I have had (knock on wood) nothing but good luck with my RIO unit. Up to now, I have been transfering files via USB. I do have a Realtek RTL8029 (AS) ethernet card installed and cable (RJ45 Crossover) running windows 98SE. I currently have no network installed at all. Now my questions begin...
When I go into the network settings and click on properties (TCP/IP) of the afformentioned card, it is asking for an IP address and a subnet mask, under the gateway tab, it is asking for the gateway address. Basically, I have NO idea what to put in any of these areas. Could somebody walk me thru what I need to set up in emplode (ver 1.03) and in windows. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi heres what I suggest you do
Note when entering the IP address you should enter the dot ('.') between the numbers but its is ignored unless the number is less than 3 digits, in which case WIndows will advance to the next 'text' field on the screen. (you'll see what I mean when you do it).

1. Enter the address of 192.168.1.1 for your 'PC's IP address.

2. Enter 255.255.255.0 as the Network Mask

3. Enter 192.168.1.1 as the Default Gateway.

Click 'Ok' to save the settings, if you get a warning message about "one or more adapters having empty Wins addresses", ignore it (click Ok) and continue.

As this is Windows 98 you will be forced to reboot once you exit the Network settings screen - reboot your system and log back into your Windows 98 box.

Now, start Emplode, like you normally would and connect to your player as normal via USB.

ISelect the Configure Player menu option once connected to your Empeg and under the Ethernet Address fields ensure the 'Use DHCP' button is not set (the next 3 boxes will be grayed out until you click on the option other than 'Use DHCP', then enter into the boxes as follows:

'192.168.1.2' as the Empegs IP address,
enter '255.255.255.0' as the network mask
enter '192.168.1.1' as the Gateway (if it asks).

Then save/ok this information and resync with the player.

Once it has done this you should be able to go to the Command Prompt in Windows [on Accessories menu],and type in
ping 192.168.1.2

this should respond with a message like:

Pinging 192.168.1.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

Rather than:

Pinging 192.168.1.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

If you get the Request Timed Out messages then either your network is not plugged in properly [check on the back of the Empeg, there is a little light marked Link between the USB connector and the Ethernet connector, which is lit up with a Blue light if the Empeg is connected via Ethernet or USB and not lit if neither is connected, so if you unplug the USB cable the light should be on if the Ethernet cable is plugged in].

If this is the case, then check that a
ping 192.168.1.1 gives the correct reponse (as per the first result above), if this fails then your Windows Networking is not working properly.

If all the above is fine, then within Emplode, select the Options Menu and then uncheck the USB option and check the 'Ethernet Broadcast' options, then save the settings and then reconnect to the player - this time it should find your empeg on "IP 192.168.1.2" - slect it/connect to it and away you go.

I suggest you do not uncheck the serial port option as you will need this in the short term at least to upgrade your Empeg software (software upgrades are serial only at the moment).
However, if the player is not connected by other than Ethernet it should work fine for normal uploading purposes.

number6,

Thanks for your post. I appreciate the time that you took. However, as luck would have it, I am unable to get a connection. Here is what the command prompt is saying...

Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

C:\>ping 192.168.1.2

Pinging 192.168.1.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

C:\>

Just to double check, you say that the IP address and the Gateway on the PC should be the same (192.168.1.1)?
The light on the back of my ethernet card and the light on the empeg are on.

I don't know if this matter, but when I double click on "network neighborhood" the only icon that exists is the "entire network" icon. when I double click it, it says "unable to browse the network, the network is not accessable" I did double check the settings you gave me, and all is what you said to input. I do have a question though, in the network configuration tab in windows, there are several components installed. One says TCP/IP Realtek RTL8029 PCI Ethernet NIC and one of the others is just Realtek RTL8029 PCI Ethernet NIC (without the TCP/IP in front). The one that does not have the TCP/IP has a few setting that are available. The ones I have selected are..."enhanced mode (32 bit and 16 bit) NDIC driver, Bindings tab has TCP/IP checked, and the advanced tab has duplex mode with a value of "half deplex" selected. There is an option under this advanced tab to change from duplex mode to "network address" and then input a value. Should any of these be changed?

Also, the only protocols that are installed are TCP/IP. Do any other protocols need to be installed (like IPX/SPX) etc...?

Any more suggestions? Thanks again!

Ok, the problem is due to Windows 9X networking is not enabled UNLESS you log in to your Windows box.

When you restart your Windows 98 box, are you given a 'login' and 'password' box?
If so, then if you click 'Cancel' it will let you in to Windows, but networking will not work.

so, what you do is enter a login name [any valid name will do, and a password - you should remember both of these for next time you reboot your machine].

Once you have entered the login name and password you should find that the ping command will now work - and you won't get Destination host unreachable.

I know it seems odd, but thats the way Windows 95/98/ME was designed - its documented in the help files somewhere

Give this a try and see how you go.

When I reboot windows, NO window with a login or password comes up. How do I get that to come up? Again, I appreciate your help!

Hmm, its been a while since I used Windows 9X without this enabled.

I think you have to install the Window Network Client
as a protocol to your Networking Adapter.

go to Network properties, select your Ethernet card,
then click Install, the pick protocol, then pick Windows Network client (I think), or maybe its Windows Networking, can't recall which it is now].
either once you install this protocol, it will require a reboot, then it should present the login screen once it reboots.

I also suggest you read the online help files in Windows about 'enabling networking' about this point before you do any of this because it will have all the information you need in there and I don't have a Windows 9X box that I can look at to know 100% for sure exactly what you need to do from here - I'm going totally by my memory.

Not logging in, while preventing Windows Networking from working, shouldn't affect basic IP function. Pull up a command window/DOS prompt/whatever and type in ``ipconfig /all''. It should show you (probably amongst other things) your network card and what IP address it has assigned to it. Double-check that it's correct there.

So early in the morning I might give wrong answers but...

The default gateway in this case shouldn't be the PC. There's a IP-address given for gateways actually not exists in the network.
I would suggest you use 192.168.1.254 as the default gateway (for PC and Empeg as well).

Something else:
What does the System Configuration (via control panel) says about the status of your ethernet card? Is it OK or does it have a questionmark or exclamation?

Good luck,

Eize

I used to administer about 200 Windows 98 PCs. I feel fairly confident that, unless Win98SE has changed since the last time I dorked with it, IP works and SMB doesn't when failing to ``log in'', as all of my users that were in that situation could play with their web browsers all day (and some did ), but couldn't access the machine right next to them. But feel free to play with anything that you think might help.

Um, people...

The gateway setting is only used if you've actually got a gateway. (Gateway is a fancy name for an internet router, for those who don't know...)

This guy is plugging straight into his player so the gateway should be blank.

tfabris: re: Gateway IP - yes sure you're technically right, but its harmless to set it to yourself if you only ping the local network and I've seen more problem due to missing gateway Ip than no gateway Ip, hence the idea to put it in.

wfaulk: I will bow to your greater skills in this area but AFAIK Windows 9X does NOT have a ipconfig command, only winipcfg. but its a good idea.

Okay a few tips

the empeg will not turn up in network nieghbourhood as it isn't a win computer it is a linux machine. You can get it to appear but it is a bit of a work up.

Secondly don't bother with the command line prompt ping etc. just plug in the empeg after setting up the network properties as originally stated and see if emplode can find it don't forget you will need to tell emplode to look for it one the IP address you have given it.

Tip fill in your stats on the BBs profile there might be someone round the corner who could give you a hand.

Well, after reinstalling my card (again), mysteriously the windows networking prompt came up when starting windows. I then proceeded to input the following variables into these areas:

PC IP: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway (left blank)

Emgeg MK11:

IP: 192.168.1.2
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: (left blank)

I rebooted windows (98), set emplode to look for a specific broadcast on 192.168.1.2.

Wallaaa!!! It is working.

I can not thank everyone enough for your time in helping me get this set up. Perhaps putting this information up in a faq somewhere would help others. Just a possibility...

Some final thoughts and a quick question...

I did a couple of tests to compare USB with the Ethernet connection. Here is what I found:

The time it took to upload 10 files @62.4megs was 1:57 for my ethernet connection.
The time it took to upload the same files with USB was 2:49.

I was wondering if windows has anything that will allow you to monitor the bandwidth up the upload. Again, I am using 98SE.

Thanks again!

Some transfering figures I found this eve. This is average...

1) 1.8gb on 20GB Neo II Jukebox to WinME on USB was 31 minutes

2) 1.8gb From WinME to 60GB Empeg on USB was 39 minutes.

I use the Neo 20gb'er as a tranfer device since we have a T3 at work and I have a 56k connection at home...
