I'd really like to see an option to output the current song title and artist onto the serial line from the empeg.

I noticed that in the TT the main display board has a two line text output, which from the factory stereo displays the frequency and/or cd number/track number.

It would be awesome to get this to display the artist/title from the empeg.

I'm guessing that this would require a PIC interface between the serial and the input for the display (which is common on the TT, A4, A3, Golf, and SEAT cars - so a large audience for this!).

So, my wish is twofold:

1. Get the artist/track out on the serial port. (Can't see me helping here!).
2. Get someone to work out what we need to do to integrate this with the display panel. (Oh man I would lurve to help out here.!)

Paul.

I've got the same thing on my Peugeot 406, mod. 2000.

There's a factory tapedeck controlled via buttons direct on the unit or with a steering wheel command stick and with a multifunction display in the dash (Displays temperature, time, date and radio and tape controls if switched on).

I already tried to figure out how the control-stick works and for details of the tapedeck (It has an ISO-connector which seems to control the controler-stick and the display, too). The only thing I got is something like an electronic-plan how the display and the control-stick are controlled and integrated. As I can see it's something like very specific and nonstandarized communication.
There's something like a central unit ( named 8511) and the display and the stick are somehow connected to it. and there is another thing (called 8500) connected to the same line of the central unit which make the connection to the radio but not directly but over something like a decoder.

This information is very poor but I didn't get anything more and I don't really know what I should do with it. I could guess that this is something equivalent to a serial connection but I don't know. It could be something else, too. And I don't want to blow up the car's electronic just because I'd like to connect the control stick - and if possible the display, too.

I think in the audi and the vw's it's something simmilar. Anyone out there who knows?

I'll give my Audi people a call, but in the meantime this website might help:

Cheers,

Paul.

Big John already successfully made up a connection of a peugeot controler stick to the empeg (via something like a serial converter) but as I asked him he said he doesn't know if his controller stick is familiar with mine.
He didn't say anything about the display board. I think his model (306) doesn't have one.

John - if you read this - any comments?

Additional:

I think there are some other car-brands which have displays similar to the vw/audi, peugeot (what's about citroen and other french manufactorers?)

This posts should better be in Technical Thread

Opel/Vauxhall & various other generic GM brands also use this.

So anyone any ideas on how it works and how to (physical) link to the empeg? (ignoring the availability of some text information on the serial port of the empeg) ?

As far as I know the original in dash display for the Opel was developed by Blaupunkt.

... and I think it's something nonstandard at all, isn't it?

Car's from my knowledeg use an implimentation of the CAN Bus for instrumentation communication, but without getting detailed documentation from the supplier, I guess you'd have to reverse-engineer the hardware/software protocol!

And that's exaclty what the problem is. Till now I didn't get any useful respond to my question from the manufactorer.
