I'm mildly confused - probably because I haven't been keeping up.
Do these replace the need for a lens - i.e., are they inserted instead of a coloured/smoked lens? Or do they supplement an existing lens?
Many thanks,
A.

I, too, am a little confused. What are the differences between your normal lenses and gel lenses.
Oh, and BTW, where did you purchase the transluscent buttons for the unit (that are lit in shots on your page)?

On the same page with those lit shots are two links to the lit-buttons site. As well as at the top of this page.
And he actually doesn't have any lit buttons, those shots are of my player anyway.

Heh.
Just after I posted, I saw the link to the buttons page (maintained by some other fella). I may have to splurge on those later.
In the meantime, I'm still in awe of the wonders of the hijack kernel. The HTTP and FTP servers make ALL of the difference! Being able to control the music played from any location that has access to HTTP is just totally unbelievably inconceivably fricking cool!

Brian is by no means just "some other fella". Do you have any idea how much work he must have gone to in order to figure out the button hack and do those incredible castings? I'm still in awe of it. Sometimes I just sit and stare at how cool the backlit buttons look. (I have to look up when I hear the thump-thump-thump of the road reflectors under my wheels, though.)
I'm still in awe of the wonders of the hijack kernel.
You too, huh?
In fact, I'm in awe of all the work that everyone has done for this little player. From Darkstorm's lenses, to Brian's buttons, to Hijack (and Displayserver before it), to Jemplode... all of the hacks and customizations for this thing just totally blow me away.
The HTTP and FTP servers make ALL of the difference!
Have you tried CharcoalGray99's XML pages for Hijack? It gets even better!

Speaking of Brian do you know if he is still making buttons? I asked to be put on his list a long while back and haven't heard anything since. I don't want to harass him since he might be slowly slogging through his list of people who want the buttons. It just seems that he has stopped - or he has something much more important going on his life which is quite understandable.

I wasn't disparaging Brian's work. I simply couldn't recall his name having only glanced at his website.
I'll have to looking into these XML pages that you mention. I'm thinking that this is some sort of slicker web-based interface to Hijack?

Yes. Found here, and looks like this:
And by the way, that's a live display, with working buttons and a working remote.
Just use FTP to put the files (in the proper folder structure) into the root directory of a hijack-enabled player and you're good to go.

Yup. I did a search of the forums and found it. I'll install it this evening when I get home.
XML/XSL is nice that way. The fellow who modified the kernel to produce Hijack ought to be thanked for having the foresight to allow it to output XML and apply a user-specified style sheet.

Well, sure, I could see that. As a coder myself, I'd just as soon barf out some HTML than XML that would still require the application of a style sheet. XML/XSL can be a pain in the tuckus.

yep.. if they put those in minnesota, the snow plows would scrape them all up in a day.
I did see a design for reflective bumps for cold-climate.. they were spring-loaded so they would get shoved down into the pavement when run over.. and popup afterwards. also had a nifty relfector that would change color when it got iced over.. so you knew if the ice was bad or not.

Evan,
I think you'll need to put a notify=1 line into config.ini
Check the FAQ for details.

In my town, they do something much simpler. The reflectors are mounted in little "troughs" in the road so that a snowplow can go over the top of them without ripping them up. The troughs are designed so that you can still see them while you're driving.

Not only do they spring down when run over but when they go down an eyelid wipes the little reflective eyes so evey time you run over one you clean it.
I saw a real cool thing in south england little reflectors with a small circuit in it so that a solar panal charges a battery and then at night when a headlight sticks the cats eye a small intense led switchs on lighting up the cats eye really well but the cool thing is it stays on for a few seconds though so you have a trail of lights following you.

This is correct, I think the section is [output].
CharcoalGray99... Perhaps a future release of the XML files could make it so that the default text is, instead of a hyphen, "Need [output] notify=1 in config.ini"?

Aside from the vastly improved amount of colors.

They're putting lit cats' eyes in a main road here. They'll change colour according to whether the traffic will be peak hour or not to make an extra lane available. Light sensitive cats' eyes sound pretty cool though.

Every trip to CA reminds me of how well Colorado does on maintaining roads. Potholes created from a huge rain storm on minor streets are usually fixed in days, and the major ones get fixed in a day or two at most.
Highway expansion is another area completly though. I think the 3 lane expansion for the Springs will probably take 10-15 years to complete, for 9-10 miles of highway.

Hi,
I made some mods a few weeks ago to CharcoalGray99.
1. Didn't like everything sitting in / so fixed that. I keep it all in /var/empeg/khttpd with a single index.html in my root.
2. Removed the 'Playlists' link and inserted them permanently into the middle section which looked kinda empty at the time. Also added a 'bitrate' column to the playlist table.
3. Added a "need notify=1" feature to the now playing thingie if it couldn't get the info from empeg_notify.
4. Made the now playing thingie auto refresh every second. Timeout is easily changable.
5. Added an HTML link. Handy in case viewed in a non patched IE.
Think that's all I changed. Screenshot attached.
Anyone want this?
Regards,
Aragon

Believe it or not, I actually ran into a guy who works at a company that makes these electronic reflectors. They come in a multitude of varieties and can be custom made to spec. The most interesting ones include the one with a little battery in it with a solar cell that trickle charges during the day, and a photo sensor to turn on at night and light up. There is one with a "fog" sensor with two metal things sticking out the side about 1mm. When it gets foggy they start blinking or whatever. And there are ones that are run on plain old batteries and can function for 6 years straight. Some of them are meant to be stuck permanantly, some are deployed with rubber bottoms during hazard situations. They're pretty cool. I can probably get one from them for $11 or so. They're probably a bit cheaper in bulk, but still not as cheap as plain old plastic of course.

An old old Bill Cosby stand up routine talked about the "hiccups" in the road. They helped both the drunk and the sober drivers. The sober would know they fell asleep when they heard those, and the drunks knew they went off the road when the thump-thump-thump stopped.
Of course PC-ness makes it un-funny to many now days...

I might see if I can have a play with this over the weekend. No promises mind, I do lots of XSLT with MSXML 3.0, but I don't know how different the Mozilla parser is. In theory it should just work, but we all know about Netscape's and Microsoft's ability to read a standard the same way...

Hi,
Sorry for taking so long to respond.
I've zipped up my changes and it's available for download from http://root.nis.za/misc/cgxslv1.2+aragon.zip .
The installation is a little different. You'll need to create a 'khttpd' directory in /empeg. Here you need to upload the images directory, default.css, default.xsl, empeg_notify.html, ftp.html, and jscript.js. Be careful not to overwrite your existing jscript.js with mine as I've removed a lot of the default menu items which you might want to keep. You'll need to edit mine to your liking (the old jscript.js won't work correctly). The last file is index.html that, ideally, should be placed in your root.
You'll also need to add khttpd_style=/empeg/khttpd/default.xsl to the [hijack] block of your config.ini.
When I made the changes I think I removed the links on the left that point to the myDirectories shortcuts. Sorry guys, if you like this you'll have to copy/paste it back from the original code . It should be in the original default.xsl.

Aragon

Mmm.. it would be really great if you could find the time. I'd kinda like to see how all of this works someday.
Thanks

Hi Mark,
Strange. I thought XML was supposed to be one up on HTML wrt standards. I had to install Microsoft's XML addon to get IE 5.5 parsing XML. Is Mozilla's support builtin?
I don't have Mozilla, but with a screen shot I can try spot what needs fixing.

Yeah, mozilla has XML built-in.
And they claim to follow the XML standard very closely.
Perhaps "common practice" does NOT follow the standard as well..
The mozilla folks can be pretty ana% when it comes to "following standards at all costs". Which is why I cannot access my online banking, or Ingram Micro account, using Mozilla. Ugh.

IE enjoys supporting a pre 1.0 XML standard, while Mozilla only supports the 1.0 standard. Most people learned XML with all the pre 1.0 code standard, and unfortunatly quite a bit was changed in 1.0.
IE supports 1.0, so it's just a matter of getting the programmers to stop being lazy about it and learn the changes. Unfortunatly I don't have a huge grasp on XML client side yet, so I can't do much for the interface on the player. All my XML experience is on parsing it in PHP, then turning it into standard HTML for the client.

Thanks for pointing out the charcoal grey stylesheet. It was trivial to install, but I can't get the "Now Playing" thing to work at all, no matter what I try. Right now, I have, under my [hijack] section in config.ini, the following:
[hijack]
extmute_on=0x74
extmute_off=0x73
;@WORK disable_emplode=1
;@WORK kftpd_password=empeg
kftpd_show_dotfiles=1
khttpd_files=0
khttpd_dirs=0
khttpd_playlists=1
khttpd_commands=1
time_offset=-480
[output]
notify=1
[ir_translate]
PopUp0=Shuffle,Repeat,Info,Visual,SelectMode,Clock,Detail
KnobLeft=KnobLeft.U,Info.N,null
KnobRight=KnobRight.U,Visual+.N,null
74=Auxiliary
73=Player
;Kenwood RC-500 Remote
B94613=Ok
B9460D=Cancel
B9460C=Search
B9460A.LN=Track-
B9460B.LN=Track+
B94616=Shuffle
B9460F=Info
I still don't see anything under "Now Playing". Also, I don't know if this is related, but I am getting some wierd behavior with the virtual remote function. It seems to act as if I am holding down each button. For example, when I reveal the remote window, and click the Menu/OK button, it goes to the hijack menu as if I had held it down.
Oops...just checked whether it's a browser bug, and the button problem appears to be Mozilla-related...however, IE still doesnt reveal anything under "Now Playing".
Sorry for making this thread fall even more off topic.

In reply to:
khttpd_files=0
khttpd_dirs=0
If I add these lines to my config, the Now Playing section stops working - if I remove them, it works again. I imagine this is because the page is looking in the 'proc' dir (?) which stores information on playlists, song id's, time into song, etc.
HTH,
A.

Thanks for the tip...now it works like a charm.
I'm really starting to like Mozilla, yet it just doesn't seem to work properly with this interface. The most obvious thing is that the display in the upper right corner doesn't automatically update. After using the browser for a week or so, I'm already finding the tabbed browsing and the cookie/password management stuff indispensable. Anyone try this XML stylesheet using Opera?
