My friend got an empeg for christmas (this christmas), but actually received a month or two ago. The empeg did function when he initially got it. It came with the IEC brick power supply.

Tonight, he wanted to play with the empeg, but temporaily misplaced the brick. So he used a 5V 1Amp Ac adapter. He claims the LED blinked for a couple seconds and then died. After finding the brick, he plugged in the empeg and it now shows no signs of life. He claims that when plugged in with the brick there is a smell.

I am going to see him on Sunday. What should I look for? I refuse to believe that the empeg is totally dead now. If I can't get it to work, what should I do? Sending it back across the ocean, I think, is something he's not going to go for.

Did the adaptor output 5VAC ? If it output 5VDC it shouldn't hurt anything unless the polarity was reversed mabe.

This is my assumption of what happened.

If I recall correctly, there are some fuses in the player itself that are self-resetting. This would also be accompanied by a smell. But there are other components that will burn out completely and would tend to produce a smell as well. So that doesn't necessarily mean he's home free.

But if he's lucky, he only needs to wait a while, and then plugging in a proper power supply will work. Dunno how long "a while" is, I thought it was only a few minutes.

Last time this happened, the person had plugged in a power supply that output an AC voltage instead of a DC voltage. The result was a similar set of symptoms, and I seem to recall that David had to fix it because some stuff did get fried. Anyone have that thread link handy?

Yes, that was me blowing the smoke out of my Empeg

Guess the polarization was the key for this.
Right after I blew it I opened the player and saw that one circuit had blown. Sent it out to David and got it back. Dunno what magics David did to it, the blown circuit had been replaced / removed.

Transportation / Service was good on the repair.

Now my Empeg works like an angel. Though it's pretty damn cold out here in Finland (tops at -30Celsius). ...and no. I'm not using my Empeg in that cold :/
