Final call for a plug and the necessary pins to mate with a empeg for a home built sled. See the thread here for details - particularly my post near the end

It looks like the complete harness thing won't happen due to a lack of interest. I want to close things off by the end of the coming weekend. There will still be a lead time of 4-6 weeks after I order too and the cost is more likely to be $US15 + shipping after I take into account shipping to my address and the small order surcharge spread across the number of people ordering.

I will find out shipping prices tomorrow hopefully. Currently I am looking at the US, Belgium, NZ and Sweden which should give a fair idea of costs.

When you email don't forget to let me know which country you are in. I should be able to accept Paypal or if you're in Australia direct transfers should be OK.

I'll take 2.
Would like wired if more people ask for them, else the connector anyway.

Direct emails please. Makes it much easier for me to add to the spreadsheet. I tried adding the thread as Favourite figuring the BBS would email when people reply but it doesn't seem to.

Also if you have some funky name as your email reply to please tell me your real name.

justinlarsen I have you down for 1
and cookie_ARM for 2 plus harness if I do it. Either way you're up for connectors. Need a name, an email address and location please.

People, without an email address, I may not count you in. PMs through the board become a nuisance when trying to mail a large group at once. I will ensure your address does not become public in anyway if you are worried about SPAM and such.

is your plan to order enough pins to re-create the plugs with all four RCA outs? just like the OEM unit?

Yes. For each connector you ask for you will get 22 signal pins and 2 power pins. Some may not be used but you'll have them if you do need them later.

Okay, can someone explain what these things are for? I read the thread but I'm unclear as to whether you're trying to build these for home or car use. What connectors are going to be on this thing? I couldn't discern exactly what you're ordering from the multitude of posts in the other thread.

I hope to some day soon build a rack mount home docking station for my Empeg, would this be something that would help me out? If so I'm interested.

It is the connector found on the sled which plugs in to the empeg when docked. I am not providing a sled in anyway. That's up to you.

Depending on demand I was also looking at providing the connectors with most of the wiring. Basically the same as the original sled minus the ISO connector, tuner connector and most probably the microphone socket. It would have the fuse holder, the DB9, the power filter and all 6 RCA jacks.

I am finding decent power filters hard to come by easily and as such I may leave them off - will make the harness much cheaper. I have not committed to harnesses yet. If I don't do the harnesses, you'll get 24 bits of metal (the terminals) and 1 bit of plastic (the plug).

Answering your questions directly

- They are for home OR car use. Whatever you want. Probably more aimed at people who want to simply pull their empeg out of the car, walk into the living room and slide it in and have it all connected up to their stereo.

- This would most definitely help you if you want to build a rack mount home docking station.

You still need some sort of sled/cradle though.

If you don't do the full harness, I am willing to do it for however wants it done (including more special versions, like a harness that connects to and powers a Garmin GPS, which could be used to replace the original harness in the car sled). I would do it at own cost + postage + a little fee, depending on the individual amount of work needed, but generally, about 10$ for an original harness and about 15$ for an inidividual one. Mind you, this might just as well sum up to more than an original sled.
Contact me directly via [email protected], if you want me to do this for you. You will also need to arrange that Christian (Shonky) sends your material to me instead of you (which might save some postage, as he could combine that with any other materials sent to me for others or me).

I had mentioned this some time ago, but I'll mention it again here because it's very relevant to this thread.

With one of these an additional sled plugs, you can very likely, and very inexpensively, make your own additional sled to use for moving your Empeg to another car.

Years ago, when most radios were pull-outs, it was very common for them to get stolen from trunks, under the seat, etc., leaving the car owner with an orphaned sled. When the car owner bought a new radio (with its own sled), the car stereo installers would often stockpile these old orphaned sleds in case they needed to use them for parts. I was in the business at that time which is how I know this.

Jump ahead to 2002. Many car stereo installation bays still have a handful of old sleds lying around, which at this point have no value at all (since current units have detachable faces instead). If you ask, and if he has any, the installer will probably give you a few or charge a couple of bucks for them. If you can't find one that way, buy an old junky pull-out at a pawn shop, junkyard, etc. for $10 or $20 and just use its sled.

I bought four old sleds of various brands from two local car stereo places for $20 total. Of the four, three were approximately the right size for an Empeg (the size is fairly standard, but one sled was too shallow). I then bought a couple of extra wiring looms from Empeg (at that time they were still available). It took only minor fabrication to replace the Kenwood, Sony, etc. sled plugs on these orphaned sleds with the Empeg sled plugs. (You have to do a bit of drilling or bracketing because they must line up just right, but it's not hard, and need not be pretty since it will be behind the dash.) I also drilled some holes in the top of the sleds to match the ventilation holes in the Empeg.

Presto - a cheap spare sled! Now I can move my Empeg from car to car, for only the cost of an extra sled plug plus $5 and about half an hour of labor.

That said, I will take 2 sled plugs. Not trusting myself to wiring/soldering (I am all thumbs), I would need them to be full harnesses. But, sInce smu has been so gracious as to offer to do this assembly at low cost assuming that indeed full harnesses are not going to be offered through the group buy, then I'll take him up on that, with much appreciation.

As there's a 4-6 week wait from ordering the sockets to them arriving with him, I imagine that if it is not, it might be a while before enough interest rebuilds to make another order worthwhile.

Initially yes it is a one time event. The 4-6 week lead time being the main reason. If there is enough demand again, I might do a second run assuming this run goes OK.

There has been enough interest in harnesses (about half want them) so that I will be doing them now. I still need to find a suitable inline power filter though for a reasonable price. Can anyone help here?

One more thing, smu has offered custom harnesses if you want them for a slight premium in price. I am only doing one type of harness which will be as complete and as close to the original. If smu keeps his offer open, I will give him the option of getting the parts like RCAs etc from me with the plug but not soldered/crimped together.

I'm finding nearly impossible at the moment to source a suitable inline power filter.

At the moment it's looking around US$14 for connector and US$15 for the harness + shipping. The expensive bit in the harness at the moment is the filter which is about half the harness cost.

Would you be able to build a sled for others who don't have a clue what they're doing in these kinds of projects (like myself)? That might be very helpful now that the Empeg store is closed.

Sorry I am not investigating making a sled yet (if I even do it all). I have both an empeg sled that was missing the fold and a sled from an old (Kenwood I think) sled the empeg fits in perfectly.

A sled is not an off the shelf item. Rather it is a custom made item and would require a large run to make it worthwhile.

BTW: I am still taking any requests and will do for a few days yet. I kinda said last call to get people into action but I am letting it run a bit longer also since I am still getting requests.

Yes, I keep my offer open. Haven't had a single request for a customized harness yet though.

Anyway, what kind of "power filter" are you looking for? Really a filter, or just a fuse? In either case: What specification are you looking for? I could check my sources and see which type and price I can get.

Well I'm looking for bascially what is fitted to the empeg harness. It is a filter and fuse holder combined. Pretty much every head unit you see has something along these lines. My Alpine HU has a separate 3AG fuse holder and a power filter which is basically a 1 winding transformer to give a large amount of inductance. I don't have a spec other than it must be able to handle up to 3A given that's what the standard fuse is.

I don't mind having the fuseholder separate to the filter, but I can't even find the filters. Autoleads supplied the original empeg one, but I can't find it on their website and they only seem interested in Europe.

The fact that they are mainly interested in the european market shouldn't be much of a problem: I could order it there and send it right over to you.
That would require that they actually can supply it. An order number or exact name/specification would help.

I had a close look at mine and that was how I found out it was an Autoleads product. I didn't notice a product code of any sort. I'd have to pull my dash apart again to have another look. Perhaps someone with an uninstalled sled could have a look?

OR Can the empeg guys tell us what the part number is? The Autoleads website doesn't seem to feature any products with this particular fuseholder/filter in them.

Currently the quantity would be about 25. I will post a web page in the next day or two listing everyone's requests. That may increase the numbers but I don't think we'll get to 50 at the current rate... I have requests for 64 plugs. A lot of people don't mention if they want the harness so I have for the moment assumed not.

Hi.

Well, the thing on the empeg harness is just a black box containing a standard car fuse 3A, on the outside, all one can see is the Autoleads label and "3A" on the fuse cover. I can see no other markings. I also can't see a way to open it so much as to check the actual filter.
Anyone from empeg being able to comment on this? I couldn't find anything like it on the autoleads web pages.

OK I have sent a final email with prices/postage and details etc to everyone on my list. The current list is here

If you're not here you're not on my list...

The details are as follows....

In reply to:

Sorry for the delay guys but I'm about to order the connectors.

This page lists the current requests. It's only on a permanent
56k dial up so be gentle please

http://www.pdd.edmi.com.au/empegconnectors.html

Prices are a little rough but will be within a dollar. If you
want to change let me know and I will update the above page
with your new cost. I have basically done everything to the
cent and rounded up to the dollar since everyone has something
different.

Rough Prices:
Standard connector with all 24 pins is US$13 or A$22

Connector with harness is the cost of one connector + US$18 or A$30
A harness will consist of
Front RCA preamp out connectors
Rear RCA preamp out connectors
Aux In RCA preamp in connectors
3AG fuse holder with 3A fuse in the battery line
DB9 Serial port connector
Labelled power/mute/headlight wiring (with colours as close as
possible to original)

A harness will be missing:
Microphone connector
Tuner connector
ISO connector
Noise Filter

Reasoning: The Microphone connector isn't used by anything. I
assume anyone who has a spare tuner will already have a sled
and apparently Patrick's tuners are coming with flying leads
so a connector is your own choice. If you are building a tuner
you should be able to get a suitable plug and socket. The ISO
connector doesn't seem to be used that much. I couldn't source
a suitable noise filter. All unused pins for the tuner and the mic
connector will be packed loosely so if you wish to add them your
self you will be able to.

If you want extra pins tell me and I'll punch it into the spread
sheet and update the page. That's the easiest way to do it. The pins
are about US40c / A75c each. I am keeping it to whole dollar values

World Postage (inc NZ):
US$5 for up to 3 connectors (w/o harnesses)
US$7 per 1 connector with a harness

Aus Postage
A$5 for up to 3 connectors (w/o harnesses)
A$5 per connecter with harness

I am not initially taking money yet however if you wish to
pay up front it would be greatly appreciated. I will ship
in order of payment which is relavent for the harnesses.
Paypal ([email protected]) is the only method
I can easily accept outside Australia. Within Australia
I can take a direct debit (contact me for details). That's
why I have the A$ and the US$ prices.

Please check your details on the page and let me know if anything
seems wrong or you wish to change something. People with a ???
could you please clarify if I have guessed correctly.

Again sorry for the delay.
