone's throw from Arsenal ;-)
