This may be a silly question, but I couldn't find an answer: is the current version (11d) of emplode and the player supposed to be able to sync over a LAN connection, or is that something that will be in a future version? Sync over USB works (sort of - lots of 'stage 5' errors). I assigned my Mk II a static IP address, and although I can ping it nicely, emplode can't find it. Is that normal?

On the CD there's a file called 'how to sync over ethernet.txt'. it explains how to setup emplode to use Ethernet.

Could you maybe provide this file on your website in the download software section? Would be good to know as much as I can about the Mk2 before I get it.

It's not really needed; the next version of emplode scans the network and will locate connected empegs automatically - I've seen it working today :)

The current registry hacks are just a stop-gap measure.

Ummm, presumably it also has a configuration option for specifying the IP address? Considering that the IP address of the Emplode machine and IP address of the Empeg may be on completely different subnets (making broadcast discovery useless), or entirely different switches (also rendering broadcasts useless), depending on the network configuration...

After unpacking and setting up my MkII on my ethernet, I dragged a folder with 1500 songs (6GB) into emplode v11d and it synch'ed with *no problem*. Outstanding!

In my case I did the following, but ymmv:
a) connected by USB, set static IP address in Player Configuration
b) changed registry entry per readme file How-to-synchronise-over-ethernet.txt
c) installed IE 5.0 as mentioned in some post on this BBS
d) reconnect by ethernet, then launch emplode

I plan to do a major drop tonight, via ethernet, from my Mac using Virtual PC... will report back on how that goes as well.

Not entirely. It depends on the discovery method, the broadcast type used, and the connections between the subnets. If you are talking about a limited subnet only broadcast, yes.

On the other hand, they could copy the method the HP JetDirect cards broadcast when unconfigured. That was always entertaining, running JetAdmin at a local high school, and picking up hundreds of printers across the massive school network. I was starting to believe I was the only sysadmin there who knew what I was doing. They had a switched port for every school. That was still over 200 computers on a giant uplinked hub setup where I was. The collision light was on solid around lunch time for some reason, and for the network I ran to be able to run decently, I ended up throwing 2 NIC's into the server and making it a router. (It definitely helped with my multimeg roaming profile after that :-)

At the moment it broadcasts to the global broadcast address on all interfaces on your machine. If your routers pass such broadcasts then it will work. If they don't then it won't.
